Also, I always figured that audio communication is a bit odd considering that my character is in a pod most of the time. Unless he has a voice-synth package installed into his implants, he shouldn't be communicating in audio at all. Hence, text > .

I type very fast, and do make spelling mistakes sometimes, so yeah, I get rather irritated when people telling me I'm intentionally making spelling mistakes to start drama or some other such silliness, or nitpick a spelling mistake in character. If someone is making a mistake consistently, I might poke them in an OOC channel to let them know what the proper spelling is though.

Having recently gone back through some of the logs I've seen some of the horrible mistakes I have committed in terms of spelling and grammar; some of these were done while suffering an eye-infection so the inability to clearly see what I was writing or reading contributed to those; others thought, well, I tend to try to type fast and get a response in and know that this causes some pretty bad mistakes to happen. Some I do catch and others not so much.

At the end of the day, I typically don't pay too much attention to spelling and grammar during RP in EVE. The grammar doesn't bother me as that is more a writing convention; the typical verbal conversation between two people rarely adheres to rules of grammar.  And well, we don't see the letters of the words we speak.  On the other hand, if I have to spend five minutes trying to decipher what was written and the point trying to be made, that becomes problematic.

As a rule of thumb, I don't call out spelling or grammatical mistakes made in IC interactions; I might call attention to a mistake like referring to another individual by the wrong gender or other 'slips of the tongue'.  I've had some interesting interactions by actually misinterpreting a statement.

Interesting, as I don't imagine people in pods seeing much text at all.   We 'think' things and the ship responds, we are jacked-in Ghost in the Shell Style.

If I had to imagine the closest approximation to our chat channels, I would imagine it pretty much just like Ghost in the Shell when they are talking with their thoughts only, with perhaps a visual indication in their field of view.

I explain that away as thought-text transcription package implanted into the Broca's area, so instead of speech, you see 'text > blah blah blah' showing up in the corner of your Neocom.

Then again, I probably think he should get the voice-synth package, or else how is he to communicate with his fleet efficiently? I would however have El use that only when the situation really demands it to save CPU resources (he did sorta cobble things up together most of the time).

I'd be inclined to agree. I always found the recent-ish trend of 'text>' jarring and kinda grating but who cares why am I even posting here when I find myself blissfully divested of the game. <_<

I instantly thought of Shadowrun riggers, personally.  Jacked in and sensing things through your body that you kind of understand as information, but it's all just brain information.  It does make sense that if they're connected to your brain, that text would be a little outmoded in the YC years.  I always just assume people are speaking audibly, if not essentially telepathically, when in the pod.  I think a few people actually put in text> when their character is using it, for whatever reason.

I suppose it would be a lot easier to send if you are in a wormhole and not able to get out or running on low power, maybe?  That would be a good time for text?

Anyway, 'visual indication in their field of view' is what I'm working with here. If I am roleplaying in a spaceship, usually, I try not to segregate gameplay from roleplay all that much. It irks me that when I see the chat log on the corner of the neocom, I'm seeing text, but everyone acts like they are speaking in audio. I kept seeing text on the bottom of my screen, instead of hearing the chaos that is The Summit. So, I figured, if all I can do is read text, why not I act like my implants translate thoughts into text? Besides, being in the bad part of New Eden, I couldn't well afford to have voices in my head all the time unless it's the voice of the FC, so I needed a communication system I could outright ignore on demand.

And 'text >' is born.

The last time Makkal used 'text' was because my ship was in structure. Previously, I've used it to represent her not being on her ship at all; she was basically txting while making a sandcastle.
