Scrapheap Challenge db leaked
« on: 11 Apr 2011, 06:13 »

According to some information, the database belonging to the late Scrapheap Challenge forum has leaked, with passwords possibly in plain text. So, if you had an account there, and use the same password in other services (hello e-mail), you might want to change your password.

(Of course, even if this isn't relevant to you, changing passwords once in a while is a good idea.)

SHC, always looking to one-up the official forums.

Wow.

Just....wow.

As someone mentioned on Kugutsumen, phpbb already encrypts passwords by default, so the admin of SHC had to purposely leave them unencrypted to start with, which means they were trying to mine passwords all along.  :ugh:

Welp, good thing I didn't really use my SHC password for anything else.

Is this some RP niche drama or something? From what I've heard it was a cynical place for veterans of EVE to rant in.

When you say "the late scrapheap", has the page just died for now, or is the site permanently kaput?

The best information is possibly available from the EVE Report:

Marvellous.

Some people with longer memories may recall a fundraising exercise to rehost the SHC forums and upgrade them. Much money was collected, then nothing happened. Ever. Calmdown later ragequit his own forums having already secured a job at CCP. You couldn't make stuff like this up.

The main problem I have, in common with many others I suspect, is that I have no idea which password I used on SHC. I registered 5 years ago. The password has largely been cached in browsers since then. Like many people, I have a limited numbers of passwords that I use for Internets stuff, mainly because every fucking site on the Internet wants you to register. I already retain ~50 passwords and PINs for work and other important things, I don't need or want or have the capacity to have to remember passwords for every forum I might want to shitpost on as well.

Anyway, I developed a new method for generating strong, unique yet memorable passwords a while back. This debacle gave me a great excuse to change a bunch of passwords to use this method. Yay?

While SHC was mainly shit, and dominated by a core of uninspired people endlessly repeating 4chan memes at each other, it did have some good points too. It was the de facto alternative to the terrible Eve-O forums and filled that void left by the sudden demise of the EVE-I forums (hands up who remembers those?). Eve really does need a set of general forums (as opposed to the more specialised places like Backstage for example) as an alternative to the official ones, imo. On that basis, it's a shame to see SHC go.

A good deal of people has already migrated to the Failheap Challenge forums, which are almost a carbon copy. Kugutsumen's forums were also somewhat nice to lurk for battle reports for a while, but they have now gone very crap very fast.
