The Olympic opening ceremony!
« on: 28 Jul 2012, 07:13 »

Anyone watch the fantastic opening ceremony last night? I thought the Chinese would be hard to top, but I'm glad Danny Boyle was going for an all-out celebration of "Britishness"...to celebrating its past as the first industrialized nation (awesome sequence, that), and even managing to get into the digital age and social networking without the corniness one might have assumed from it. It wouldn't be fully British if there were elements that indicated we weren't taking it too seriously, such as Rowan Atkinson playing Mr Bean as the keyboardist for Chariots of Fire and, of course, the Queen and Daniel Craig as James Bond jumping out of a helicopter.

The icing on the cake for me, was the Olympic cauldron. When each of the 200+ nations came out during the parade, they had a teenager/kid carrying a copper petal of some kind. I thought it was some Olympic tradition and had no idea what it was. Turned out, each copper petal topped its own stem (one for each nation of the world), each furled out like a dandelion or some such. Then, the Olympic torches lit one segment, and all the petals subsequently lit up. They then rose and coalesced into one entity as the cauldron itself, representing the various nations coming together for the Olympics. That really was moving for me, personally, that despite the harsh faultlines in the world right now, there's still something to be patriotic about, as a single species; the fact we can still come together despite actively hating and killing each other is really a testament to all of us.

Some of the elements, as this BBC article points out, may have gone over the heads of non-Brits. But as LA Times points out, repeating viewings by folks will reveal some connections as they learn about British history/culture. We're not generally a patriotic people, and it seems all your typical British moaning has subsided into a collective sense of pride. Here's to all athletes earning prestige for their nations, if they're successful!

Apparently the US carrier (NBC) censored* the 7/7 Tribute  :ugh:  Link

Someone in the the media business in the US really needs to fix our Fourth Estate.

It was also time delayed to US Prime Time (includes commercials).   :bash:

*Note: NBC is a privately owned media outlet.  So it was likely self-censorship.     :bash:

For some reason I have always found professional athletics a waste of a good life and a waste of good time watching it.

Well, it was originally envisioned as a purely amateur event.

I watched it  :D Although, as I am currently in New Zealand working very hard on my kiwi accent so people stop giving me funny looks, it meant it started at eight am for me. So I missed the first 45 minutes because I was asleep  >.>

Not keen on the Olympics, or any sporting event at all really. Pomp and ceremony isn't my thing either tbh.

That said...

Quote
Reasons we were awesome:

1. THE QUEEN PARACHUTING OUT OF A HELICOPTER WITH JAMES BOND!
2. We showed a clip of the lesbian kiss from Brookside. To countries in attendance who EXECUTE gay people. FUCK YES. (Danny Boyle is now responsible for the first broadcast of a lesbian kiss on Saudi Arabian state TV!)
3. Kenneth Branagh in a top hat quoting Shakespeare.
4. A witch playing the drums.
5. Top Hat Boy Band!
6. DIZZEE FUCKING RASCAL.
7. Badass music and kissing montage!
8. An army of Mary Poppinses fighting off a GIANT VOLDEMORT to Tubular Bells!
9. 20 minute dance section dedicated to the NHS and children's literature!
10. ROWAN ATKINSON PLAYING CHARIOTS OF FIRE!
11. ANIMATED WAVING CHURCHILL STATUE!
12. Team GB walking out to Bowie's Heroes!
13. The entire parade of countries basically being an exercise in that most British of activities: queueing.
14. Fiji walking out to the Bee Gees with a topless man waving the flag!
15. Spain brought a giant!
16. WE PARACHUTED THE QUEEN INTO THE OLYMPIC STADIUM FOR GOD'S SAKE!
17. Everything going flawlessly then Paul McCartney fucking up the timing of Hey Jude right at the end.
18. The Queen thoroughly not giving a shit during the march.
19. NAAAAH NA NA NA NA NA NAAAAAAAH! NA NA NA NAAAAAAAAAAAH! YAY JEWS!
20. LOOK AT OUR FUCKING CAULDRON BITCHES!

SORRY BEJING, WE WON BY VIRTUE OF BEING COMPLETELY BIZARRE. I HAVE NEVER BEEN MORE PROUD TO BRITISH IN MY ENTIRE LIFE.

I would, but I have quite limited time and am only really here to visit family (haven't seen my cousins or grandparents since 04/5). Next time!

Danny Boyle deserves a knighthood and as much gold as he can eat.

He made something which somehow, through some arcane means, managed to make the British forget their cynicism. Has never happened in my lifetime before  :P

I finagled my way into watching the BBC broadcast live as I (rightly) suspected NBC would butcher the whole thing on their tape delay.

The way NBC kept injecting political points into their commentary irked me.

"The subject of a national health care system has been a point of great division in this country as you know."

and the serious facepalm moment for me was "Quite frankly, none of these children look really sick to me."

Then they chopped a major amount of the parade of nations out while repeatedly commenting with feigned surprise how it was progressing along so rapidly.

"Pakistan...many world leaders casting a wary eye on this nation in the last few years"

Seriously? You can't just tell us who the flag-bearer is and why they received the honor or mention their recent medal placings in the last few games?  Save the geopolitical crap for the 24 hour news networks with their talking heads and policy wonks (I say that being quite wonky, myself mind you).  This event is supposed to be where we set such things aside.

Charlie Booker has referred to the comments as a "Ceaseless, grim list of just how troubled each individual nation is."

Some other gems:

"Soccer is known as football in Great Britain."  Make that basically the entire rest of the world perhaps?

Telling viewers to "google" Tim Berners-Lee because they had never heard of him (irony is delicious in this way, btw).

But I'll let the rest go, because the ceremony itself was too spectacular to let dumb commentary and bad editing overshadow it :9.

I'm a big fan of stagecraft and metaphorical imagery, so the agrarian transformation to industrial revolution sequence blew me away.  The NHS segment was charming and adventurous, kudos to Danny for giving the often unthanked masses of health care workers a place in the spotlight as well as celebrating children's literature.

I wasn't too keen on the pop culture/social media boy-meets-girl story thing, but I guess they had to put together a segment for the younger generations.

The former Olympians graciously giving the honor of the lighting the cauldron to a younger generation was a really powerful final touch.

As an American of the Anglo-Saxon persuasion I have to admit on first reflection thinking, "what the hell", but as I watched it, I grew to love it.  It was corny, confusing, cryptic, and ever so majestic, which I think fairly well describes the British.  WELL DONE!

P.S. Do you think if we apologized for the whole Revolution thing the Queen would take us back :).
