Although the subject header might be slightly controversial I do hope we can come to an agreement on this matter.

In the last months I have noticed a development, especially in the ooc non-eve section of the boards, towards an expression of hatred and anger against various individuals and groups.

As far as I understood the purpose and the vision of this forum all discussion was to be kept civil and levelheaded.

It's a big shame that I have to read posts calling for the death, dismemberment, abuse and other acts of violence (physical and other) against other people.

Are you reading the Rote Kapelle killboard and mistaking it for backstage again?   :P

Eh?  If a post offends you or you think it crosses the line of appropriate conduct for these forums, you should report it.

This provides an excellent opportunity to review Rule 3b:

Quote
Rule 3b: If you see or are targeted by a post that violates these rules, click the report button located at the bottom right corner of the post; do not respond in kind!

Lately, we've had a lot of folks reporting posts and then replying directly to the post they reported. Don't do this, as we consider it a violation of the rules and you may be subject to moderation yourself.

I just want you to know that if you disagree with me, I hope you fall into a food processor and end up as dog food.

I feel that this rule encourages each person to become their own moderator.

A report feature on a forum is, by normal operating procedures, a tool of last resort to report something that requires immediate action, such as malware infected links, pornography, and other materials which might compromise the forums themselves.

It seems to be highly irregular for any forum to use it as a means of reporting these sorts of issues. Should not the moderators be reading posts to moderate them?

Soter, asking people to report posts and then leave them alone is quite the opposite of asking anyone to be their own moderator.

Yes, we try to read all posts. No, that doesn't mean we'll catch all of them. And certainly we take community opinion into account.

Laerise, for my part nothing of the sort you are describing here was done. Please go see the proper responce in the OOG/off-topic forum.

I thin you jumped to alot of conlusions and assigned to me opinion I don't have. I despice hackers - to bad for them - but I've never expressed a desire to have them killed and/or mutilated like you claim. If this last part was aimed towards other groups in other treads I can't recall reading them.

For my part, using more clear language and keeping my opinion somewhat cooler than I did would have helped more.

The report button should be used to bring to the attention of the moderators posts that violate the rules. Regardless of what you believe SOP on any other forum to be, for this forum, we use it as a tool to that end.

As with many thing, 'how it's done on some other forum' is not really the relevant issue. We certainly do encourage people to self-moderate, and to report posts that break the rules. As Casiella mentioned, we can't read every post, but we certainly do check into every report - whether or not we ultimately act on it.

Edit:

I also wanted to quote something that is more relevant to the topic at hand:
Quote from: OOG Section Sticky
Want to talk about the newest Modern Warfare game? Maybe you have a humorous link to share? A comment about current events?

This is the place for it. Please tread carefully when it comes to RL religion, politics, and other controversial issues. There are lots of forums for debating that kind of thing, this isn't one of them.

Essentially, while debating serious and controversial issues can be engaging and entertaining, you may want to ask yourself is this particular forum is the appropriate place for it. There are already plenty of other places on the internet dedicated to politics, religion, and the ethics of hacking, for example.

Since my initial question has not yet been answered I will provide an example, sorry Bloodbird.

Aaaah, justice.

I *HATE* hackers. Sad, useless human waste who think they can't be touched and that this give them the right and ability to do as they please. Load up random PC's with viruses, hack private info, steal money over the net, spam random shit like unwanted adds trojans and crap about, make people's lives annoying, because they can. Worst kinds of griefers I know of. I've more respect for bank-robbers, atl they show up and rik their asses for the supposed gains, these guys?

I hope they rot well and long.  don't perticularely like Sony but I've little against them either, so this... No sympathy for these scum. None what-so-ever.

I am especially referring to expressions like "useless human waste", " I've more respect for bank-robbers" and, amongst others, "I hope they rot well and long". Are these kinds of expression okay on these forums then?

I don't see any questions in your initial post.

However, since you've asked, no, those aren't really appropriate things for someone to post.

It is also inappropriate to respond to posts that break the rules - particularly if you've reported them - because that just propagates the problem.

If you have a problem with a post, report it, then leave it alone so it dies, rather than engaging in a lengthy off-topic debate about it.

  • These things just seem to happen...

Honestly, with only a couple of exceptions, I think the posting lately has been quite civil, even when it involves normally imflammatory individuals.

Said folks have my thanks, I hate reading through that stuff nowadays.
