I am quite unhappy about the abandonment of IC news items last year. So unhappy, in fact, that I applied to Mercury a few months back after releasing the first part of my Hitchhiker's Guide and asked to be given the job. And received zero response. Not even a professional notice of rejection.
I don't know what the official fiction staff and Mercury volunteers are really doing with their time these days, but it does not take more than a few hours for one person to sit down and bang out an interesting, several hundred word news item that is cross-referenced to mesh with PF. How hard is that to do on a weekly basis? Bi-weekly? Ever? Not very. I understand the decision to drop chronicles, but the suspension of Scope news for this long is what is really "shameful" here.
If a player wants to have a Gallente character join Scope and write inventive news articles about various goings on in this massive cluster and put them on IGS for us to consider, I'm all for it. We have the option to play along, think up novel ways to respond in-character, and build new stories, or to sit back on our butts and complain about the "pretense" of attempting to write news about non-capsuleer events when CCP won't.
Frankly, I wonder if the company gives a shit about EVE's story at all any longer. Maybe they do, but they'd rather pack IC content into a form they can charge money for, like Templar One, rather than give it to us for free. Or maybe they want everything to be directed toward DUST and figure the capsuleers have been given enough lore to work with. I guess we'll find out if the "mega lore wiki" ever comes into existence.
Until then, bring on the creative, motivated players and their ideas. It's a big cluster, after all.
