Maiden Steel  :(
Not the first time things have blown up in my face. Not the worst, either, and at least Atlanta isn't as bad a place to be unemployed in as Connecticut was.

OTOH, I can post on Backstage again and I'll shortly be back ingame pewing ur ships

Quote from: Dropbear on The Forums
Firstly, thanks for show of support guys. We're really glad live events can make a meaningful impact like this, that's really epic to see. (Also, being called a fanwhore was quite heartwarming, after I looked up the meaning.)

So...Headfirst and I are both still around, and we'll continue to support events as we always have. If it means we shift some of the event work back to our "off hours" then so be it. As we've maintained since the beginning, we really love this part of our jobs, and we're happy to do whatever it takes to keep events going.

Expect a little disruption to events over the short-term, and possibly some readjustments to our resources over the long term. It's possible some of the big ideas for events may become less likely, but we'll see, and keep you all updated on any changes.

Anyways, we'll be back on the road before you know it, and pushing for more event support as we always have. Part of the short-term lull will just be us needing some time. We lost some friends in all of this, and some great thinkers. A little patience would be appreciated in the coming days.

Sooooo much ♥,
Dropbear and Headfirst

I thought it was policy to trash any existing characters if you became a CCP employee?

Helmar interviewed:

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/38019/CCPs_Petursson_It_Is_My_Responsibility_To_Avoid_Layoffs.php

Of note:

Quote
"This is a major thing, and it's something which it is my responsibility to avoid," CEO Hilmar Petursson told Gamasutra in a phone interview from the CCP Atlanta offices. His voice was quavering with emotion during this part of the call, in which he pondered his responsibilities to these displaced staff.

(Takeaway: The wording is confusing, but he seems to be adknowleding that this is connected to his "mea culpa" status and unless he's a really good actor, this is rough on him too.)

Quote
As for the affected staff, Petursson told Gamasutra that the company is making efforts to help place them with new industry jobs.

"We're doing a lot of things," he said. "I've personally been contacted by many CEOs in the industry which have offered to help with finding employment for the people who are leaving, and that's a great thing to see. So we are connecting people with our industry friends, we are helping them with their resumes, we are helping them to make contacts, and things like that."

Quote
He also said that plans to add out-of-ship play to EVE via Incarna "will now not be a big priority for us; the biggest priority is EVE Online, the spaceship game."

I thought it was policy to trash any existing characters if you became a CCP employee?

They freeze the account and you're not allowed to associate with your former friends in EVE in obvious ways like forums and the like.  You're allowed to create a new account and fly with that, but can't go anywhere near sov warfare, 0.0 politics, or your old mates in EVE.  If and when you are no longer a CCP employee your account is unfrozen and given back.

This is my understanding anyway.

I was just about to edit my post away, actually, since now I think it's probably none of my business, lol

Not too terrible then, old horror stories about people having to give up everything when they got hired, etc.

Carry on then.

There is actually a duration on it ... after a while (six months?) they unfreeze the main account and you can play it (even as a CCP employee)

But you aren't allowed to be very vocal in player community/forums/rage etc and should be obviously running a player corporation.

(Assuming nothing has changed in the 3 years since I met their internal affairs people) - I think the point is to make a clean break when you start the job and if you keep your nose clean and play nice you do get your original character back for usage - would be a bit of a deal-breaker for many otherwise :)
