Hypogeum
Bang! Bang!
The crew beat on the bulkhead door,
Accusing with their mocking tone:
Tell us! Why did you not do more?
Was it not enough to die here alone,
In the darkness of sins defined,
With light of God that reveals in beam,
Prison walls which have now confined,
Our captive hope and futile dream!
Bang! Bang!
The crew smash bones against the pier,
Floating with silent martyrs gone before,
Upon the waves of guilt and fear,
Beneath ancient stars of twilight shore,
Twice buried in forgotten sands,
Of time? Held once, then God again reclaims,
Drowning souls lost in distant lands,
Whose final duty lying tongue defames!
Bang! Bang!
But now the final breath awaits,
Alone, to crawl before the gates,
Beyond lies at last! Paradise.
To confess as this life abates:
My God, did I knock once, or twice?
