That in Norse mythology, the "Naglfar" was a ship built from the toenail and fingernail clippings of the dead?

Some notable figures:

Drupar Maak, the Starkmanir who took an imperial scepter to kill his owner, thus creating the Khummak and starting the genocide on his tribe.[1]

Karin Midular, head of the Sebiestor tribe, former prime minister, very controversial in her regime because she seemed to be appeasing to the Amarr - some claim she actually was, others say she was just faking this in an attempt to prevent a war the Minmatar could not win, and in reality was supporting all sorts of anti-Amarr activities.[2]

Malaetu Shakor, the former head of the Brutor tribe, strong supporter of war with the Empire during Midular's time, now head of the Republic as the "San Matar".[3]

Karishal Muritor, a former captain 1st class of the Republic Fleet and bearer of the prestigious Drupar's Sun medal, defected from his post, stealing a fleet of ships to found the rebel group "The Defiants" to wage the war against the Amarr that the Republic was trying to avoid. A huge diplomatic incident in its time. He ended up being killed by the Republic in a very controversial way. [4,5,6] (and many others)

Kanth Filmir, a former admiral of the Republic Fleet, close friend of Karishal Muritor, sent to hunt him down and bring him in for a trial for defection of his post and theft of Republic property. Muritor declined to come along and was shot down. This caused an outrage and Filmir resigned from his post.[7]

The Muritor story arc was for me pretty much the best story arc Aurora ever did. It's also a very good explanation of the old RP conflict within the Minmatar faction split into those that think that starting a war now would destroy the Republic, hence tried to avoid diplomatic incidents while keeping on freeing slaves in secret, and those that think we need to strike the Empire, now. I sometimes miss that time, but EA pretty much ended those subtle RP possibilities.

I think it's most an OOC symbol for the Minmatar because of its excellent OOC stats. I wouldn't say it holds as much weight in PF, but I'll dig up the four Rifter hull descriptions for you to compare.

Quote from: Rifter
The Rifter is a very powerful combat frigate and can easily tackle the best frigates out there. It has gone through many radical design phases since its inauguration during the Minmatar Rebellion. The Rifter has a wide variety of offensive capabilities, making it an unpredictable and deadly adversary.
Quote from: Wolf
Named after a mythical beast renowned for its voraciousness, the Wolf is one of the most potentially destructive frigates currently in existence. While hardier than its brother the Jaguar it has less in the way of shield systems, and the capabilities of its onboard computer leave something to be desired. Nevertheless, the mere sight of a locked and loaded Wolf should be enough to make most pilots turn tail and flee.
Quote from: Jaguar
The Jaguar is a versatile ship capable of reaching speeds unmatched by any other assault-class vessel. While comparatively weak on the defensive front it sports great flexibility, allowing pilots considerable latitude in configuring their loadouts for whatever circumstances they find themselves in.
Quote from: Freki
Developed along with the first wave of Minmatar assault ships but later abandoned due to cost, the Freki is known for its extremely well designed warp core that enables it to arrive first on the scene to snare and eliminate its target.
It is rarely seen on the battlefield, as only a limited number have ever gone into production. It is usually given to pilots as a reward for their excellence in combat.

The T2 variants for hulls tend to have a little extra relating the particlar ship with it's developer corporation.

I've expanded on the descriptions Katrina quoted which might help introduce a little bit of RP into it.

Quote from: Jaguar
Developer: Thukker Mix
Being the brain-child of the nomadic Thukkers, it is no surprise the Jaguar is as fast as it is. Initially conceived as a way for the tribe to pack some added punch to their organized detachments, they've found it to be equally useful as messenger, scout and escort, and it is likely to become one of the most commonly-seen ships in the Thukkers' stomping grounds.
Quote from: Wolf
Developer: Boundless Creation
Boundless Creation's ships are based on the Brutor tribe's philosophy of warfare: simply fit as much firepower onto your ship as possible. Defense systems and electronics arrays therefore take a back seat to sheer annihilative potential.

Why would the stats (or its excellent capabilities as a combat frigate) not be IC?

I heard that the Rifter was the first matari ship built entirely using matari designs, without Gallentean engineering help. Its design was based on pre-invasion blueprints that were dug up.
