News:

That the Intaki Liberation Front's "rampant griffin" corp logo was adopted after the pro-Federation corp The Durandal Organization created a logo using motifs similar to the ILF's original logo?

I love the guy dual-wielding his bolters: you can SEE the age-difference in the models for those guns.

Meh!

The last time I played warty forty I was fielding squats. Then most of the people I was playing against drifted off and the various hacks to the background annoyed me. I was especially irked by the emperor changing from just another very powerful psyker to maybe actually being the god the Imperials think he is. And don't even get me started on the whole concept of Primarchs. I think I preferred the idea of Leman Russ just being a very good commander.

But if you folks like it then good luck to you. The only contact I tend to have with the universe these days is Dan Abnett's fiction & playing in a Dark Heresy campaign.

I have Dark Angels, but they're not painted.

I suck at painting anyway. ._.

So I heard Games Workshop is attempting to treat "Space Marine" as its trademarked phrase.

Presumably they will next sue Warner Brothers for using Orc/Ork in The Hobbit films.  :bash:

I like the implications of Gallentians being punched in the face by walking up to a Minmatar as they so freely use another person's culture as a fad.

Warhammer fantasy and 40K = Ork(s)
Tolkien's middle Earth universe = Orc(s).

GW can't sue WB for shit. GW is about the only group to call their Orks with a K. Everyone else Use C. If anything, whoever owns the Middle-EArth rights may wish to sue Blizzard for their Orcs.

... IF we are really going to be this petty about it. But ofc we will.

WFB uses the traditional spelling.

As far as Tolkien's usage.

Quote from: JRR Tolkien
Orc I derived from Anglo-Saxon, a word meaning demon, usually supposed to be derived from the Latin Orcus – hell. But I doubt this, though the matter is too involved to set out here

In addition, my understanding is that GW & Blizzard addressed their overlap probably a decade+ ago at this point.

I am not sure if it is entirely related, but there has been a recent change in leadership at Games Workshop.

Trademarking "Space Marine" seems perfectly valid from my perspective (though I may be biased as a share holder).

I wouldn't put it on par with words like Orc or Goblin at all, because they're well established in fiction in general. Ork (with a k) however I'm not so sure about. I believe that is a GW invention to distinguish between their two universes (WH and WH40K).

The recent sweeping changes to the entire paint range were done so for similar reasons. While there were technical improvement to the product itself, GW were finding a growing number of other companies immitating their naming convention for paints ("Chaos Black" was "Black Chaos" elsewhere) and so generic words were dropped in favour of characters and placenames from their own prime fiction - "Ultra Marine Blue" became "Macragge Blue", for example.

There were also changes in the producer of said paints from my understanding.
