But Master of Puppets is one of the greatest albums of all time.  I've had this shit on repeat in winamp for the last 3 days.  I wish it were 1986 again (even though I was only like 5 then).

Metallica should kick that Rob Trujillo douche, beg Jason to come back and get back to their regularly scheduled musical pwnage.

After you mentioned it I had to remedy the lack of a complete Master of Puppets album. Muuch better now.  :)

You know, I'm half deaf IRLs, and it's affected my ability to be interested in metal. And in a lot of other kinds of music that are about having a loud, jarring sound first and clever lyrics second.

It's kind of set me apart from other folks, I guess.

Well, not all metal bands are Manowar, m'kay :D However, if you do ever check out metal you'll find that there are a good deal of bands with quite the clever and meaningful lyrics like Dream Theater, Ayreon, Pain of Salvation, Ihsahn, W.A.S.P. (especially The Crimson Idol album and latter era) and they're not so much about the loud jarring noise as about the melody, music, and lyrical content.

On the OP, yas Master of Puppets rules. A magnificent album in metal history. Very socio-politically critical lyrics which, despite the time frame they were written in by angry young men, still apply today. And is epicly awesome to rock out to.

Dream Theater

There was no time for pain
No energy for anger
The sightlessness of hatred slips away...

Yeah, Dream Theater had two or three albums full of pure awesome (Images and Words, Awake and A Change of Seasons).  GREAT stuff, metal meets progressive rock along the lines of Rush.  Beautiful, melodic, heavy in the right places and airy in others... <3 DT

While I do love MoP as the best Metallica of all time, you can't blame Trujillo.
Cliff Burton was the bass player in MoP, Jason Newstead is the proud keeper of the 'Load' era of Metallica. A lot of what I've seen (like footage of behind-the-scenes work on Death Magnetic) indicates that Trujillo is a big part of Metallica's current return to more complicated symphonic songs, ala Master of Puppets, and since Newstead's main reason for leaving Metallica was his decreasing impact on the band's direction musically, I doubt he was a great strength of the band's better aspects.

That's a very fair point.  I think it may also reflect a change in James and Lars' attitudes, though - from watching that "Some Kind of Monster" documentary, Lars seemed pretty regretful about Jason's leaving at least (dunno about James since he was at Rehab and stuff and it's been a while since I saw it).  Point I'm trying to get at is I think that it might've also been a 'lesson learned' kind of thing where this time around they want to be more open about input to the songwriting and not leaving Rob out the way they did Jason.  On the other hand, Rob may just have a more forceful "I will not be denied" kind of personality, too.

I DO like the stuff on Death Magnetic musically... James has just kinda lost his touch lyrically imo, and wtf Unforgiven III?  Was that really necessary?   :bash:

Metallica died musically pretty much after the black album, everythign else before that is golden I still have often in my playlist. Sure Load and reload have a few good songs... But when the song that is most remembered from that era is 'Whiskey In The Jar'-cover.. Something gives. And the new shit.. St. Anger and that tripe makes me facepalm.

I never had any opinion about Metallica personalities before I saw 'Some kind of a monster', after that I've pretty much thought of the dudes as bunch of horrible flangerabbits and waved strongly the Mustaine flag in that eternal 'Megadeth or Metallica' dispute.

Thankfully we still have Mustaine with Megadeth who still writes kick ass metal songs with pretty good lyrical content.

But this is just my 0.02isk on the matter :3

You know, I haven't actually heard any of Megadeth's recent shit.  This is something I should fix asap

I highly recommend it especially the album "System Has Failed" and "Endgame" was rock solid as well.

I actually like their new-ish album Death Magnetic. Definitely improves over St. Anger, and "Suicide and Redemption" is one of their best tracks in years and years.

Has there ever been a greater fall than from the black album to whatever the hell Metallic wrote afterwards? Its just jarring.

Yeah, guy, it doesn't work that way at all. Basically anything that fits into the 'metal' category destroys my ability to comprehend spoken words, let alone lyrics. I can tell there's noise and maybe a human voice in there somewhere, but if it's loud enough and constant enough, it takes fifty playthroughs for me to find out what's goin' on.

And the last group I did that for was Nirvana, kthx.
