That's not so huge these days. It's big, but not to the point of melting graphic cards, except maybe old or low cost ones.

I'm definitely backing this up, the game looks nice, but that is thanks to the art direction, not to the quality of the technology.

Maybe just skin some extra animated textures onto them, if you don't want to completely revisit the model. Something other than just the same ship with different paint!
