She was vulnerable in mixed company approximately one time, after Aldy murdered someone close to her. I believe Morwen and Katrina were there.  She still regrets such weakness and did several months of daily ritual atonement to correct the problem.

Synthia was there, and gave Silas a hug!

I think I also commented on the wallpaper, or carpet, or something similarly inappropriate for the situation.

Ava is emotional, passionate, and frequently very moody.

Easy peasy.

I'm pretty sure that it was Morwen, Reppy, Koronakesh (much to the chagrin of the first two) and maybe someone else, but Katrina was not present for that to my knowledge.

Safai was prettymuch attached to Koro with invisible string, and was there.

Re: the topic, I haven't really thought about it but I think Safai's masks are very subtle if they exist at all. She is staunch, dutiful and unwavering in faith when in public and in private or with a small group. This is rooted in her belief that her deity watches her every action and thought, and there is no absolutely no wiggle room to forget her God-given mission for even a second. Her alone-time is typically spent quietly reciting prayers and hymns, whether she be performing tasks or directly engaging in worship.

But there's also something to be said about those incredibly suave individuals who have been able to get Safai to calm the heck down for a while to simply chat about beverages or whatever, namely Silas Vitalia and Leopold Caine. There are others with this potential, too.

(It also might be worth noting that although Koronakesh and Safai are closely tied, they aren't exactly "friends." Their relationship is cold and strictly platonic, based on mutual faith and business.)

Ché will sometimes use smoke and mirrors to avoid giving people sensitive information, but is pretty much honest in all other situations.
At times though, he will not volunteer to show how much he actually cares about some things and people or what his mental state is. And like I said in the "RP bothers" thread, he sometimes tries to avoid drowning friends in tales of his drama.

Morwen Lagann > the only thing more dangerous is the reena's clutch slipping, causing her internal monologue to fail

That's it, pretty much.

Silas has yet to find any capsuleers that interest her enough to truly open up with. Someone will come along eventually.

She was vulnerable in mixed company approximately one time, after Aldy murdered someone close to her. I believe Morwen and Katrina were there.  She still regrets such weakness and did several months of daily ritual atonement to correct the problem.

She opened up to Inhonores once in a private conversation as well, a rather brutal story from her childhood.  I believe Inhonores was freaked the fuck out and bailed.   :ugh:

Pity we never got to RP more. I think good times would have been had.

Pretty much all of my characters wore masks of some sort, which was part of the problem (see other thread). Vicky herself wore several - none of them weren't her, but none of them were completely her. It was simply a question of which side you got to see at a time.

Orthic certainly wore a mask, coming off as detached, cold, etc. He also wore a sort of literal mask - trauma left by past crimes left his face (courtesy of some handwavium) only capable of emotional expression on one side. The other side still worked for things like eating and speaking, but didn't smile or frown. It was a fun little character quirk.

Public Mask: Aloof, trollish, dismissive, irritable. Generally suffering the existence of others thanks to the dreadful effort it would take to get rid of them. Occasionally engages in arguments and lectures on things nobody really cares about, which she blames on the lack of intellectual capacity of those listening and/or complaining. Slightly less of all the above in places designed for R&R, such as bars or lounges.

Professional Mask: No-nonsense, busy, still dismissive, lacking in much social talent. She doesn't talk much when she's on the job, preferring instead to stay on the job. She's wholly unfun to be around, and doesn't even acknowledge the annoyances or interesting characteristics of others around her. She pretty much acts like you're not there, until she has something to say to you.

Private Mask: Attentive, relaxed, affectionate, insecure, and wildly paranoid. She's a huge snugglebug and generally wants little more than to curl up in the arms of her significant other, or enjoy a warm meal, or just sprawl out on the couch and relax for a while. On the downside, time to waste means time to worry. She has a remarkable talent for imagining plots and schemes against her from any angle, and is prone to blaming even close friends for such imagined conspiracies.

This was an enjoyable thread to read.  Its unfortunate there isn’t an IC medium where such a relatively small population, (capsuleers) can mix..  As to masks.  James is contemptible, arrogant, and cruel.  He is also loyal, caring and selfless.  I hope that those who have taken the time to know him ICly would agree.

Uraniae wears a Uraniae mask.  That is to say, she is usually quiet and contemplative, to the point of sometimes coming across as dismissive to some people or in certain situations where she just doesn't have anything to add to the conversation.  She tries very much to be calm and float through the various crowds and groups without getting linked to any one in particular.

I'm at the point where I can honestly say I don't know if Uraniae's mask has become her true face or not.  I had originally intended for her to ruthless and cruel when times call for it but otherwise civil and calm outwardly.  Now, I just can't see her ever really taking any sort of hostile action at all.  She's become too nice, and honestly too boring...

Grid (for the most part) treats the words exchanged in The Summit as not much more than a good Holoseries for it's drama content. Very flippant, very sarcastic, and that's if he even says anything. Meeting his Battleship in space (because meeting him in person is rare due to him spending the majority of his time in his pod) is a different story, and that all depends on what you're doing at the time.

Halete is multi-faceted. She's too easily influenced by people she comes into contact with so she takes on some characteristics from circle to circle. She has many faces and is often the victim of her own tangled webs (Halete has a large degree of cognitive dissonance, any character who has taken the time to sit down with her and talk through her political and spiritual stances has quickly learned how deeply flawed and hypocritical she is). She's difficult for me to play to her fullest, not least of all in recent months as she succumbed to a temporary insanity (she's getting better now, I hope). I'm not even sure Halete conciously wears marks insomuch as it would be impossible to observe 'Halete' at one time.

I was talking about Halete's spiritualism a while ago which has largely developed through RP and seeing different religions in-character, adapting ideas to her own beliefs, etc. and I mentioned how what I've come up with roughly combines Sani Sabik elements with more compassionate animism. Pushed to her best, following her faith, Halete could age into a staunch guardian with a deep sense of spirituality and strict moral code. Pushed to her worst, following her faith, Halete could evolve into a vengeful and power-hungry zealot bent on removing the elements of the Cluster she found unfavorable by force.

Quinzel is nowhere near as nuanced. She presents herself as a brief woman, with a cold exterior and often a brutal tongue. She tries to play by the numbers most of the time.

Inside, she deeply regrets that she has no real social skills (her ideas of making friends so far have ranged from blackmail and extortion to other types of manipulation) and wishes she could just 'switch off' from time to time. Her instincts are cringing from how she's living, but being harsh and serious is all she knows.

Mask: Aloof immortal abomination of a holder for a miniscule capsuleer house.

the man breaks out every now and then, but I suspect few people even notice.

Samira has a strong split between her public and private sides. She is very dishonest about who she really is. In public she's very prim and proper, or at least tries to be. She stays restrained and tries to avoid any displays of strong emotion, either positive or negative, and typically seeks to avoid resorting to insults even against those she dislikes. Occasionally she makes a poor comment here and there, but she tries not to. Basically, Samira's been trained during her life as a slave to be completely subservient. She believes she's actually offending people if she presents her "real self", because she expects that no one cares about her and her issues and would dismiss her for opening up. Therefore, in public, she continues to present herself as a servant to endear herself to others and to protect her from their wrath.

Beneath the mask is an entirely different story, though. She's a complete wreck under it. She bottles up all of her emotions and feelings in public, and so is desperate for any kind of release. Hence the drugs, pornography, massive material collection (making up for never owning anything), and plushies (physical connection is something she desires a lot because her social restraint means she has almost no one to be close to. Thus cuddling with stuffed animals as a replacement). Very, very few people see her beneath the mask, since she keeps it on even in private situations unless she is very familiar with the person she's with. I think only Aldrith and Pieter have interacted with her "real self", and even then it's been mostly accidental and only came out when they pressured her. Seriphyn also managed to bother her enough for her to slap him.

Samira is written to simultaneously be someone both slavery supporters and slavery detractors can point to and say is a perfect example of why their argument is right. In public, she's perfectly conditioned, very polite, religious, and selfless. In private, she's been pretty messed up by the experience.
