Regarding Mod Edits
« on: 22 Apr 2010, 20:39 »

Don't edit them.

If people think it's okay to go back and undo any moderator's edit that they happen to have access to (by editing their own post that was moderated but left unlocked), then the value of having mods at all is greatly diminished.

In tonight's example (the pictures thread), one member posted a picture of another member.  In accordance with Rule 7 (Respect privacy), this was cut out and an admin comment posted to the thread.  Shortly thereafter, the member whose picture was posted confirmed that the original poster had their consent.  That's fine.  The appropriate next step would have been for the original poster to repost the content in a new post in the thread or for the member in question to post the content themself.

Not for the original poster to remove the moderator's edit, throwing several subsequent posts into a confusing lack of context.

Also, while it's technically off-topic to this thread it's worth including: as Ciarente pointed out, any time something touching upon Rule 7 is posted, it's desirable to act on it immediately because if there was no such consent, the longer the content remains public, the more people see it and the more harm is done by it.

That's all well and good, but I explicitly told Seri he could repost it in the OP if he wanted, as it was in it's particular place for a specific reason. I can see why you wouldn't want anyone re-editing posts, and agree with that generally. But as it's more of the spirit or the rules, it was cleared by the person in question (me) so why is it an issue? Should I just send a PM ahead of time to every mod to make sure they don't waste their time with an unwanted moderator action?

A note, this could easily have been cleared by sending me a PM, checking in-game, or the IRC channel, hell even email and I'd have noticed quickly enough. It would have avoided a lot of unnecessary moderation.

Edit: So many wasted posts in there, it could use some cleaning up so we don't have two pages of (mostly now) crap admin comments and no content. Ok, cleared up, thanks. Now please let Seri just re-add the damn content to the OP, I don't feel like having to figure out a new context to my own reply as well (not hostile, just yeah, :effort:)

Rules are rules, like Misan said, but the only rule that was broken was regarding a mod edit about a rule that was never broken in the first place...

I think it is embarassing for the forum and for the mods to leave the thread like that however. Can we not tear off those posts and chuck 'em elsewhere? and apparently it's been done, hooray.

Can you give a guy a couple minutes to split out the posts? :p

But yeah.  As per the OP...

We don't know if Rule 7 is or isn't broken until someone complains that it was broken.  We'd rather not wait for that complaint and allow harm to be done.  I think it would be a lot more embarassing for someone to have their <insert article of personal information here> stand for 1 hour, 2, 24, 10 minutes without their consent.

And there really isn't any acceptable reason for cutting out a mod's edit.

My perspective on this is informed by having been stalked, IRL, by someone who used information that had been innocently posted to a game forum by a careless but not ill-intentioned RL acquaintance.

If someone posted information about me on these forums, I would want the mods to act before a single person saw it, not even five minutes later after they'd checked with me via PM or IRC or MSN or whatever.

Unnecessary moderation is an annoyance, but in my opinion, when the harm you are trying to prevent is a lot more than an annoyance, better mod a post than not.

In regards to rule 7, does this apply to group shots of, say, an EVE meet?

With a big group photo, context and common sense would prevail... "group pic at a pub, park, sports event, etc., okay to post"

"Group pic of people in compromising and typically private setting (threesome or something), not okay to post"

That was directed more towards the re-edit than the original intention. I agree with clearing the original post of the image since you didn't know it had the consent of the owner (though it did in practice).

Just that assuming Seri actually did the re-edit without some authorization from myself and treating it as requiring a mod action could have easily been confirmed. As I had posted minutes before and was still online. Perhaps not my call to tell someone to repost snipped content, but as it was my information that seemed valid and within my own purview.

Just burning time I should be focusing somewhere else right now.

If there are shots of Seri in a threesome, I totally don't want to see them.

Ever.

I think that stuff is covered in the no pornographic or >PG-13 content rule. So we're quite safe.  :P

I think there that pictures from eve meets tend to have implicit consent for distribution unless told otherwise. Even the EVE forums allow them.

Wait, so, do you mind people editing a modded post if they mod it outside the  tags?

Because I have no problem leaving mod tags intact, but I kind of have a problem if I edit something for spelling or clairty, especially something textwally, and nuke a mod tag that's been added in the meantime, or something, and unintentionally get a warning.
