Just a short piece I wrote last year about one of Zag's more emo moments in life that I always enjoyed. I'm not sure what drugs I was on when I was writing it though.

--------------

How long have I been here?

The answer eluded him. Chased out by hazy memories and fog-bound illusions. Brief glimmers of lucidity would sometimes visit him like an errant vagabond. A passing merchant crossing the vast sea of sand in his mind. He would barter his dreams with outstretched, shaking hands for but a taste of reality. But not this time. Not this time.

The room was dark. Silent. A single cigarette was burning slowly down in an ashtray on a desk. A chrome plated lighter sat casually beside it. The Federal Eagle emblazoned on its side.

For the Federation. Always for the Federation.

"She's a traitor."

Death.

"There must be a mistake?"

He already knew the answer.

"No mistake. She's a traitor."

Death.

"What are the orders?"

He already knew the answer.

"She's beyond salvage."

Death.

"Who will be the asset in play?"

He already knew the answer.

"You."

Death.

For the Federation. Always for the Federation.

The dreams would always creep up on him. Torment him with illusions.

Mad? Illusion? Dream?

He stood up from his chair.

Illusion or dream?

Had he been sitting? He did not know.

Where am I?

The remnants of revelry cluttered the room. Empty bottles left discarded where they had landed. Dropped by careless hands. Sweat soaked sheets left tangled after the night's passions.

But they could not erase her.

He looked up and closed his eyes.

For the Federation. Always for the Federation.

He loved her.

Death.

She smiled at him.

Death.

His finger was on the trigger.

Death.

She began to speak.

Death.

He pressed the trigger.

For the Federation. Always for the Federation.

He was dressed in the uniform of sin. Commander.

A commander of nothing.

The pistol felt comfortable in his hand.

A tool of catharsis.

The barrel was cool against his skin.

A time for the end of sin.

He opened his eyes.

Redemption.

And pulled the trigger.

For her. Always for her.

Well, I liked it.  8)

I'm a fan of telling a story with an economy on words. Good writing makes that possible, most of the time.
