I think really most things fail eventually, though. (This being Eve, it's usually something internal at the very end, too. Bad decisions or active betrayal.)

When I first saw the ISS concept, I thought it didn't have a chance in hell of getting off the ground. It did, though, and it ran for quite a while.

This. The corp I was in at the time signed up anyway. :S

Very early on, there were no real plans to provide any kind of security at all. Member corps were effectively on their own, and the few people willing to fight were very frustrated. I was glad to get out, personally. I was as surprised as anyone that they achieved as much as they did.
