[Challenge] Living Spaces
« on: 26 Aug 2010, 17:33 »

As I've mentioned elsewhere, my feeling is that the universe of Eve is a big place - really, really big - with a nearly limitless variety of most everything.

Along those line, I want to challenge the members of Backstage to create descriptions of the sorts of spaces the people of New Eden live in. The interior, exterior, or both.

Traditional, practical, impractical, opulent, impoverished, average, not so average, hand-built, assigned, repurposed, station-side, planet-bound, on an asteroid, in a ship, under-ground, floating, free-falling, falling apart.

Whatever you come up with.

If you want to describe more than one, please put them in separate posts.

If you want to use more than 1k or so words, summarize here and feel free to start another thread.

Likewise if you want to discuss your own or someone else's entry, a new thread would be the appropriate move; this thread is for the descriptions only.

Entries will be eligible for the RP Enrichment Giveaway. Additionally, I'll give out a faction cruiser or two after we get a few entries in. It's not a contest, as such, but you've still got a good chance of getting swag if you make a good entry.

Edit: A note: While podder's residences certainly qualify, I would really like to see a big variety from other aspects of the cluster. Remember you can enter more than one, too. So, if you want to put up a description of your character's place, that's cool, and you can still post description of the cell that that monk from the obscure Amarrian monastic order lives in.

I am going to cheat and simply copypaste two channel motd's.

The Horned Masquerade is a former asteroid mining facility purchased by the Del'thul sisters. It currently serves as Mizhara's home, and also something of a fetishist/nightclub place for non-capsuleers and Mizhara's closer friends or allies. (Not open to the public as of yet, but just might be in the future.) In further into the complex you can find Mizhara's sanctum, her 'home' as it were.

Quote from: The Horned Masquerade
The main hall of the Horned Masquerade complex.

As you enter through the archway shaped like a giant horned skull, your senses are assaulted by the decadent fetishism and sensual entertainment. The closest half of the hall is filled with small stages, upon which various fetishists are plying their craft while guests either watch or join in. The rear half of the hall is a dancefloor where hardcore music barely manages to get through the frequency nullifier field that cuts the room in half, soundwise. Wild looking young people, mostly Matari, are dancing in ways that mimic both violence and sensuality, sweat dripping from their bodies as they move.

What appears to be the old control room, embedded in the wall one floor above this main hall, is covered in a huge cast metal horned skull 'mask'. One way glass is barely visible within the giant eye sockets, suggesting there is something behind it. A stairway at the very rear of the hall appears to lead into this place, guarded by two large and heavily armed Brutor and one Slaver Hound. Servants wearing horned masks and very little else are weaving through the crowds, bringing drinks from the bar that's seen through a small door at the right of the hall from the entrance, or various fetishist tools and toys from a small servant's entrance to the left.

Heavily armed guards are stationed at the entrances and archways around the place, and also intermittently along the walls. Slaver Hounds stalk freely around the place, obeying the orders of only a few guards or Mizhara herself, who sometimes sit in what appears to be a stone hewed throne on a raised dais right underneath the horned skull that covers what used to be the control room.

Quote from: Mizhara's Place
The first thing one would notice when entering is the exposed natural rock of the ceiling and walls. No bulkheads were installed here, perhaps due to the beautiful glittering light-patterns reflecting from the crystals in the rock. Especially since all the lighting comes from open flames around the room, presumably fed fuel through hidden lines.

A large room, it seems to have the function of living room and bedroom in one, as both opulent and luxurious furniture is all over the room along with a giant bed in the back. All the furniture is strikingly adorned with carved patterns, and have satin covered cushions. The main difference from it's last incarnation is that most of the furniture is made from the same stone as the walls. Only the upholstery and comfortable seats are... flammable.

The one striking thing about the room, is that there are no paintings, pictures, holo projectors or other such items. In fact, it seems to be entirely devoid of both entertainment and technology.

The bed however, deserves special mention, as it's covered in either black silk sheets or a black rubberlike sheet, depending on it's usage. As large as it is, it could easily be used by ten people at once. The walls and bedposts, however, have hooks and rings mounted to them, their purpose not readily apparent.

There are two expensive wooden closets, one on each side of the bed, their contents unknown.

A pedestal in the center of the room requires special mention as it seems to pull the attention of all who enters. On it lies two collars and a necklace. All are marked with the Horned Mask voluval mark.

EDIT: The reason I posted two in one post, is that they're both part of the same 'home' as it were. Just different areas of the same asteroid.

This is a housing complex typical of Simon's home county (on Intaki Prime):

Each floor is fairly homogeneous, being a complete home for a family, with a combined den and kitchen on the entry side of the house, storage and bathroom in the middle and sleeping rooms on the far side.  The back wall is solid rock, the complexes being attached to cliff-sides and the sheer faces of mesas.  The rest is constructed of clay brick and timber, reinforced in modern times with alloyed support beams.  Floors were traditionally added downwards (the highest floor being the first) as the extended family grows, with external stairs connecting them.  Nowadays, complexes may reach all the way to the ground, tower above the cliff tops, be built entirely inside the rock facing, 'hang' supported by the house behind it or even be suspended from the overhang of a large cliff.  Girders and modern cabling makes such things possible; houses are often 'sealed' along the walls and floors with a polymer spray to prevent the brickwork from crumbling and to keep dust, weather and bugs out.

Homes are decorated with rugs, wall hangings and, increasingly, media screens.  Furniture is locally produced from native trees.  It is now common practice to install windows, open air decks and hanging bridges between residences.

Here is something about a village in the south of Intaki Prime.

A wide, muddy stretch of the River Ganga cuts through the town, and from each side, docks extend like wooden fingers into the soupy water. A simple, roped punt is hunched on the shore and a man is asleep on its beams in the warm sun.

On this side, a bar oozes drunken fishermen out onto the street along with strains of raucous music. Many of them slump over to long, elegant boats tied off and floating on the brown tide.

On the other side, seekers in a red stone monastery wade into the water to soak in the wisdom that flows down from sacred springs in the distant mountains.

The future came to this place with the Gallente, years ago, but this town clings to the old ways, just as the warm wet air clings to the flesh of the people who live here.

Then comes the rains, sweeping down from the looming Himavant, and the town is shrouded. The rain lasts for three months of the year and soaks the palms of the plantation, pooling on the already sodden ground. Dark, moaning winds lash the houses, tearing aside the roofs of dried palm leaves. Each house, built of wooden beams strung together with mosquito netting and surrounded by a great wall of sharpened stakes, becomes a frightful place, smelling of rain and rot, of sickness and sweat. The locals argue often, confined to their tiny houses, and their yells are punctuated by the cries of the ill.

In the monastery, the circling winds create a sonorous effect, like a constant mantra echoing in open, stony spaces, and those within huddle in their wide halls to consider the infinite.

The rains ease to a light drizzle for several days before the downpour resumes, and during this time everyone returns to work, tending the damaged plants in the fields and repairing the houses, like a pack of busy ants.

This is the time of the predator, especially the vicious Rkshas, the brown coat, the destroyer, who comes after the rains, having hungrily waited in dim silence for the rains to end.  Many is the farmer, having emerged to repair the broken stockade around their swampy home, who has found themselves to be that long-awaited meal.

Tiberius walked through the austere doorway of brushed metal with a sigh of weary surrender. As he took in a breath, a flood of memories washed over and through him, fragments of a past life. This was not the home of a capsuleer but the 40th floor condo of a Holonet producer. It had all the trappings – trendy Caille neighborhood, a curtain glass view of the Crystal Boulevard’s glittering spires, a collection of kinetic sculptures and light fountains that had been last year’s next big thing. To the capsuleer, these things seemed like artifacts of an ancient and forgotten culture. Even the old-fashioned Ida tapestry on the wall, an obligatory nod to his Intaki heritage, felt foreign to him.

As though to shake off the haunting chill of his memories, Tiberius waved his arm at the blank white space of the eastern wall in an arcane gesture. Old circuits hummed, and the wall was illuminated by ghosts. A 2.5d projection screen, now an embarrassingly dated piece of technology, displayed the opening reel of the 18:00 TridNet news. Tiberius grimaced and waved his arm again. The news was replaced by a flickering image of a beautiful young Gallente woman.

Tiberius smiled half-heartedly at his personal AI, “Audrey, be a doll and put this place up on the market for me. I don’t care how much, just low enough so it sells. I can’t stand this old shit anymore.” He kicked weakly at one of the kinetic sculptures, sending delicate cylinders and spheres of isogen rolling across the white polymer-tiled floor.

Audrey smiled back warmly, either unable to process his foul mood or choosing to ignore it. “The market is up in this neighborhood. I’m sure we’ll fetch an adequate price.” The cool, slightly accented tones of the AI’s voice always made him feel better

CROW Public Offices

The room is unmistakably Caldari, absolutely devoid of any unnecessary ornamentation: only a table upon which rests a datapad and a personal computer. Several chairs surround it, its cushions matching the grey coloured walls. The most striking features are the massive plated metal floor and the view of the station docking bay through the window.

The Opium Den

Dim lights tint the amber scented room. Heavy velvet curtains embroidered with shapes of fantastic dragons and other mythological creatures cover the walls, giving the place a deep and solemn atmosphere. A hanging kakemono written in roman type reads: "There were opium dens where one could buy oblivion, dens of horror where the memory of old sins could be destroyed by the madness of sins that were new". A lone king sized bed lies in the middle of the room, covered with black silk sheets.

The Tea House

A massive wooden floor austerely decorated in Caldari fashion, with some heavy concrete vases here and there holding kresh branches. There are some tatamis lying on the floor for the guests to sit on. The feeling of austerity is reinforced by the sound of deep solemn drums played by a hidden sound system. A hanging scroll displays an exquisite calligraphic work that reads: "True tea is made with water drawn from the depths of mind".

We are proud to offer the capsuleer community a wide selection of the best tea varieties in the galaxy. Our products have been surgically digitized from naturally grown tea leaves with state of the art technology in taste pattern digitalization and analysis under precise laboratory conditions, and only offered to the public after the approval of the most renowned tasters of Caldari Provisions. We hope you enjoy our services in the calm soothing environment that is characteristic of The Tea House.

  • Hak’len Tea (Black Tea): The true Caldari Tea, made with the finest selection of kresh leaves from New Caldari. Originally from Caldari Prime this slightly bitter variety found a new home in New Caldari. Today, thanks to genetic engineering and nanotechnology it's near to impossible even for the most discerning palate to distinguish a New Caldari Hak'len from a Caldari Prime one.
  • Fuukiuvestan Black (Black Tea): The Fuukiuvestan Black is the rarest and the most prestigious of black teas. Indigenous herb from the Fuukiuvestan mountains, Its excellent quality is the result of climate and elevation. Each harvest period produces a slightly distinctive taste depending on the season, but overall is characterized by a darker, full-bodied cup.
  • Kaalakiotan K’vire Green (Green Tea): Not as mythological as the Hak'len tea, but twice as widespread, this green tea variety is well known for it's smoky aroma and exquisite jade green color in the cup. This tea has a mixture of subtle sweetness and bitterness.
  • Matigu Green (Green Tea): A native Camellia sinensis from Matigu, New Caldari, This variety is characterized for a smooth taste which remains long in the mouth, and has less bitterness than the Kaalakiotan K'vire; It is highly appreciated for its significant dosage of caffeine.
  • Iyen-Oursta Red (Red Tea): Obtained from the dry leaves of the Aspalathus linearis plant that grows in abundance in Iyen-Oursta VI, it is valued for its unique and refreshing taste and its strong aromatic qualities. It brews up a warm reddish brown color, is full bodied and slightly sweet.
  • Tasabeshi-Ono White (White Tea): Two different herbs grown in the neighbouring systems of Tasabeshi and Ono blend together to create one of the finest white teas. Delicate in flavor as well as color, the tea has a subtle, slightly sweet flavor and a mellow creamy or nutty quality.

Living Stone

The space was small, but it was her own, a place of rest. There was another gentle thud as a mining ship detached from the far side of the complex, slipping with a whisper into the blackness of space.

She spun the lock, and the bulkhead obligingly opened with a creak, allowing her passage out of the main corridor of the Colony.

Ahead is a slightly cramped modular hallway, brought in who knows when, from who knows where. The old metal joins had rusted into place, the hall would likely remain here for hundreds of years to come.

Pictures cover the walls, smiling faces of hundreds of friends and relatives, living and past, tearful and happy reminders of her five hundred years of history. A short distance along the hallway, there is a small side room on the left, a coat room, for entertaining guests, as well as containing a space suit for use in an emergency. Today, her robes are the only ones that hang there, she glances in the mirror at the end of the room with a sigh, her face is young, but her eyes are beyond ancient, fully of wisdom, and emotion.

Leaving the room she goes the rest of the way down the hall, passing a small guest bathroom, before the walls change from industrial metal, to living rock. The walls are smooth, the formerly rough surface smoothed by the passage of thousands of hands, through her five hundred years of history with this place.

There are more pictures on the walls, as well as paintings, mostly done by her, of everything imaginable. The stone is cool on her bare feet, its nice after a long day, wearing her shoes, trodding through the metal halls of the colony. The furnishings are threadbare and mismatched, but look comfortable, they've seen a lot of use, and have aged well, better then her, she surmises.

She passes through into the warm little alcove that is the kitchen and puts water on for tea, setting it to a long low burn that would warm take at least an hour to boil it, the counters and cupboards are all carved out of the stone, with rich wood for facing. The Refrigerator is covered with more pictures, as well as a few notes, and a shopping list. She frowns at it, its been a while since that list was up to date.

She exits the kitchen, and climbs the steep, narrow little staircase, going upstairs.

A small balcony looks down into the living room, it wraps around the room a quarter of the way, and leads her bedroom, where her bed is still unmade. The upper floor is wooden, in exquisite expense, that she slaved over for months all those generations ago, its smooth and slightly warm under her feet.

She walks to her bedroom, passing from wood to soft carpet as she opens the dark wooden door and enters. The bedroom contains the only window, a long curving section of armored crystal, providing a view of beautiful rings of the gas giant the colony orbited, and casting a faint blue light throughout the room. The walls here are so covered with pictures that the dark stone walls can scarcely be seen.

As she feared, the bed is unmade, and there are a few sets of discarded clothes on the floor. She glances about at the slight mess with a tired sigh before fishing her bathrobe from the hook behind the door and padding back to the bathroom.

The bathroom is large, with a large bath, and a standing shower and the bathroom sections are separated by walls of glass bricks. The shower is carved smoothly out of the rock, she turns it on, and water cascades out of the roof of the stone like a summer storm, pouring off and down small carefully placed catches and protrusions in pleasing little waterfalls, babbling lyrically.

She slips out of her clothes while she waits for the water to heat fully, and looks at herself critically. She's not a vain women, and she would normally not care too deeply for her appearance one way or another. But this body was different. Unlike anything that she had experienced in her 600 year long existence, seven rebirths, seven lives, but this... She eyed the line of plugs running down her spine critically.

This was when everything changed.

*Ahem - loosens collar* this has simply prompted me to write something right now - its a loose interpretation and more of a description of generic areas within the Empire - enjoy the rougness :)

-----------

The slums of the Amarrian Empire are umong the worst in the cluster, secluded down deep within the bowels of the Empires giant gilded cities these rusted, narrow and cluttered rows of houses barely support life, to walk down a street in these slums was more dangerous than to stand openly infront of a Rebel Minmatar wearing the robes of the Theology Council. As a result of this, and the continual oppresion of the Minmatar peoples, many slaves and even former slaves of the Imperial elite live in these decrepid places, with little or no policing other than the local formation of cults and gangs areas like these are havens for criminals and outlawed groups, it is unsurprising then that the Blood Raider Cartell recruits many to its cause from these underworld slums.

An standard example of street in these slums would be of multistory buildings, often made of nothing more than bare slabs of concrete, sometimes not even reinforced with other metals. many are crumbling and in states of complete dissrepair, what windows originally may have existed are now replaced by sheets of armour plating as the gunfights and death can easily spill into the homes of those surrounding these bloody incidents and thus, many of these buildings and walls not only have jagged holes and punctures from low grade projectile weapons to clean incisions from the Amarrian style laser weapons.

Completely ignored by those living worlds above, these slums continue life in its own brutal fassion untill such a time as they spill over into the realms of the ordinary Amarrians, at which point the local authorities storm and repress the locals untill the norm is returned.

When Cia moved her accommodation to a specially built hab-unit inside a cargo can in her hanger, she initially gave Camille an overly free hand in the interior decoration.

It turned out like this:

"Inside Ciarente Roth's cargo hanger a medium secure container stands near the office, a door with a coded lock and DNA scanner guarded by four armed marines set in its side.

Beyond the door is a garden, complete with a twenty-foot high fig-tree and a wide variety of flowering plants - one only of each species - planted seemingly at random. A narrow path leads to a habitation unit constructed out of steel.

Inside the hab-unit, the steel walls are covered with plaster and the deckplates with wooden overlay.

The front door to the unit opens into a large living area furnished in a riot of colour: four huge purple velvet lounges, a blue and red striped rug, a bookshelf made of driftwood and painted in gold. In the middle of the square formed by the lounges is a huge coffee-table made from what seems to be a hull segment of a shuttle. Against the wall by the bookshelf is a drinks cabinet made entirely of brass embossed with intricate patterns, with a large, jade-green ornate waterclock precariously perched on top.

To the left, a corridor leads to bedrooms.

To the right, a staircase leads to a second story with a small, well equipped laboratory, and an office. The wall beneath the staricase is entirely filled by an array of fibreoptic lamps in every colour of the rainbow, like a bank of flourescent, brightly glowing ferns, casting continually moving shadows across the room.

At the back of the living area is a bright orange dining room table surrounded by eight green chairs with blue cushions. Beyond the table, a door leads to a large, well appointed kitchen filled with every kind of cooking equipment, cutlery and crockery imaginable, predominately in yellow and orange but also in red, purple, blue and green."

After Cia moved to Heimatar and stopped taking the frentix, she had a new hab-unit prepared and furnished it herself:

"Inside the Roth Hanger, a large secure container sits. Marines guard the door, which is secured with a coded and DNA scan lock.

Inside, the walls and roofs of the container are made up of holo-screen that show a view of rolling hills and open sky, changing to fit the time of day. A manicured garden blends with the holo-projection, and a cobbled path leads to a single-story house wreathed with ivy.

Past the thick oaken front door, a wide, flagstoned entrance holds a coat-rack, a shoe-stand, a number of cupboards and a thin hall-table bearing a bunch of large yellow roses in a cream vase. The walls here, as everywhere, are limewashed plaster in pale yellow, the doors and trim in dark wood.

To the right, a door leads to bedrooms and a bathroom. Directly ahead, two doors open to a small study on the right, and a formal dining room on the left, furnished with a mahogany table and chairs.

To the left, a wide archway leads into a single huge room where it is clear most of the business of living is done. Closest to the door is an arrangement of couches and arm-chairs in pale yellow with a thin dusky rose stripe, a low coffee-table between them, set around the focus of a large fireplace which has a discreetly hidden holoscreen above it. Beyond the couches is a large, battered wooden table, surrounded by ancient-seeming mismatched wooden chairs.

Further back is the kitchen, separated from the rest of the room only by a counter, equpped with a substantial pantry and cold-storage unit and the latest equipment, as well as an assortment of more traditional kitchenware.

Rugs in pale yellow and dusty rose are scattered across the floor. Bookshelves by the fireplace hold print-books and holoreels, one surrounded by the faint shimmer of a stasis field and containing books cracked and yellowed with age.

Artworks in contemporary Minmatar style are scattered on the walls, and in the centre of the wall to the left, on a low plinth, is a stone statue of a sitting woman pouring from a jar, emphasising the lines and curves with no fine detail. The curve of her back and the stretch of her neck are very sensuous; the face hinted at rather than revealed.

All the rooms have large windows looking out over the garden and the holographic horizon, as well as skylights showing the holographic sky. Once the holo-sun has set, they are lit by standard lamps scattered around the house, providing a warm, diffuse glow, with the exception of bright task-lights focused on the work-surfaces in the kitchen, and a chandelier in the dining room.

The over-all effect is of both comfort and elegance: the occasional scattered detritus of a eight-year-old, such as schoolwork on the coffee-table, or shoes on the hall floor, mitigates the quiet tastefulness of the decor and establishes this is a home, not an exhibition in a museum on Gallente interior design."
