Generally they are OOC for me, but when possible I'll like with a character that would appreciate the post as well.

I keep my approvals in-character, especially if they are visible to other characters/players. It's just another way to show support for people who align with my character's goals, and give me a potential opportunity for RP with someone I may never get to meet in space/chat rooms in-game.

I tend to think of them as OOC.

I smiled recently because I made a mildly sarcastic IGS post about someone and found that the target had "liked" it.

I use it OOC as well. Given to posts I consider well written, like (duh) or that simply made me chuckle. ;)

The 'likes' I give out are 100% OOC, and I use them to give props to posts that are informative or entertaining yet don't really need a direct response.

I'm pretty sure if anyone ever asked me about the likes I've given, I could come up with an IC reason for them.  (Celeste, in particular, takes perverse delight in well-reasoned arguments, even if she disagrees with the person making the argument.)

Adding mine to the "OOC choice" pile. The like system is to heavily influenced by decidedly OOC cultures and factors for me to view it as totally IC.

Since when is that type of delight perverse?  :o

My likes are IC, typically for well-written stuff that Samira would agree with or respect regardless of who is posting it.

There's certain stuff though that I find a very good argument, but that Samira would be opposed to, so I don't 'like' those even though I'd like to. Ava's post here for example is something I really want to like because it's a spot-on perfect assessment that is impossible to argue against, but it'd be out of character to do so.

When she decides to be helpful and post points that the speaker could have made in order to have an even stronger argument.

Or, er, I should say:  "on those rare occasions when I feel like it wouldn't be too much trouble for me to have her decide to be helpful and post points that the speaker could have made in order to have an even stronger argument".

I still don't see that as perverse, otherwise every good philosopher would be a pervert. <.<

I was kind of torn this with Luna.. first liking things because I thought it was well written or entertaining, then deciding Luna IC certainly wouldn't "like" it!  Since most people seem to treat it as OOC I won't fret about this anymore  :)
