I was looking through old bookmarks on an older computer and came across a link to the ISS's web page and it occured to me that a lot of new players probably never heard about one of the most awesome things to ever happen in Eve.

Behold and Enjoy!

I remember when my corp first started in EvE.  We looked at investing in ISS.  I'm glad we didn't lol.

I invested a little in two of their outposts. I don't recall, but I suspect I got a reasonable return on that. It was a huge amount of fun, though. :)

The name rings a bell. Was this another flash-in-the-pan idea? :s

No, they were around for a decent amount of time. They built several outposts in different regions. Eventually they lost them, but IIRC they kept them for over a year.

They also maintained a 'navy' to defend said outposts, which people could enlist in to join, which trampled over its 'neutrality' when it intervened to assist Ushra'khan defend their outpost against a coalition of pirates trying to capture 9UY to create...what was it called...I can't remember, some Tortuga or something.  They then solicited the help of MC, who brought the heavy duty. This was in late 2006, when bringing out 20 dreads could have been seen as what bringing out 20 titans would seem like today.

Here's a link to the video 'got fighters?'

Probably one of the very early uses of fighters in this way on this scale, well worth the watch.

I always liked ISS and when we (the MC) rolled out to save their asses in that campaign, I really felt like I was taking part in a game of epic space civilizations. It felt like we were firmly on moral high ground too (though of course someone somewhere will disagree). We got partly paid in shares, so I was a shareowner until the end (the shares were actually quite profitable while they lasted). That kind of thing I miss dearly. People a lot of thought and effort into it.

The ISS is one the few things that I have ever invested ISK in. I got my dividend each month and even managed to get all the money back for my shares in end.

Shame it did not last, but eh, Coalition of Free Stars anyone?

A player-run equivalent of an NPC empire may have been one of ccp's original intentions with nullsec. Shame that places like Providence still don't kick around.

My first corp, on my first character was a member back in the day. We were part of the Borealis launch group. I bought into the whole PC/NPC space thing. Sure it was an awesome idea, I am sure I made alot of people alot of money, but in the end the backroom deals and selling out of entire portions of space is what brought ISS down.

I am sure they planned it that way, but they cornholed alot of people with their supposed ideals.

I still to this day hope an entity arises that can pull off the original vision, but I am not holding my breath,
