Death to the fascist spooks!
« on: 12 Nov 2012, 14:12 »

The below, I think, captures the essence of Gallenteans having very different views regarding the Federation. Seriphyn was highly unprofessional but, hey, he'd join a coup if there was a way to do that in-game! Devchar is "Thoun Gaterau" of the Federal Intelligence Office.

[16:34:12] Seriphyn Inhonores > Let's see what this Office gits are up to...
[16:34:27] Seriphyn Inhonores > /emote coughs, "Those Office gits"
[16:35:03] Thoun Gaterau > Given your history, Inhonores, I would have thought you might have a little more respect.
[16:35:15] Ethan Blacknova > /emote coughs.
[16:35:45] Scherezad > /emote 's connection pops active but she doesn't say anything.
[16:35:54] Seriphyn Inhonores > /emote hides a grin behind clearing his throat, "Whoops. Of course, Officer Gaterau"
[16:36:04] Thoun Gaterau > I'll be sure to include your correspondence in my report to the Senate.
[16:36:48] Morwen Lagann > I think I'm happier not having pointed out you had an active connection to this channel. Funnier that way.
[16:36:50] Seriphyn Inhonores > /emote pulls the corners of his lips down, getting serious, "I'm sure you're aware, officer Gaterau, of the tensions that exist between the regular military and your secretive organization"
[16:37:35] Ethan Blacknova > I appear to be having trouble engaging my warp drive.
[16:37:45] Thoun Gaterau > We're all on the same team here, Lieutenant.
[16:38:09] Seriphyn Inhonores > Demotion now?
[16:38:24] Seriphyn Inhonores > Yes, bein' on the 'same team' is exactly what Roden and Blaque would say.
[16:38:38] Ethan Blacknova > /emote alters his uplink stream, displaying telemetry showing an Anshar Incorporated cargo container above Evaulon VII.
[16:39:01] Thoun Gaterau > I suggest you tread carefully with your words.
[16:39:45] Seriphyn Inhonores > /emote holds up his hands, capitulating, "Apologies, officer Gaterau. I'm aware of the FIO's senior order of precedence". He sighs, speaking in routine, "If you need anything, let me know"
[16:39:55] Jev North > All of us? Hm.
[16:39:58] Scherezad > /emote smiles a tense little smile
[16:40:11] Pieter Tuulinen > This whole conversation will look just great in that IGS thread on the freedoms inherent to life in the Federation.
[16:41:40] Thoun Gaterau > Feel free, pilot. The fact of the matter is, a military organization retains its rank and file regardless of Government it serves.
[16:41:48] Scherezad > "Freedom, um, it, it's never, um, absolute. Always, uh, always relative." She pauses briefly, "Interesting to, um, to see it, see it.... uh, lain bare."
[16:41:56] Ethan Blacknova > /emote the live telemetry shows a sudden change, a buzzard sweeping in to grab the container and whatever it may have contained, just as a Helios arives.
[16:43:10] Seriphyn Inhonores > /emote tries to expound while still being diplomatic, "I...we regulars have to abide by the Federation's laws. The FIO sometimes...finds it...necessary, to act...decisively and quickly", he coughs, "Shall we say"
[16:43:18] Ethan Blacknova > "I hope that wasn't important."
[16:44:33] Ethan Blacknova > "Whatever the container really contains, it is now in the hands of the capsuleer pilot Slythorns who is adamant that it contained a single Light Armour Maintenance Bot I"
[16:44:53] Ethan Blacknova > "I am moving back out of direct range. Will continue to provide what I can."
[16:44:59] Seriphyn Inhonores > Doesn't appear to have a reason to lie...
[16:45:37] Seriphyn Inhonores > Well, I've got exactly 364 marines onboard, yell if you need them, officer Gaterau. I'm sure I can transfer them directly to your command.
[16:46:13] Thoun Gaterau > Ground forces are already in place. Your assistance is not required.
[16:46:52] Seriphyn Inhonores > They don't happen to be dressed in all black with a four-letter acronym on their uniforms, do they?
[16:47:12] Innocent Mind > Evenin'.
[16:47:29] Thoun Gaterau > Classified.
[16:47:59] Seriphyn Inhonores > /emote looks incredulous, muttering a 'fedoshit'.
[16:48:21] Seriphyn Inhonores > Right. I'll be on standby regardless.
[16:50:01] Scherezad > /emote grins an empathetic smile at Seriphyn but says nothing
[16:53:03] Seriphyn Inhonores > /emote tries to look unperturbed in returning Scherezad's glance, smiling faintly.

[16:53:05] Ethan Blacknova > /emote 's feed seems rather tame, save for the appearance of an atron and merlin on scans in proximity to the planet.
[16:53:33] Ethan Blacknova > Thoun Gaterau > Cordon remains in place extending out 500 kilometres from suburbs of the city of Rilnais.
[16:54:24] Ethan Blacknova > Thoun Gaterau > Ground units will be halted at the cordon. Stasis webification arrays are in place to ground any air traffic in breach of the no-fly order.
[16:55:05] Seriphyn Inhonores > I'm assuming the Rilnaisian government has agreed to this, officer Gaterau.
[16:55:40] Morwen Lagann > Given the situation I'm sure that they'd have no reason not to.
[16:57:06] Ethan Blacknova > /emote the merlin suddenly disappears from the feed.
[16:57:09] Thoun Gaterau > This is a classified operation, Lieutenant. If you need to know specifics, you'll be informed. Until then, your co-operation as a Federal Citizen is mandatory, and is of course appreciated.

[17:19:06] Seriphyn Inhonores > Since it appears personnel not rostered for this operation are unsurprisingly denied accessing the details, how long is this cordon in Rilnais going to last?
[17:20:02] Thoun Gaterau > As long as it takes for the situation to be resolved.
[17:20:28] Mikhail Lukash > In other words: a long, but undisclosed amount of time.
[17:20:32] Scherezad > "Thank you for, um, for keeping us, um, informed. Of your, ah, your activities."
[17:20:49] Morwen Lagann > I hope it will be resolved quickly, then. With everything that's happened already I'm sure people are eager to get back to something resembling normal.
[17:21:32] Thoun Gaterau > I quite agree, Miss Lagann. The sooner we can return the situation to normal, the better.
[17:21:39] Seriphyn Inhonores > Forgive my persistent boldness 'ere, Gaterau, but it appears nobody seems to know what the situation is. The Serpentis lost. I don't think this fits in with the right to free information...
[17:21:48] Seriphyn Inhonores > The same rights you and I defend, mister Gaterau.
[17:22:24] Morwen Lagann > I'd think given the volatile nature of the Isirus plant, Seriphyn, that the fact that the incident happened in the first place is enough to merit the FIO's close attention.
[17:22:35] Thoun Gaterau > The right to free information is dependant on whether the release of said information could potentially be a breach of Federal security and pose further risk to our citizens.
[17:23:06] Thoun Gaterau > You, of all people, as a former Federal serviceman should know this.
[17:23:12] Seriphyn Inhonores > /emote smiles, holding up his hands, "The paradox of an intelligence force serving a democracy....very well"
[17:23:24] Mikhail Lukash > Nice isnt it?
[17:23:32] Morwen Lagann > It's not a paradox, Seriphyn.
[17:23:48] Morwen Lagann > It's called operational security.
[17:24:19] Seriphyn Inhonores > If that's what you want to call it...
[17:24:34] Thoun Gaterau > As I said, I suggest you tread very carefully, Inhonores. I'm sure your mother, given her position, would not see an FIO flagged report for insubordination tagged to her son's records in a good light.
[17:25:01] Thoun Gaterau > I suggest you keep your mouth shut, and do your duty as a citizen.
[17:25:44] Seriphyn Inhonores > /emote steeples his hands, hiding the lower half of his face behind them, "Fine..."
[17:25:50] Mikhail Lukash > /emote chuckles > ah diplomacy... i was wondering when hed do that.
[17:25:51] Thoun Gaterau > That will be all.
[17:27:14] Thoun Gaterau > I do see however, that you were involved in combat with several of the vessels in orbit during the engagement that occured. You may be called in for questioning, should the need arise, along with others.
[17:28:01] Seriphyn Inhonores > Well, it'll be a discredit to my uniform to say no...
[17:28:15] Thoun Gaterau > Until your presence is requested, it would be in your best interests not to interfere with FIO operations.
[17:28:20] Seriphyn Inhonores > /emote mentions to Milo, "Well, I might be a capsuleer, but I'm still bound to the laws as a citizen and soldier"
[17:28:42] Seriphyn Inhonores > /emote sits back, "No, I'm just a ready reservist, Gaterau, my.....apologies"
[17:28:53] Scherezad > "I, um, I would be happy to, um, to provide, um, what information I, uh, I have. If needed."
[17:28:54] Mikhail Lukash > I sense tension.

[17:44:37] Seriphyn Inhonores > /emote says quietly, "I don't think he's gone yet..."
[17:45:33] Morwen Lagann > Seriphyn, it's not like you can dig your hole that much deeper. Might as well start clinking against the bedrock.
[17:46:07] Morwen Lagann > It'd be easier than waiting for everyone and anyone who might be inclined to forward things along to him even after he's gone.
[17:46:37] Seriphyn Inhonores > The oath I took was to the Federation's peoples and ideals, not its governments, is all.
[17:46:47] Seriphyn Inhonores > People and ideals are honest...governments, well...a mixed bag.
[17:47:07] Mikhail Lukash > -of shit?
[17:48:35] Seriphyn Inhonores > Right...
[17:49:25] Thoun Gaterau > I'll be sure to include your statement in my report to the Senate, Lieutenant.
[17:50:05] Seriphyn Inhonores > /emote corrects, as politely as he can, "Commander. Lieutenant Commander. I may forward my apologies to the intelligence committee if need be"
[17:53:08] Seriphyn Inhonores > No, I...it was unprofessional of me. Still though, he could 'ave not baited me by referring to my actual rank...
[17:53:48] Scherezad > /emote 's hologram smiles a little at that
[17:54:04] Morwen Lagann > You're the one who bit.

Where is the fascist spook? The actor seemed perfectly in line with a military/intelligence officer's SOP when dealing with people that quite simply don't need to know the details.

It'd be helpfull if you'd modify the thread title to be less inflamatory. It almost made me completely disregard what is in actuality quite an interresting post to read. :psyccp:

I don't find the title inflammatory (being a fan of the hit show 'Spooks') but the term can be, ahem, racist in certain circles. Additionally, any G-men among us may be a bit put off, but personally not too bothered.

Good bit of ar-pees there and I like this low level 'whisperings of the baseline intruding into our sphere of influence' lark, it highlights out detachment and yet dependence on these people behind the scenes.

Death to the fascist spooks!

The throwing around of the word fascist. Oh and the call for the death of a certain group of people.
Aelisha has explained it well enough, so I'll not repeat what she said above.

Ah, see, Ive never heard the term spooks used as a racist term, only as a term for so-called "g-men".

In this particular case the word Fascist to be doesn't seem to be something that would be taken as offensive though?

As a fascist I'm offended by this.
We'll talk about this again in WWIII, promise.

[mod]The mods didn't find a problem with the title. I'm not extremely worried about offending fascists. Please let's get back on topic?[/mod]

With all due respect, I highly doubt, that the word 'fascist' is known throughout New Eden. This word is based on Roman symbolism, that is unknown in game universe.
Moreover, it can't hold negative meaning in New Eden, since it got this negative meaning only after Italy has lost the war.
Instead of word 'fascism' for RP I think 'national corporatism' would be more adequate.

If the names of Norse and Greek mythological figures are still in use in New Eden (as demonstrated by a whole lot of ship names), there's no reason to believe that the concept of fascism should be any more likely to be forgotten. Different cultures in New Eden might have different names for it, but I disagree that the use of the word is in itself problematic. If it were, you could make the almost exact same argument regarding, say, the word "empire".

Although the concept's negative reputation only got firmly cemented as such during or after WW2, the ideology was controversial long before that. That's neither here nor there, though, since EVE is not set in the time before Italy lost the war. Negative associations can reverberate a long, long way down through history.

Also, this is not an IC thread to begin with.

The word "Quisling" Is not known in New Eden either, but it's still in use IC as an auto-translator word for 'Traitor' just like "Judas" would mean the same thing.

Remember always that specific characters speak Amarrian, Caldanese, Gallente, Brutor/Sebeistor, Intaki and so on, but every Capsuleer's available technology translates that to whatever they want.

No-one in EVE speak English.

------------------

As for the subject, I find Seri's aggressive use of 'death to the fascists' in describing the FIO-SDII as somewhat offensive - it adds a trait to a faction In-Game that is not absolutely accurate, especially not regarding the actor's rather level-headed way of dealing with the situation. Freedom of information and speech and so on is tempered by security needs. (The eternal dilemma for Democracies.) Everyone did not need to know what the FIO was doing, and the FIO did not need to be treated like shit for it.

They were, IC. That's cool, that's RP. We don't need to continue that into OOC - it goes to places like 'all Amarrians are slaving assholes IRL' and such pitfalls.

I read the title as being tongue-in-cheek, myself. Why does everything have to be interpreted in the worst possible way?

People read different things differently?

Dunno, perhaps I'm putting to much meaning nto it. Or perhaps Seri was rather careless in his title choice, who knows.

There is one thing I wonder about though, somewhat relevant to the topic.

Seri, your toon, IIRL, was somewhat pro-SDII earlier. Has this seriously changed recently?

Hmm might have to RP with you In-Game to get a proper answer to that question... who knows.

As a not-English speaker, I assure you that fascism is not an English word. But I had a different idea (rather than just defining a word).
It is all good for words like 'traitor', since they already have negative meaning. But negative meaning of word 'fascism' was acquired later and is alien to world of EVE. Being able to 'translate' this word, it would most probably sound as I guessed before: 'national corporatism'. But these words have no such heavy painted negative tint as word like 'fascism'. And the problem comes when a character ICly speaks of 'national corporatism' as he would speak OOCly about fascism, because this single word OOC-ly have much much stronger negative meaning than the whole 'dirty national corporatism bastards', where this idea (as fascism) IMHO should be neutral for EVE residents.
