Role-Play Mercenary Corporation.
« on: 03 Sep 2010, 14:24 »

I have been working on a Mercenary Corporation idea that is fully funded by a outside source (In this case I-RED) That would deal with the general contracts in Crime and Punishment ect, and while not all of its members would RP it could still fill a large gap in a full on decent sized mercenary organization.

The only problem I am running into is finding a experienced RPer and Combat pilot to take the reigns (I would do it but it would need full time attention and I have enough on my plate to deal with I-RED operations.) With I-RED funding, and secret "unofficial" backing, it would be based in the Caldari State but would not hold any direct ties to one faction and offer professional freelance services. It shouldn't be a problem making it grow, I plan on dumping as much time, and isk as is needed to get it running. But for anything to work it needs good leadership.

I have more details but will double check them before I go posting them here, for now I could use any feedback and comments on the subject.

Fun idea, but the market is pretty saturated.

True, but a RP Merc group may not see as many contracts as a already established group. But the RP community may feel more inclined to use the group. I expect that things wont pick up for a few months after its creation.

Wouldn't it be more productive to contact some of the existing "PMCs", see which ones are interested in actually pursuing real contracts, and become one of their primary clients?

It sounds like an interesting idea, if it can be pulled off. There have been dent RP-lite type merc corps in the past.

DUTY. corporation was a Caldari aligned FW corp before they went all out to become Mercs, at that point they became 'unafilliated' (or however the hell one spell that word) and took contracts without bias towards origin of client, though they would not take griefer-contracts or all-out piracy jobs, iirc.

You might want to contact them, if for nothing else than advice and their oppinion, they have been at it for a while now.

That is, if they still exist, I have not checked lately.

Don't get me wrong. I like the idea.

BUT. In the overall mercenary market RP'ers won't be even remotely taken seriously.

You will probably end up very short on contracts, and in order to be competitive you run the risk of your RP 'base' totally unravelling so that you end up just like DUTY.

If you are happy to go RP-Lite(tm), you could do very well.

Well, I've started Kuzutuan-Taashe Kaltiovon purely as a PMC and a PvP oriented corporation which will in all probability undertake third-party contracts in the future when able to sufficiently satisfy client needs. It is however, owned entirely by Kaalakiota as major stakeholder with Lai Dai and Wiyrkomi as minor stakeholders so it certainly won't be taking contracts against the interests of its investors and backers. Yes, that KK contract officer vetting offers is a bitch.

I do like blending form and function though and the RP line of the corporation satisfies its primary in-game activity - killing in the name of Kaalakiota. Which is good, because so long as folks in the corp are happy to put missiles and hybrid rounds downrange they're RP'ing a bunch of cut-throats, scum, and mercenaries in the employ of K-TK.

Works for me. Yeah, the guys and gals of K-TK may not abide by the rules of RP, or really care about being IC, but the corporation RP's at an organizational level - not at an individual level. So it operates in a manner congruent with its background material and philosophy.

Besides, if one wants to be taken seriously as a mercenary corporation you really do have to place the acquisition of killmails as a top priority above all else.

Caldari Information Minister

The current CEO of K-TK is an honest and forthright man, absolutely incapable of engaging in State corporate realpolitik. He loves Kaalakiota, Tibus Heth and the Provist regime and believes they are the best course for the Caldari State and has absolutely no ties with Ishukone in any form. There is nothing to see here, citizen, please carry on with your affairs.

For the State!

This message brought to you by the new Tibus Heth action figure. Be just like your dear State Executor! Now available in three different types of jackboot and with over 100 new patriotic invectives! Along with your favourites such as:

"The Gallenteans shall all drown in the bitter tears of crying mothers!"

and

"Gallenteans don't think. They just roll around in the mud and offer whatever is found between their cracks as the highest product of intelligence."

Why would you choose to be a research-only RP corp, if an enemy can come and blast your POS to kingdom come and your options limited to hiring mercs? -- Bruno Bonner

Coming from a setting where mercenary corporations are a big part of the worldscape, I've often found it frustrating that they don't play a larger role in Eve. It seems like much of the current market is limited to griefing, but there should be a lot of space for non-aligned "security team in a box" groups that industrial/research corporations could hire.

I'd like to relight this thread with an eye to answering the following questions: Can a merc corp that roleplays primarily at an organizational level be used to take some of the heat off of start up or industry focused corporations? Would there be value in using such an organization to introduce general Eve players to the roleplaying community? Why does there seem to be a stigma against using mercs in Eve, and can it be overcome?

The stigma against mercs comes from the belief that people feel that they should be do the walk as well as do the talk.

Basically if you have a worldview and somebody disagrees with you, they will wardec you.

It's basically a primary school mentality, but EVE players are pretty childish so what can you do.
