Author Topic: Do capsuleer alliances hurt nullsec world-building and RP?  (Read 6852 times)

Take a look at what Ze'ev labelled...

Each section highlights in the race selector, including the nullsec regions...to me, that says that those factions have or had influence over those regions. For example, Cloud Ring, Outer Ring, Fountain and Fade all have/had Gallente colonies there, or otherwise have a majority of Gallente population there (perhaps CCP is hinting your character may very originate from those regions).

Now, the opening description of Ruthless is..."Join young Otro Gariushi on the cold streets of the ice planet C8-CHY VII as fate catapults him into a life of crime and piracy"...I think it was an Ishukone world right? But now what has happened to it? The system is probably owned by some silly nullsec alliance called "l33t str33t" or something equally immersion-breaking. Similarly, Tribute is described as a key region for trade between the State and "northern territories" but, again, the capsuleer alliances now hold sovereignty there.

There are numerous landmark descriptions that talk about military presences in various nullsec areas too...to me, nullsec is the 'true frontier' of EVE, where the factions or even just private corporations settled remote colonies on worlds in empty systems. But now, the leverage for this sort of worldbuilding has sorta been eradicated now. With Dust 514, it sounds like these worlds are now outright property of the alliances, and all this "Terminus Systems" vibe has gone.

Or maybe the factions figured "Meh, we're not gonna be able to justify colonizing it ourselves, let's just give it up to the capsuleer alliances, and we'll get a shitload of money through sov payments from CONCORD".

I'll put my 2cents out there and you can do with it what you want: Nulsec alliances are some of the biggest (unintentional in most cases) RP entities. Becoming empires to ourselves in "lawless" space with ties remaining to "empire" space,effectively taming the areas that CONCORD couldn't (or wouldn't) in the past.

We know that nulsec is full of colonies, some controlled by the big 4 nations, some by megacorps, some by the non-CONCORD factions, and others that are independant. A quasi-stable logistics (or at least constant pressense of a logistics supply) would be useful in providing some type of stability for those colonies where TPTB can't/won't.

And, while they might not RP like many would call RP... they are filling a major RP role that CCP has put into the story: those that have succumbed to capsuleer dementia. We joke about it, but there's a reason in PF people are scared/in awe of/worshiping capsuleers, the majority of capsuleers are "crazy" by standard definitions.

We also need to remember that nullsec alliances holding sovereignty in a region does not prohibit the various highsec empires from having operations there either. We know for certain that NOH has a deadspace complex of some kind set up in 0.0 (I think it's Pure Blind); I don't think it's such a stretch to say that there are other facilities set up by the empires out there, serviced by limited-access stargate or jump bridge networks and hidden from our scanners.

I agree.  I've also played the angle for a while that at least some folks within the big four are concerned about null-sec capsuleer alliances (and capsuleers in general, even to the point of working on means of being able to kill them permanently during space combat).

Boundless Creations has facilities in Curse, most Caldari mega-corps have research going on outside of the CEP/CBT's sight (as well as trying to stay out of CONCORD's sight), I'd be surprised if the the Feddies and Amarr didn't have some as well.

I think Eve would have taken a different path if alliances were never introduced; a far more fun path actually. If the ability of corporations to interact was limited at the corporate level, forcing verbal contracts and such, instead of a sovereignty system, we'd have 1,000% more fighting in Eve. Nowadays we just have two major power-blocs, a handful of minor powers trying to suck up to the big bads, and an empire space where 90% of Eve's players reside, because empire monkeys can't hope to take space from even a minor 0.0 power.

I think Eve would have taken a different path if alliances were never introduced; a far more fun path actually. Nowadays we just have two major power-blocs, a handful of minor powers trying to suck up to the big bads, and an empire space where 90% of Eve's players reside, because empire monkeys can't hope to take space from even a minor 0.0 power.

Couldnt agree more.  0.0 is for the most part static, generally divided along 2-3 major power blocks.  It would be great if 0.0 was more contentious and fluid.

There have been a few RP alliances who have held sov. It's quite possible, so presumably the reason more don't do it is they aren't interested enough.

Got to agree here, if corporations were in 0.0 "extending" empire influence and capsuleers were fighting for resources there, then it could have been quite the fight fest.

Afaik, alliances mechanics were added, because players were already creating such a thing out of game, but the concept of sovereignity should have been aimed towards "land rights" or something similar, were you earn the right to exploit resources in space for a planetary goverment or organization.

I just find it a little immersion-breaking there's entities out there that hold sovereignty on a system to the same level as empires called "Wildly Inappropiate" or "STR8NGE BREW"...there could be some genuine worldbuilding stuff if we had the empires go out there and colonize, attempt to control an area from Sansha or Cartel influences.

I mean, one of the largest alliances for a while, thus representing a major capsuleer interest in the entire EVE fictional universe is "GoonSwarm"...sure, if capsuleers are demented, it makes sense, but then that would be a little OTT, and trying too hard. "Look guys, the capsuleers are so demented they call their own alliances after bees lololol"

I think the problem is that if you're going to seriously RP, you're never going to get more than a small percentage of players wanting to join. And these days, holding sov is a mass-effort. You need the numbers.

So either you change your value proposition so that you attract more members (presumably by being less strict on the RP), or you give up on the idea of holding sov.

Focusing on the RP aspect of alliances and not on the game mechanics ...

Capsuleers are that crazy! Turn an ordinary person into a "demi-god" and set him loose in an area without laws, and this is what you would get. I don't find it immersion breaking at all. Street gangs IRL what view themselves as powerful and above the law give themselves strange "lol" names and run around acting in ways that members of "proper society" would not approve of.

You will run into immersion problems if you try RP a member of the "proper society" and have the OOC view that everyone else running around as a member of a street gang with a "lol name" is doing it wrong.

Seriously, we're capsuleers. I see absolutely nothing immersion-breaking with a pack of halfway insane demigods tearing up the space the Empire's are a little too busy to take full control over.
