Latest trailer showed some basic gameplay (units moving, no combat yet), has definite homeworld vibe, but I came close to giving up on it when they asked for $100 for people to join the beta. They had, iirc, 10,000 open slots for that... 400? of which have been filled. Because asking for a hundred fucking dollars when you don't even have gameplay out yet is freaking derp.

I'll be watching this from a good, safe distance. Hopefully it will live up to expectaction.

I found the terrain following of the flying units to be a bit derpy looking. I'm wondering how defending a wreck is going to be different from defending resource asteroid fields, too - but as you said, let's give it some time and space to develop.

And not pay $100 to get into the Beta.

Star Citizen, when they first asked for money, had:
- tiered funding starting at under $20, with interesting rewards for more money
- LOTS of video of progress already made, ships flying around, etc
- LOTS of info about what the game was actually going to be
- Chris Roberts

Shipbreakers, when they first asked for money, had:
- Artwork
- A small portion of the original Homeworld team (which IIRC doesn't include the writer)

In short, Star Citizen did everything right. They pretty much set the new standard for crowdfunding games. Shipbreakers asking for so much money just to sell you some fluff, and so much more money just to get into the beta, looks like they just threw something together to try and raise some quick cash, rather than putting in the time and effort for a proper crowdfunding campaign. Thankfully, it has failed. I don't want developers thinking that gamers are ready to shell out $100 to be beta testers.

I certainly hope that they live up to the hype generated by merely mentioning Homeworld. But what they have now leaves me asking "Where's the beef?"

Blackbird Interactive has won the rights to use the Homeworld name. Most folk now seem to be calling this "Homeworld - Shipbreakers" #

UPDATE

Hardware: Shipbreakers has been renamed to "Homeworld: Shipbreakers".

Yes, that means that by some stroke of luck, they have acquired the right to use the Homeworld IP. It is now officially being touted as a prequel to the events of Homeworld 1, and rumor suggests that the gameplay will happen either on Kharak itself or elsewhere in the universe.

Furthermore, it will now be a stand-alone downloadable title and will no longer be F2P.  They also dropped the Facebook requirement. Still not confirmed to have a single player mode yet, but we're getting much closer to that. There is hope for it yet.

It's worth noting that all pre-purchases have been totally refunded to buyers, as they now have the financial backing of a major publisher and are totally changing their design goals because of it. They are reworking a lot of things and will be releasing a revised list of features and intentions later on. I don't think it's out of line to expect a proper prequel with a real story and campaign set in the Homeworld Universe.

The Homeworld franchise actually lessens my interest in this, but I might be alone with that. It's not that I hate Homeworld or anything, but novelty hello? That said, I'm still interested so I guess no one cares.

Anyone got any news on this? At first and second glance this seems to be stone-cold, site and materials still up, but no news past 2013, no new dev blogs, no new tech demos, not even a "we're sorry to disappoint but we're bankrupt" closure notice.

Any leads?
