As someone who NEVER uses Mods for Total War games, I'd say rather that they have a reputation of being extremely buggy on launch and require significant patching.

I'd say that, for the most part, the improvements brought by modding are a little more subjective in nature - such as rebalancing and tweaking.

Shogun 2, for example, plays flawlessly without modding - especially the Fall of the Samurai, which finally cured Diplomacy of the 'Realm Divide' trainwreck.

Yes basically Total War is more or less crappy IMO, with slightly less crap after significant patches and delays.

SEGA do NOTHING but ruin games these days, they have a terrible publishing reputation for a reason.

I find total war games rather awesome for certain game aspects, but I have only played the best of them, which is Shogun 2, had a blast in multi with friends, and that was at least a year after release, so... Never had to deal with their buggy releases...

I'm not much into Warhammer, for which I know next to nothing, but I could be open to it and willing to learn if it proves interesting (a bit more into 40k, but still a neophyte on many aspects).

Because in Warhammer Fantasy, the Empire faction is basically the Holy Roman Empire with more guns, sorcery and triple the religious zealots.
