Hm, I'm not sure about the stigma. Do corps really publicize when they hire mercenaries for defense?

Personally, in my long-range plans, my "combat skill plan" is basically "get hired guns when required."

Not sure about the merc market, but I-RED does advertise itself as committed to combating piracy.  Perhaps surprisingly, the alliance has successfully defended several 'non-combat' corps being harassed.
