Curious what handle(s) everyone uses outside of the EVEosphere. Would be good to know that info if we get around to setting up some non-EVE groups and events (SoaSE, APB, etc.). You can find me on Steam and most other places as Hegemon4Hire.

This group has been set up on Steam for Backstage users looking to connect for general gaming outside of EVE. It's an open public group, so feel free to join at your leisure.

Ninceur (http://steamcommunity.com/id/Ninceur)
More often than not that is the name I use now and since I always have steam running that is usually the simplest way to reach me anyway. ;) It is also the name I have on the Joker server in APB.

Some of you don't show up when I try to look for you on Steam. Maybe privacy settings or some such. I have created an EVE-neutral (no corp/faction affiliations or any of that) public group on Steam for all Backstage folks called "Inspiracy".

It might be a while before you see me. I only run steam when I'm playing a steam game since steam seems to slow down my computer.

I think you beat me to creating that by a couple hours. I checked to see if the group name was taken sometime yesterday and it already was. :o

malkarris on Steam, Malkarris on Live, not sure if capitals matter on either. Feel free to hit me up on either and I will return the favor, just don't be surprised if it takes a while to get a reply, the time I spend gaming on something besides EvE is limited. Just let me know you're from here so I won't dismiss it as spam.

"Holy shit! Batman: Arkham City is on sale."
15 seconds later.
"Holy shit! I already own this game! WHAT DRUGS HAVE I BEEN ON?!"
Seriously, I have -no- recollection of purchasing this game. One of these days I have to go through my long list of 275 Steam Games and figure out what I do and do not own.

Just some advice from a former attorney.
DO NOT SPEND THAT MONEY IF YOU KNOW FOR CERTAIN ITS NOT YOURS.
EVEN IF ITS IN YOUR ACCOUNT.
IT WILL LEAD TO BAD, BAD PLACES.

No worries, I know what the money was from, I just wasn't expecting to see it. The Debit card I use has a reward program so I assume it got converted at the end of the year. I should add that my accounts are with USAA which is less dodgy than others. ;)

USAA rocks. Their insurance, their service, all of it. Theyre amazing. And now...back to the non-derailed thread!

if it's alright to mildly derail the thread, I'm wondering if anyone has thoughts or strong feelings about any of the games in the various daily sales. I took advantage of the first one I saw to pick up portal 1 & 2 (literally the first time I've played portal. The cake was delicious), Maxx Payne (I recall my roommate in college liking it) and all the Sam and Max stuff, for a total of about $25. I'm looking at Stalker and Batman and monday night combat and wondering if any of the above are worth my money.
-
Stalker and Batman both definitely are. No idea on MNC. I'm personally waiting/hoping to see both Saints Row and AC: Revelations to have a daily deal. I think I'll have more than enough games with those to last me the next year, especially with Skyrim...

Got them, will play them whenever I feel like it. ME 1&2 are both 75% off today so I snatched those up, giving the Space Marine game a hard look because, well, I LOVE that universe and it's gotten decent reviews, but it's expensive. Brink looks like it might be hilarious fun, pondering that too.

Ah, seems I've pulled a copy of Two Worlds II (http://store.steampowered.com/app/7520/) out of the great gift pile. Would anyone care to take it off my hands or maybe trade it for some coal?
btw, great deals on Steam right now for the X series: http://store.steampowered.com/video/201310/81324 http://store.steampowered.com/sale/X3/

FYI, the outstanding Magicka (http://store.steampowered.com/app/42910) is ultra cheap on Steam today.

Just got this message on my mail:
Congratulations, you are a Third Place Prize Winner of Steam’s Epic Holiday Giveaway! The Valve Complete pack has been added to your Steam account.
We wish you all the best in 2012, congratulations again!
-
Ooh, congrats!
I have left over and am giving away these things from the holiday stuff:
- 1x 50% off King's Bounty Platinum voucher
- 1x 50% off Costume Quest voucher
- 1x copy of Dangerous Waters (http://store.steampowered.com/app/1600/)
I also have a 33% off Valve voucher, but I'll keep that to use it, unless someone trades in any of my stuff for a Valve voucher with higher discount. Gonna get me HL Episode Two with that.
-
Shotgun Dangerous Waters!
-
Congrads Akrasjel.
I guess I'll throw my stuff up here too. I have the following:
1 25% off any Valve title
1 50% off any Disciples 3 series game
First come, first served, though I might accept bribes. 8)
-
Also available to those who would like them, I am sitting on 25, 33, and 50% off coupons for Valve titles, a 33% off coupon for Skyrim, and a copy of Two Worlds 2.

Just wanted to quickly mention two games on Steam right now:
Evochron and SOL:Exodus. The first one I haven't spent enough time with to really give much of a review yet but it's got serious potential from what I can see. Fantastic effort by one(!) man. SOL:Exodus is what I really wanted to speak of.
It's crap. Seriously, it's horrible crap. STAY AWAY! It's a poor arcade shooter with the depth of toilet paper, the substance/content/texture of used toilet paper and is frankly not worth the price of a single roll of toilet paper. I think I need to go have a poop after this, but I trust the gist of it got through. The game is shit.
This game when compared to Freespace 2, Freelancer, X3, Tachyon: The Fringe or any of the good old games is pretty much what that crap Mech game for Xbox was to the Mechwarrior series on PC. An arcadey insult rather than even a tribute.
-
One of those free games was Portal, the game is realy short and easy in compare to Portal 2 :cube:

Evochron looks awesome, description reminds me a great deal of eve - except with a cockpit! Curious to hear more of your thoughts on the game before I drop money on it.
-
Evochron has a demo, you can try it out.
Seriphyn has it I believe. Ask him if it's any good.
(I did not like it, but that's just me)
-
So far on Evochron:
I don't have too much playtime in that game, but it is a major contender in the genre, I think. It's got a steep learning curve without Eve's forgiving "Even if you don't get X or Y by the end of the tutorial, you can still do Z while learning the other two" tendencies. In Evochron you have to pay attention during the first tutorials and pray you don't miss anything. The game is complex and challenging. The game it's closest to in the genre would probably be the X3 series. Fight, trade, mine, whatever. The differences are there, of course, but for comparison purposes it's close enough.
I'm enjoying the vastness of the game along with the fact that it doesn't hold your hand much.
It's really hard to try to review it without getting another twenty hours of playtime in it first. I guess I just have to mention the cons so far: The graphics are... not AAA. I don't mind it and don't really notice it to be honest, but for some it matters so it needs to be mentioned. It's not too intuitive and it's easy to fuck things up until you learn it. Once you start playing, though... I think you'll like it, especially if X3 appealed to you.

Not good at these online community things but I signed up as "Jowen" (name change may be pending).
I am primarily playing Total War: Shogun 2 at the moment which is the best strategy game I have seen in a long time. Completed a short campaign on Legendary difficulty yesterday.
Now trying the older Total War games (yes, I have never played the series before) but they appear to be missing something compared to Shogun 2.

You have just done your a huge dis-service; the Total War series evolves over time getting better and better with better graphics, game-mechanics and utility. AI keeps improving as well. Compared to Shogun 2 ALL other Total war games lack *something*, it only differs to what the something is. An example; Total War - Medieval 2 - horrible Nation AI, no naval battles, specific other small things that are bland etc. For instance, the Nation AI can't hold to an alliance, or deal or whatever to save their lives - an alliance of decades can be broken whenever he randomly feel like sending one boat to blockade one empty port for one turn, etc. Rome Total war suffered from similar issues and very annoying 'clone army' like graphics.
All of them have the basic Total war feel over them - they all work mostly the same way - so they are good games. But, what made each new installment better and more epic for those who started with Shogun 1 and moved up, has the inverted effect for you.
I'm never going to touch the old Total war games again, simply because I won't have to. I'll be waiting for Rome 2, Medieval 3 etc.
Having said all that, I'm very sad that my PC is not good enough to prevent Shogun 2 from crashing at random times due to lacking hardware. I will have to wait to fully enjoy the game until I get a new PC, and that might be quite some time in the future.
-
Napoleon: Total War is not all bad and has nearly all the elements of Shogun 2. Except just about all the units are a musketeer of some kind and generally follow the rule of higher cost -> better unit. Of course, rifles were the killing weapon of choice at that time but it does simplify gameplay rather a lot.
-
The other Total War games suffer from a very broken AI.
Much of this has been fixed over time by a very robust mod community, Medieval 2 especially. (ask if you're interested and I can hit you with infodumps).
Empire/Napoleon is broken beyond repair IMO.
-
In all honesty I'm not even sure WHAT is wrong with Empire/Napoleon as I've never (and will NEVER) play the latter and the former I got and played for a grand total of 4 hours, a few months back when it was dirt cheat. I've always hated that type of warfare they used in those times; 'civilized' warfare requiring people to LINE UP IN FRONT of the enemy to be SHOT IN DROVES. Fucking moronic, never could stand that. I was dumb enough to get the game and give it an honest try... not happening again.
Grealyn, if there is a mod that improves the AI for Medieval 2 to the point where it's actually playable, I might consider playing it and beating a campaign, I never actually did that...
-
Stainless Steel (http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=417435)
Make sure your M2TW is patched to current, Install SS 6.3 (comes with an installer, this is professionally done), then 6.4, and you're done.
This one actually has multiple well-built AIs, and let's you choose which ones you want to play with.
Damn, now I want to go play it too....
-
I am really enjoying that Legendary difficulty setting for Shogun 2. No ability to save game at will should be attractive to any EVE player. I also tend to play with the "realistic" battlefield setting even when playing on lower difficulty levels.
The AI is certainly not stupid. In my first Legendary game he laid siege to one of my castles with an army having a slight overweight of cavalry and simply waited for me to starve out instead of engaging my archers at an disadvantage. The "Realm Divided" feature is also kick ass and certainly makes for some interesting end game play on short campaigns.
I think next challenge must be a Legendary medium campaign or Very Hard difficulty with as many drop-in battles as possible.
-
Mods for Shogun2 are awesome as well.
Great game, and much more quality package from the makers this time around, but they still screwed things up, for instance ODA is always eliminated in turn 2.
-
Clan Oda was the second largest clan to mine with 16 provinces in my Legendary game.
-
Maybe they've fixed that then.
The fix, at the time, was to start Oda and Takeda as allies from the first turn (via modding).
-
Oda dying on turn 2 happens 5 out of 6 times, but not ALWAYS. I'd hardly call it a break or direct problem, but it's a result of the AI's thinking for sure; Oda vacates their entire castle to go kill X, Y run the castle over on turn 2 while Oda is away. Oda dies.
... the alternative if you played Oda was to box in or send small forces. You are pretty much living or dying on winning ALL up-hill battles the first 6 turns to secure some land and get yourself some breathing-room.
And ofc, if Oda did NOT die, it usually made for a very dangerous enemy. I recall my Ikko Ikki campaign before total break-down ended in an Oda Empire vs Ikko Empire war - Ashigaru casualties were insane and the battlefields were packed full of corpses. Speaking of the Ikko... I love them. That is all.
When/IF I get my new rig some day I'd love to game Shogun 2 online with... well anyone. If anyone else wants to campaign I'd be glad to foster a small alliance for the good of Japan :D
-
Joined. Not giving a name here, its my RL one (same as I've used in Myst/Uru circles as well as in There); Should be easy to spot though, just match the avatar pics. :)
As for games, I had made an interesting purchase over New Years by getting an odd-looking game called Fractal: Make Blooms, not War. Its one of those many puzzler type games you see out there, and seems interesting to the right person. Still figuring out if I'm one of them. Still, if you're looking for something that can play on older notebooks (on trips and such), this looks like a good candidate - will go in mine alongside Bejeweled Twist (80 hrs play so far) and Bejeweled 3 (12 hrs so far).
-
Shogun Lovers should definately take a good long look at this baby:
Shogun All-in-one (http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=437048)
A Combination of all the best mods for TW:S2
Read up on the documentation, it WILL change the way the game is played.
-
Well, that all-in-one mod appeared good for ten minutes. Then I saw that it had increased the number of town garrison units and saw it bad. Is it possible to disable parts of this while keeping the rest?
By bad I mean, they prolong the "start game" as I have to build up a bigger army before attacking anything and after that phase I guess I will have more benefit out of those than the AI clans which is not an assistance I need. I liked the graphical and musical updates, but I do not need modification to the core game play (certainly not things to make it easier for me and more difficult for the AI).
-
Dear Esther... go buy it, now. It's without a shadow of a doubt the most powerful and beautiful experience I have ever had in front of a computer. It's harrowing, haunting, manipulative, seductive and deceitful... and it's amazing. It's cheap too. However, here's something very important to remember:
Don't play this unless you've set yourself up for it. Get some good comfy headphones or use good speakers. Pull all the curtains close, let the room go dark. Keep a good cup of coffee or tea (or whisky, wine, whatever) nearby and turn off your phone. Allow yourself about two hours and sit down and just experience this gorgeous creation.
You know all the other recommendations I've brought here over the years? The reviews, the hyperbole? Well, this one's the ultimate one. I recommend this over all the others.
-
Picked this up on ModDB before it got revamped. I've not yet played the new version (It's downloading now) but I can strongly endorse Miz's comment. Even with home-done map editing and stuff it really took my breath away.
-
Funny, just opened the forums to ask what people made of that game, since a friend was disappointed with it on FB, and she's an artist so she usually appreciates these kinds of things.
Miz, when you say two hours, do you mean that is the entire game time?
-
Usually less than two hours for a single playthrough, yes. All the way down to one hour, depending on your decisions. Perfect length for the experience in question since it allows for the whole thing to be done in one sitting instead of chopping it up into pieces that just doesn't work without the rest.
There's replay value through the randomization in what you might find, hear and experience as well, even though just playing it through once is perfectly validated by it thus becoming a singular experience.
-
Just picked it up and played through it. It was excellent, totally worth it. I was a little curious about the end, though;
when I finished, after flying over the paper boats, the screen went black and just played the sound of waves crashing on the beach. Ten minutes later, the screen was still black, same sound playing. Ten minutes later, no change, I quit to menu. Is that how it's supposed to end or did something glitch?
-
Dear Esther is less of a game, and more of a gigabyte-long, very well-crafted poem. A profoundly unsettling one, at that.

Bah. 17 cards and I couldn't finish off that damn badge. Who needs a copy of Chivalry, Dead Island, Kerbals, Prison Architect, Skyrim, or Tomb Raider?
-
I'm still wondering how I wound up with the Football Manager card after I bought The Secret World. (Never mind that I'm also still wondering what I'm supposed to do with all the danged cards I do have -- that's just personal fail on my part, I imagine.)

Sell them to suckers on the marketplace and feel superior?
