Blocking People!
« on: 15 Feb 2013, 11:25 »

Jekaterine was kind enough to show me how to block/ignore somebody on Backstage today, so I thought I would show everybody else how it is done:

Hover over the "Profile" dropdown menu and select "Account Settings"
Under the Modify Profile section on the left side, click "Buddies/Ignore List"
Make sure you click "Edit Ignore List" before trying to add their name, otherwise they will be added as a buddy!
You'll now see a text entry box that says "Add To Ignore List"... type their name in.

Now that they are ignored, you will no longer see their posts. You will still be able to see quotes of their posts, but not the post itself. You probably also won't be able to receive private messages from them.

Enjoy your freedom!

In general I approve of using the block feature to improve your forum viewing experience. Unfortunately quotes can still by-pass it, but it helps.

Now, as a moderator on the other hand ... continue to report with punctuality, please :P

I block people on forums when I am no longer interested in indulging them with conversation or direct replies, yet they are the type of poster that provides bait that I am sorely tempted to reply to. Blocking them solves that.

Once the blocked person is quoted, someone else has responded for me... either in a calm and decent manner which is always nice to see, or by flaming the flamebait the way I wanted to... which is even more satisfying. Either way, I no longer feel the urge to reply to the bait.

Forums are PvP.

I play EvE because I like non-consentual PvP.  ;)

(This is a good 1000th post, I think)

Is there a like button?  How about plus-rep?  Can I get one of those for this post?

Forums are PvP.

This forum isn't.

Sticking your head in the ground has never been a good strategy for me.

Perhaps it is for some and therefore the OP is good info.

Nice to know that there is a possibility for blockage here.

Same, I am not a fan of that kind of tools.

It only hampers and damages the mutual understanding on what's going on when people start to have their own block lists full of people. Like Sepherim says it starts to be kind of like Babel.

And of course, you can not block a mod unless you are suicidal. So being a mod is a good safeguard against not being blocked, I guess.

+1. I like blocking features. I try to see and use them in the same light as moderation  - not a punishment, or value judgment, simply a tool. I only have a small handful of people blocked, and only in the EVE client at that, but my life is significantly better simply for not feeling forced to read or respond for what they say. I'm sure theirs is better for not getting any of my sarcastic replies, too. Win all around.
