Like, Liking, Likes.
« on: 01 Mar 2013, 16:28 »

Another player asked me yesterday why I "liked" their IGS posting, as our "characters" have opposing politics.

I explained that for me, I don't necessarily see "liking" another persons post, in most cases, as an in-character occurrence.

If "I" consider that a posting is well written, appropriate and advances the topic at hand, I may well "like" it.  Even if the posting is in opposition to James' opinion or point of view.

They were of the opposite opinion that one should "like" only in-character.

Lucky for me words like "should" have very little impact, that and James is perceived to have a loose grip on reality.  :D So can justify supporting things I sometimes oppose in-character in that manner.

I was wondering what other players opinions regarding "liking" are.

I nearly avoid all use of the tool. The few exceptions tend to be IC posts I can see Ghost wanting to put his mark of approval on.

It's useful for avoiding "I agree" forum clutter, but not much else than that.

I use them as a little wink that I approve.  Pretty OOC to me.

At the beginning I almost never used them, most like Ghost.

Now I tend to use them ICly as well as OOcly (more OOCly though) to approve posts that I find well thought, written, etc, on the moment. I try to be the less biased possible and have given some likes even to the people I may have a few issues with OOCly, or to posts from the enemies of my character that she thinks insightful.

EDIT : actually since it's mostly OOC for me I consider it purely OOC anyway. At best it may be indicative OOCly that my character could approve the post (but not even sure).

I'm sure this topic has been up here before. Anyhow, purely OOC for me.

I usually like posts that I think of as making a good point or being well written. I mainly use it OOCly but really, Nico would like the posts similarly, regardless of whether they advance her point of view or the opposing: If a post is well written or makes agood point, she thinks, it either advances her point, gives her the chance to elaborate her point and sharpen her own position or make her realize that her point of view has been countered by argument and that she was wrong, giving her the opportunity to correct herself. Anyway, that is a good thing, in her book.

I consider it IC on the IGS, though loosely so. Its basically my character giving her stamp of approval to something she read.

IC on the IGS, although it can mean approval of an opposing view that's been well stated.

the like function has long since lost any IC value/relevance it had.

things like the "like and get likes" thread, and the various people that mass-like every post on the forums, mean that people accumulate likes at a silly rate.
a post of "no, you", can pick up dozens of likes from these things.

Which makes the number of likes just an indicator of how many posts someone makes.

it's all rather silly.

Completely OOC, to 'reward' well-made IC posts even of opposing views and statements. Some of the things toons don't get a like for is inane drivel to garner attention or towing the party-line in any way, like spewing the same old tired statements IC that are highly debatable, or sometimes out-right lies.

I use it IC on the IGS.. but any Likes I might get I treat OOC unless I know them well enough so it might be IC.
