I don't really care much about this. When I log into EVE, a converter inside my head activates that automaticly transforms RL terms into IC ones. In the other thread I said I could even understand people using RL musician names. I mean, Ché could say he's into the band FTLhead, but how many people would get the Radiohead reference? Or worse...someone politely points out "Don't you mean Gammahead?"

Yeah, I probably would not name my character Ché Biko if I could do it again, but hey, maybe the famous names are the only ones that still exist in 26,000 years.
In my eyes, the word "grape" is no more or less disturbing than the word "Chardonnay".

I try to balance my thoughts on this .  More immersion breaking then people using a 'brand name' for something

is someone who saks:

"What is a cat?"

MENTALLY every single one of us can cover for an accidental nick in the 4th wall.  But when everyone starts pointing and screaming at it, it is embarrassing for the person who did it and completely disruptive to the flow of roleplay.

That's why I ask here and not ICly like a douche.

But it DOES happen IC on the summit, nearly daily.

I am not calling you a douche.  I am stating opinion.

Where the hell did that even come from, anyway?

I didn't mean it to be aggressive or target anyone. I just think that calling people out on it ICly, which means settling OOC disputes through IC means, is quite poor form and rather "coward"/cheap.

Always better and more honest to open private convos OOCly and/or talk OOCly here or elsewhere...

I'm glad Lyn brought this up honestly, its the sort of thing that yeah I definitely think is important and it does really effect RP depending on how its decided.

I tend to fall on the side of the people who are okay with fudging the words, though it can get silly when people constantly mention things like pizza, though I know I do that too sometimes.

I think the best real solution would be if the canon was fleshed out enough that we just had all of the EVE terms. What is the IC name for Occam's Razor? If we knew it and could just use that, then there'd be no issue in the first place.

I just don't think that's practical at all. There's just too many terms and phrases, and on top of that you'd need people to remember the alternate phrase, or consult the guide over and over again.

It doesn't sound fun to me, and it's a horrendous barrier for new players.

It is a problem, though. The only solution I see is to try and avoid egregious pop culture references and wear the rest as a "translation convention".

Some real world terms are so ingrained in EVE RP the community couldnt exist without them.

I mean, half of IGS would disappear if you took the term "Straw man fallacy" out of our vernacular.

It's a game. I know people like immersion but...it's a game. Not everything needs to be so nailed down. Also, it'd be a stupid barrier or entry for new RP'ers. Napanii was thought to be a barrier, but it's only used sparsely and doesn't directly prevent new RP'ers from engaging others. But to flesh out a bunch of RL terms and make those the only recognized ones? That's just a 'fuck you, pleb' right to the face of newbies.

No thank you.

What else would you call pizza?

Or is it just that you see things like pizza and hotdogs as being very modern?

For me, the worst unconscious references are for the Gallente, where they are just synonymous with the US for the purposes of cultural comparisons. An example is, say, describing all Gallente secondary schools as exactly like US high schools, and additionally using North American terminology in casual and sometimes derogatory world building that confuses European players.

I can also understand the justification by "translation". It's legitimate to say that what we read Champagne or Occam here will sound in a foreign language spoken in New Eden. It's just more disturbing to read about something very specific starting with a capital letter than just metres or kilograms or whatever.

Speaking of standard units, if people could please add what amount of cm / metres equals to their feet and inches and gallons and other non international units they use in their bios and all, it would be awesome at times, because it's gibberish for people that do not speak them.

We are told to speak english by convention because it's the international language, so would be cool if people did the same for international units...

"What is a cat?"
This is kind of relevant to what we're doing. All kinds of weird stuff is known about New Eden's flora and fauna but next to nothing when it comes to the important things like crops, domestic animals and invasive species. Because most habitable planets in the cluster are terraformed, it's not at all clear that everything except the curiosities work exactly as in the real world. Maybe some extrapolation could be done based on the known facts about the societies, cultures and religions - how these structures evolve tends to depend on the environment.

Anyhow, in my view the principle of least surprise would say here that it's safer to assume there exist cats and other kinds of dogs than the Slaver hound, than that they've all somehow gone extinct in the whole cluster, or that humans no longer have interest in pets.

I think I've included international units in my bios, because that's what the game uses.
