World Ship News ???
« on: 16 May 2011, 14:44 »

note: I may be somewhat crazy.

Earlier today I read a Scope article about the Gallente sending an fleet consisting of several "world ships" plus escorts beyond the rim of the Eve cluster. I've just been looking for this to re-read / add to my list of things to watch and I cannot find it.

Have I gone nuts ?

its technically not a "real" scope article, its by a player character in "The Scope" corp, the post is on the IGS, here's a link:

Aicar appeared after the devblog by Abraxas that announced any more RP news items released by CCP and Mercury were to be discontinued.

Also just noticed the Goons posting, lol

Anyone can swipe an image off the internet and use it to look like an official IC source.

CCP should never have let players go into news agency NPC corps. Abuse like that is shameful.

I dunno, I thought it was pretty creative, and some players have come up with some really interesting bits using The Scope.

I'm glad he did it. I miss having news, and anything is better then nothing, I give him props for sticking his neck out like that.

I'm more impressed by player-created news corps than by people trying to pretend toward legitimacy via NPC corps. Put some effort in.

How do we know that CCP didn't make this choice deliberately? I mean, players are the ones who really know what's going on, and like in real life, one doesn't have to take everything they say in the news at face value.

Quite a few pilots realize that Scope is the Gallente dropout corp. I don't see using it as an RP prod any more pretentious than the conventional forms of loyalism. The player news corporations are nice but joining them or setting up a new one may be a bit of a distraction if one only intends to do some RP journalism.

ISD news, particularly non-player news, is published under the Scope banner. Hence the pretense and appropriation of the banner.

I am quite unhappy about the abandonment of IC news items last year.  So unhappy, in fact, that I applied to Mercury a few months back after releasing the first part of my Hitchhiker's Guide and asked to be given the job.  And received zero response.  Not even a professional notice of rejection.

I don't know what the official fiction staff and Mercury volunteers are really doing with their time these days, but it does not take more than a few hours for one person to sit down and bang out an interesting, several hundred word news item that is cross-referenced to mesh with PF.  How hard is that to do on a weekly basis?  Bi-weekly?  Ever?  Not very.  I understand the decision to drop chronicles, but the suspension of Scope news for this long is what is really "shameful" here.

If a player wants to have a Gallente character join Scope and write inventive news articles about various goings on in this massive cluster and put them on IGS for us to consider, I'm all for it.  We have the option to play along, think up novel ways to respond in-character, and build new stories, or to sit back on our butts and complain about the "pretense" of attempting to write news about non-capsuleer events when CCP won't.

Frankly, I wonder if the company gives a shit about EVE's story at all any longer.  Maybe they do, but they'd rather pack IC content into a form they can charge money for, like Templar One, rather than give it to us for free.  Or maybe they want everything to be directed toward DUST and figure the capsuleers have been given enough lore to work with.  I guess we'll find out if the "mega lore wiki" ever comes into existence.

Until then, bring on the creative, motivated players and their ideas.  It's a big cluster, after all.

I would wager it's harder and more time consuming than you assume to write interesting news articles.

Also, saying that CCP doesn't care about the story and RP is rather laughable, considering that the Incursion expansion was altered massively because of player response to the live events.

Back in the day, the process for getting a story idea all the way from idea phase to publishing phase was exhausting.

You have no idea how many managers and such had to sign off on these things, and of course, no one is online at the same time, so....

I gotta agree with Ken, sure its player driven, and unverifiable, but at least its something. I really miss having generic news to read on a regular basis, and constantly find it irritating that there is nothing new ever.

A bet I'd be willing to make!  :)  As Graelyn points out, the bottleneck is almost certainly not at the writer's desk but elsewhere in the system.  This, I think, is a point in favor of player-driven fiction.

Also, saying that CCP doesn't care about the story and RP is rather laughable, considering that the Incursion expansion was altered massively because of player response to the live events.

Is it rather laughable?  Glad I qualified the statement, then.  Thinking about the diversity of live events that have been run in the past and the degree to which regular IC news items were employed to portray a living, breathing universe, I find the atmosphere created after the Incursion launch to be something of a wasteland in terms of official support for the story and RP.  We were handed a dev blog in December explaining that chrons and IC news were going away and most efforts were to be dedicated to an in-game wiki for lore, which will be debuting... Soon™.

I think this was a poor choice.  Six months on, not only the Incursion storyline, but the entire universe full of slowly-but-surely evolving story threads feels dead to me.  They made the choice to put everything on hold for other priorities and it's resulted in a very quiet New Eden.  One writer putting out a news item every few weeks would be enough to keep things moving, but we don't have even that.

I'm going to go against the "time-consuming" counter-argument. Ken himself has written multiple bits and pieces of random holoseries or companies.

Hell, my own idea for a Federation Air Force and Federal Forces Pator were written up in less than an hour with no planning, all spur of the moment.

Also that "project-in-development" which I do in my spare time. I'll be finishing it after exams in 3 weeks (when I have plenty of time on my hands). If I could do that, then surely a paid employee who does it 9-to-5 can do it too.
