Plz to adopt orphaned RPer :(
« on: 05 Dec 2010, 10:46 »

One of my favourite types of RP in EVE is blog/fiction quality stuff. The ability to literally pull a chatlog, format it correctly, and then market it as a piece of fiction.

However, most of that "roleplayed fiction" is mostly done in RP social groups. EM, VETO, smaller groups, etc. It requires a second person who is also equally interested in creating fiction-quality stuff, however. Two players I have RPed with to this extent; Vieve and JiaLei Lian.

Another issue is that the endless OOC discussions of "what a capsuleer would and wouldn't do" has torn the inspiration from my RP. Seriphyn is a big mighty capsuleer luminaire general rawr rawr, and so, when he's not in space, he's either at home or sat behind a desk. We've all talked about how capsuleers "wouldn't do that" and OOC-thru-IC, you may get ridiculed for saying that you went commando and nuked some unnamed deadspace colony.

I mean, it's a BIG universe. Can easily make up a random deadspace colony (mission agents spawn em all the time) or some very remote island on a planet (planets are equally big places) that you can toy around with. Sure, a capsuleer doesn't have a reason to go lead a squad of marines up those parts, but what's gonna stop them?

Subconciously, this self-conciousness has made me reluctant to play out more generic, "space captain" RP...which is a shame, because a lot of it is awesome if done right, and believably. The alternative is playing more of Seriphyn's SDII identity up...big desk jockeying Luminaire General capsuleer is one giant cover-up for being a Black Eagle paramilitary. Of course, I can't really play this out if there's no one to play with :P

So, I'm looking to see if someone is willing to "adopt" my character into your ongoing storylines or whatever. For me it's all about character driven stuff; yes, on the IGS it's like "Go Fed!" but IC Seri doesn't care that much about the Fed. I mean there is soooo much more in the EVE universe than bars or ships...especially on planets. But the constant, collective community discussion (am not innocent of that) of like "This? No. This? No. This? No." has taken its toll.

It's also because, being a "Fed RPer" externally,  there's no one else really to group up with to write this RP'd fiction. There's only so much fuel of being creative on the IGS before you get fatigued of the naysayers :X

How does Seriphyn feel about the Angel Cartel? Or the RSS? I suspect he's not particularly connected to the cyberwarfare front or research into bleeding-edge cybernetics, but if I'm wrong, please let me know.

I'm more than willing to find a way to RP with you, dude. I don't have much in the way of storylines going right now, to be honest. That just means we get to start fresh...

I think the way I would approach the 'I'mma a General, general wouldn't do this' part would be that being an FW General isn't exactly like being an Army general.

I don't think (correct me if I'm wrong) you play it as meaning that your character has been assigned troops and resources by the Fed (other than the ISK and LP form the FW, ofc). That being the case (assuming it is the case), it is entirely up to you how much the rank defines your character.

Similarly, though perhaps more problematically, there is the 'Capsuleers wouldn't do this' side of things. That is really a question of what you feel your character would and wouldn't do. It isn't always as cut and dry as 'Obviously, my character would never put themselves in any sort of situation like x, because it's beneath them/dangerous/they'd have a security detail/etc.' though. It's a matter of deciding what might motivate your character to do things they might not otherwise.

For example, while the character might take care of something themselves (rather than sending flunkies or having a security detail along) because it was something they can't trust anyone else to know, or witness. Maybe it's just something they don't trust anyone but themselves to not screw up (I've done this a couple times, with Silver, who is normally extremely - even excessively - cautious).

It doesn't always have to make sense, from a more objective point of view. Even if your character could hire someone better for the job, they might want to do it themselves. Maybe they are tired of being cooped up and not allowed to take things into their own hands, so they do - even if it's unwise. Maybe they throw up their hands and tell all their security people to take the day off, they're going to go and have a drink on their own, damnit.

There is nothing stopping your character from doing very nearly whatever they (or you) want, except for your own decisions about how that character thinks - and people are contradictory, confused creatures at the best of times.

There is also when the way things begin is with something happening to your character. That would explain why they might be in an unusual situation.

Like this (Start with Into the Dark 1, Mr. Popular is the last part). That was pretty much all (except for Mr. Popular) done with IG RP converted to fiction.

I got the impression at the time that there was a lot of story being converted to RP in that too (Or was that a different story?)

By which, I mean that it felt like Silver and Ciarente had talked behind the scenes, figured out what needed to happen, and were RPing in public to leave enough traces to say that it really happened to the characters.

Am I mistaken?

As far as ItD, yes.

For ItD pretty much all of it was RPed out with just a little OOC nudge here and there. Now, a lot of it was set up 'off camera' as it were - Cia being kidnapped, etc. But the stuff in Debreth, for example, was pretty much all RP. I played a couple characters, and Cia played a few characters plus DM, I suppose you could say. Debreth being her creation.

Now, there have been times, usually when the idea from the start is to create a piece of fiction, where we've decided to RP some part of it that was already planned out mostly because that's sometimes, at least for me, an easier way to create dialogue or scenes that seem true to the characters (accustomed as I am to RPing them). Usually we'd be doing the story, and go 'oh, why don't we RP this bit out.' For example, Syndicate Files: The Sister was done that way. That's probably the biggest example of one where it went story --> RP bits. I'd say that The Sister probably best fits the description you gave.

Usually I try to RP my characters in public in a way consistent with whatever is going on with them at the time (whether OOC that is based in fiction or RP). They are, ofc, my characters, so whatever I care to say happened to them 'really happened' to them - whatever they might do in public.

(emphasis mine)

... In before requests for John/Seri slashfic.

Joking aside, I do agree and enjoy RP that is the "blog/fiction quality stuff" as well - there's one story on my blog that was taken almost word for word from an MSN chat log.

The only thing stopping me from writing more of these is I seem to have the problem of  having too much RP to keep up with it properly. It's kinda frustrating at times, to be honest - I often want to make a blog post, but I can't because I don't have the time to spare because of schoolwork or other things, or I'm already in the middle of more RP, or... yeah. /o\

Morwen's Law:
1) The number of capsuleer women who are bisexual is greater than the number who are lesbian.
2) Most of the former group appear lesbian due to a lack of suitable male partners to go around.
3) The lack of suitable male partners can be summed up in most cases thusly: interested, worth the air they breathe, available; pick two.

In all honesty Seri, I know we're at eachother's throats constantly on IC terms but there's no extension of that out of character and if you want to collaborate on something any time, I'm more than willing to talk.

Persona Non Grata over here could use a hand with some mutual motivation.

Wow. That sounded dirty.
