'Ancient Races' Arc
« on: 20 Feb 2013, 13:12 »

Figured we should start one on this subject.   This thread should cover sleepers, jove, and all the others.

I for one am quite happy that these things have taken a backside.  I find the EVE PF rich and wide-ranging enough.

Any time we read about ancient AI virtual reality ghost sleepers manipulating all of us I have difficulty not eye rolling into unconsciousness.

I wouldn't mind the rare Jove popping back in someday but I'm super happy we haven't heard or seen any of the ancients lately.

The ancients races (unlike the broker..) have at least their own flavor and originality. They also bring on the table a lot of post human concerns and interesting things. It also gives more depth to the timeline by adding a whole other dimension behind the current civilization, putting the emphasis on the fact that the current inhabitants of New Eden are survivors on another era living on its past long forgotten ruins. For RP focused on archaeology, it's a golden mine. Everything around Anoikis and what Apocrypha brought has a certain atmosphere of intriguing mystery wrapped around and I personnaly like it.

However, I am less fan of alien overmind manipulating everyone...

Well, from what I can gather, I think the Yan Jung seriously have something to do with this....and I hope to gods they do. I want to know what the hell happened during the dark times. Were avetat and avenath (sp) an ancient human race or legit aliens? What happened to make the ancients disappear? What's on the other side of the Eve Gate? Are the Terrans alive? Was it closed on purpose?? DOES ADAM STILL EXIST?! I MUST KNOW!!!

But to bring all these answers forth would make it all so very mundane.

True.

That is why it should stay plausible theories/wild speculations.

To add; doing A'J and digging into the backstory og EVE was the best gameplay I have ever experienced. I am probably not a very good social RPer as I care little for character development, but I do like exploring and being immersed into a sci-fi world.

Good points, and I should clarify I don't mind the archeology / digging up the past aspects, but I loathe the 'overmind' plot.

I understand there should be some mystery behind it, but that shouldn't be a reason to simply keep it a mystery forever. For crying out loud it's been ten years. TEN YEARS. We've had one "reveal," the Sleepers. And we barely (ICly) know anything about them. Not a peep. Not to even mention the Yan Jung or any of the other races.

Is it going to take another ten years for the ancients to show up again in SOME kind of story?

I am mitigated on this. I would really like to see a bit more explained on what were actually all of these races (except the sleepers that we now know what they are thanks to TO), instead of just things like "The Tlalocan were masters of blablabla and the Takhmal were masters of yadayada". You know, just to make the difference between them a little more easily and flesh out the few bits that we now have discovered about them through archaeology.

However I wouldnt really like to see all the big mysteries being explained. It would spoil all the atmosphere. I for one, am like Gorda Hoje with that, I crave to know the Truth but I fear what it would mean.

Without even counting that finding an awesome explanation is a dream. It would most likely deflate like wet fireworks. More precisely, we would all soon find reasons to say "well, if that isn't disappointing...".

There is an interesting twist to this "digging into the past" storyline wise. I mean, whoever wrote the earliest chronicles and the PF bits contained in the COSMOS missions/complexes might not all be working for CCP anymore and it is very likely that these bits of PF has been "forgotten" by CCP as well as the playerbase at large. As such, there are actually interesting bits you can dig out and show to the world.

As example, I never managed to get around to uncover the PF bits contained the zero sec COSMOS missions.

I obviously quite love the exploration discovery side of things, and I'd love to CCP add more content to forward the storyline in regards to what players know. It'd be really awesome to suddenly find some new peace of information in a sleeper site no one has ever seen before, or a wormhole to somewhere no one has ever been.

I think there will always be some deeper mystery to explore so long as CCP play their cards right. I don't really worry about running out of things to do :D

We need more Jove.  We need more PF on these issues, at least the kind that our characters would know.

Sak would be a Jove fangirl if she had more to work off of.

Well now that I'm thinking about it, anyone know why information on the Statics and Modifiers just sort of ... disappeared? I could have sworn there was an official page about them once. With pictures!

CCP has been retconning stuff left right and centre lately. Other then the information revealed in Templar One, I'm not sure how much of the really old stuff we can expect to rely on.

Jovian info in general got sent to a quiet corner, and a lot of 'hidden' Jovian characters in the game were redesigned out of their Jovian race. This happened a year or so ago. Not sure whats up with that, probably cleaning relics and stream lining them.

I'd like for CCP to step out of their shell of 'enabling players through skill mechanics' in this area.  By that, I mean if we get a 'Yang Jung Data Fragment' in an EVA mission (real hopeful thinking here), it is actually part of a large set of such data fragments, and they require some really low level (heuristic) decryption like a real puzzle.

Basically recover in game lore item, try to obtain copies (or annecdotal accounts) of others and build up a picture of part of their history, as dictated by CCP, over the course of a few months (easily modified by spawn rates for lore items).  When the players decode that puzzle, stop spawning that series of items and insert a new puzzle.

I'd be much more excited about discovering lore, than reading it on the fiction portal.  Hell, possession of a good number of data fragments would indicate a good investment (paying or scamming) or effort (working exploration COSMOS?  some new site that makes farming ludicrously hard?) and may even mean 'Breaking News' that adds to YOUR arc, after all, you found and helped decrypt words from the ancients.

The beauty of this is that the lore itself need not impact the present, beyond the historical importance.  After all, finding out the name of the mummified corpse in a Pyramid doesn't send shock waves around the world, BUT it is noteworthy and media enabled civilians pay attention to that kind of thing.  Inserting UNIQUE (it must be unique or exceptionally rare imo) back story into exploration content opens up a brave new world for role players, and allows CCP to pace their 'peripherally related' prime fiction based on player interest.  Those interested in uncovering ancient lore will look for it, and the sum of their efforts will determine how fast a lore-thread expires as all components are found and decrypted.

More power to us.  I know CCP wants to tell it's story and agree that is the way it needs to be, but I want to be at the forefront of uncovering what was, collaborating with people who possess specialist OOG skills and interests to bind our community closer and have REAL scholarly/investigative content that engages me beyond writing up a hand waved paper or activating a code breaker module.
