[Character] Lyn Farel

I think I never actually took the time to create a sheet for my character here on backstage, so... here we are.

On a sidenote this character sheet is purposely made OOC, unlike the one I have on Evelopedia, to rather focus on the character herself than what is known of her. This is supposed to be a collection of the most important things I have developped for Lyn over the years, so, my apologies for the walls of text.

History

Lynara Marya Farel was born on the planet Janus V, located in the Ammatar Mandate, single child of the ammatar overseer matriarch Marya Altarea Farel and an unknown father, which sealed her illegitimacy as a heir of the House. Marya Farel was known in the regional milieu to be a very conservative land owner, even when compared to Ardishapur standards. Although at the head of a once renowned and wealthy minor House, she never actually lived up to witness the fame and glorious days of the House herself. She rose to power at 45 by legacy when her father eventually died at the age of 287, last witness of the family to the Minmatar Rebellion and the exodus of the Nefantar, but the resource that brought power and prosperity to the House, a rare, noxious kind of mineral alloy found and harvested in the mountains of the archipelago, had progressively depleted. It is also speculated that this very toxic alloy, the main source of the impurity of the ground, was at the origin of the death of the former lord.

When her daughter Lynara came to the world, the House finances and wealth was in a dramatic situation and Marya's reputation had almost entirely vanished partly in cause of that, and partly in cause of the various rumors spreading in the regional neighborhood, starting with Lynara's illegitimacy and the unrighteousness of her mother. Marya Farel however seemed mostly interested in clinging to the delusions of the past, and still enjoying the persistent fame surrounding the family, she managed to maintain an illusion in which Lynara Farel grew up and was educated properly, following amarrian standards to the letter. Destined to become the next holder in line despite her illegitimacy – due to her birth of an unknown father – she learned theology, religion, and the usual amarrian protocols, and was said to be very enthusiastic when it came to reading and learning.

Only child of her family, she was raised alone and never left the Farel estate. In reality however, she was raised in an insane entourage of courtiers she saw like scavengers around a mother that more and more people whispered to have lost her last piece of sanity, all unable to acknowledge the derelict state of the House and living to their own delusions. Although never lacking of proper material needs, Lynara lacked in every other field : friends, parents, social relations, love, and care, which she eventually replaced by her books. Said books became her beloved teachers that she started to trust more than her shallow teaching courtiers. Her relations with her mother were extremely limited and poor, as some sources indicate that it could be weeks between two of their meet ups.

Notes: it is believed that the omnipresent degenerative disease that struck everyone working in the nearby vicinity of the mines, and to a lesser degree everyone else in Milvus, was one of the probable causes of Marya Farel's inability to properly bear children, and that her only child Lynara was probably grown in vitro by despair rather than by amarrian or ammatar tradition.

Lynara eventually grew further away from her mother until she reached the age of six. She caught the attention of two traveling scholars for reasons only clear to them, and under both pressure and accesses of dementia, Marya Farel eventually consented to handle Lynara to them, against proper compensation. The two scholars happened to be working for the Society of Conscious Thought, where she spent the next years of her childhood learning. She soon was transferred through a SoCT exchange program to Luminaire, in a boarding school located in proximity of Caille. This eventually leaded her to integrate briefly the University of Caille where she validated a degree years in advance.

Capsuleer History

YC 106 to 108 : Academy

In YC 106, Lynara Farel could have entered one of the Imperial capsuleer academies when her pod compatibility was discovered at the age of seventeen. She favored the Republic Military School, a possible reason for doing so being to avoid any word of her to leak back to her mother in the Mandate, but more probably because she was still tied to the affairs of her master that were tooking place at this time in Republic space, on Pator. At her arrival in the Republic Military School, she chose to shorten her first name 'Lynara' to 'Lyn' in her public records.

It is speculated that the school accepted her in spite of her Ammatar origins due to the prestige and need of capsuleers the Republic was in. Another reason could also have been that they actually believed in reformed defectors from the Mandate, which she could very well have passed for.

The very few words she held about the Republic Military School were extremely negative, where she described her apprenticeship in a place of 'intolerance, pettyness and racial hatred'.

YC 109 to 110 : Fight for Providence

Several months after having been licensed as a capsuleer, Lyn Farel started to run a small intelligence agency, the Ubiqtorat, along with two other Amarr affiliated loyalists. They were noticed for their restless implication in the establishment by CVA of the NRDS policy she is known to believe in, in the region of Providence, and the colonization of said region at the side of the Aegis Militia alliance and their allies. They saw the end of the war against the forces of the Ushra'Khan through Deliverance Reclaimed and the ensuing withdrawal of the latter out of the region.

The agency grew more influential in the local politics by being briefly granted the executorship of the Aegis Militia and acted toward its establishment as a new Holder member of the CVA in the Q-6LG1 constellation. As the time passed, it appeared the agency left the alliance and went dormant for obscure reasons, even if some speculated their goal was accomplished and thus they had no more reasons to exist as an entity in itself.

YC 110 : NRDS enforcement in Solitude

Leaving her service for Amarr Empire loyalists in favor of a Gallente Federation affiliated corporation operating in Solitude, Lyn Farel joined the Takagi Corp as an Amarr loyalist envoy, where she fought against the piracy that was crippling the whole region. She quickly got promoted for her actions as a fleet commander.

It seems she left several months after a severe argument with some of the members of the corporation the 10.16.

A few days after her mother died of an unknown genetic blood disease at her estate on Janus V. Lyn Farel eventually decided to take the succession and became the new head of the Farel House, using her own capsuleer resources to rehabilitate the property.

Notes: Marya Farel eventually died of her genetic disease in YC 111, and Lynara was constrained to take her place despite her position as a capsuleer exile, and her diluted hatred for everything related to Janus V. She then earned a lot of ire from her political and ambitious neighbors and quickly became a very controversial figure in the Mandate. She eventually decided to resign from her status in YC 113.

YC 111 to 113 : The 24th Imperial Crusade

After her delusions in Solitude and her return in imperial space, she joined the 24th Imperial Crusade, and helped found with the help of an old unionist Khanid veteran a corporation dedicated to the defense of the amarrian systems falling into the Militia Emergency Power Act, and promoting a new breed of cyberknight martial arts doctrine to the capsuleer milieu.

The remote headquarters were raided one year later by a group of terrorists from The Bloody Hands of Matar, and the CEO was blamed by a few influent Khanid politicians to have done nothing to prevent the attack. The corporation was closed and its assets seized.

Lyn Farel then joined the Knighthood of the Merciful Crown, a liberal amarrian corporation, where she pushed further her involvement in what she refered to as 'defending the Yulai statu quo' in face of the Minmatar aggression. She also got promoted to Divine Commodore for the years dedicated to her duty.

She eventually left the corporation a few months before its closing, and also abdicated from her noble status under a growing pressure coming from neighboring holdings as well as a dead-end regarding the legitimacy of her House. She entrusted her own holdings to a fellow capsuleer, Nicoletta Mithra, serving sarumite Amarrian Holders.

YC 114 and today

Taking some detachement and thinking on her involvement in a war she always considered as pointless, Lyn Farel eventually got back to her SoCT affiliated roots, and created her own research corporation, Extropian Technologies. The corporation was not aimed at making profit or growing in numbers but rather at developping innovative and cutting-edge technologies, in the lines of the colossal work they achieved by creating the New Eden Infosphere VR in Yulai with the purpose to gather every piece of knowledge collected by humanity to this day.

Lyn Farel recently joined a Society of Conscious Thought affiliated project under the name of Kitzless, adapting the concept of Kitz to capsuleer and acting as a think-tank entity as well as a cutting-edge research institute and science organisation.

Political views

Lyn Farel has always been quite distant of the intergalactic spotlight, especially in her first years as a capsuleer, maybe acting in her own way to defend the ideals she believes in. She has never stated clearly what are her precise political beliefs but she is undoubtedly very liberal compared to amarrian standards, as well as progressive and open-minded. She strives for science and progress through galactic stability and synergy, explained by her deep respect for CONCORD and the Yulai convention as well as famous figures such as emperor Heideran VII, president Aidonis Elabon, or even prime minister Karin Midular.

It is also noticeable as a new full fledged noble, she decided in the early days of YC 113 to release the major part of the slaves that were still under the control of her House, and then to buy all the ones that had been sold to refund the old debts gathered in the last decades, to finally set the slaves free. She entrusted the fate of some of them to another capsuleer and republic loyalist, Sakura Imoru. Her very loose and liberal managing methods as the house head were frowned upon by many Ammatar neighbors, but it seems that the few remaining personnel of the old Farel House still hold her in high esteem compared to her mother.

Politically, she remains to this day a controversial figure in the Mandate, where she embodies empathy, naivety, avant-gardisme, refreshing views, liberalism or universalism, anti conformism, or apostasy, all of this together added to her capsuleer status. Somehow, the people attached to her shy public figure are for most of them the ones craving for change and progress. Though she has never stated as such and even acknowledges the help he brought to the Mandate, she holds no love for the Ardishapur heir, or the Ardishapur family in general, which eventually makes the Mandate stronger, but even more isolated to the rest of the cluster in her opinion, and only serves to make their docility and lethargy even worse, removing every responsibilities they held before.

Her core beliefs however, for which she is extremely secretive about, revolves around her own ideas of a radical transhumanism through social and technological advance, though she refuses to acknowledge the haste of some transhumanist capsuleers that would like to put the cart before the horse. Eventually, posthumanism will have to define itself and through beliefs that she would call "ascentionist", she believes in layers of higher states of being eventually leading to the craved Absolute Truth. The discovery of the Sleepers also caused her a huge excitement and a tangential proof of her beliefs. As a general rule, she tends to adopt some SoCT manners that consist in a responsible approach on technology and knowledge, which contrast a lot with Sanctuary methods that the SoCT often finds reckless and inconsiderate.

Physical Assessment

Lynara is considered somewhat small and slender compared to average. She appears to be very frail and subject to cycling temporary physical weakness that might be caused by the same disease that afflicted her mother and eventually lead her to her death in YC111. Being a capsuleer actually allows her access to alternative ways that were barred to her mother, such as cloning as well as blood and immune rejuvenation. This however makes her very poor at any physical task.

Her pale complexion is a legacy of her Nefantar bloodline, as well as the mixed blood of her father with no clear origin, in spite of her childhood spent on a very warm and sunny oceanic world. This is mostly explained by her aristocratic status which allowed her to spend her early life sheltered in the family estate, in contrast to the local commoners.

Lynara also makes an extensive use of most implant technologies and nanotechnologies - capsuleer or not - and is not ashamed to resort to soft cloning or various other cloning methods, even if she never actually had to soft-clone in her entire life.

She is often wearing casual and loose clothes, and seen disheveled most of the time, which denotes a certain detachment from any fashion sense, even in the corporations where she had to wear some kind of uniform. Some would say that she may well be totally hopeless in that particular matter.

Due to her education, her manners are usually very delicate, polite and aristocratic.

Personality and Traits

Lyn Farel has always proved to be a very enigmatic, hard to reach and reclusive capsuleer. She never speaks nor shows herself to her crews, and is most of the time relayed by intermediaries. Albeit present on the IGS - probably driven by her curiosity - she seems to flee most public apparitions.

It is often hard to get details on her life, but most of what she has shown hints at a very academic personality, with a never ending interest for the most obscure of trivialities, or archaeological prospects.

Nobody ever really understood what makes the people hiring her crew hiring some people and not other. For her crew she remains a plain mystery they never even see, and even less, speak to. Since she tries to avoid social contact at all costs, is agoraphobic, and a lone soul, and despite her apparent indifference actually fears what people may think of her or see of her, then being the social misfit she is, she actively tries to hide from every eye, especially the eyes of strangers that roam in the entrails of her own ships. Which even seems more paradoxical since if she avoids them at all costs, they get even more foreign than they already are, and make them all the more wary.

But all of this combined means that she unconsciously has created a whole aura of mystery around her persona, and baseliners, and even a lot of capsuleers only know of her what they see on the IGS, and do not even have anything else than her holo ID. That may actually be one of the factors attracting people to work for her in the first place, as weird as it may sound. They seem to work better for the ideal they make of her rather than what she really is. Somehow, her behavior, originally almost denying what her demi-god status means, has actually completely made it more real in the eyes of a lot of baseliners. She has become a demi god very hard to get a glimpse of, which is what most gods are often about anyway, some might say with a lot of irony.

[OOC spoilers - psychological analysis of the character concept]

Somewhat responding to a bookworm archetype - and definitely of a certain nerdy breed - Lynara has always suffered from a sheltered childhood and thus is subject to strong antisocial tendencies and a noticeable character introversion. Most social interactions often end up in awkward moments and the very fear of being embarrassed is paradoxically enhancing that trend. She certainly does not lack of determination however, and this can often explain why she is more at ease through Galnet medias than in flesh.

Her usual way to flee from this issue is to crawl back into her own universe, often consisting of books and nerdy and very obscure subjects. Thanks to the HyCon program of the SoCT, her innate and consuming curiosity has been increased by a factor of ten, while her social deficiencies have been turned into a strong - and sometimes cold - detachement that is not easily broken. Her childish benevolence and naivety have slowly turned into something more wicked, steered by a rigid and unreachable strong ethos for knowledge at the command of the Society. Her harmless appearance out of pod combined with her social flaws have often actually played a key part in the influential work she has consciously or unconsciously forged in her path.

Lyn multiple faceted personality can be described as an onion : her most external manners and behaviour form an external layer of daintiness and elegant formalism, a weird mix between amarrian and SoCT, where formalities, respect and civility are tantamount. The deeper one gets however, layer after layer, one can start to see piercing her true persona.

More importantly, that simple fact meant that she replaced that family by books and knowledge, and so looked up to those books to teach her what nobody could : who she is, and what purpose she could have in life. Lyn biggest struggle is with life itself that she seems to see through someone else's eyes, as a in dream. She has a hard time believing in herself, and she deeply hates herself for not knowing what she wants in life, and what she is designed to do. HyCon molded her like a sheet of carbon paper that will take the form of anything that she will meet, or touch. She is an bottomless sponge when it comes to learning, and that also makes her highly suggestible: she seems to naturally base her actions, manners and ideas on others. It is no secret that once in the capsuleer milieu,  as a perfectly blank carbon sheet of paper, joining the Provibloc molded her in a staunch pro CONCORD, pro NRDS believer. She continuously adopted various views, as much amarr than gallente that way. And she will continue to adapt to her environment the same way. She is very comparable to a lost leave flying into the breeze and flowing at the whims of the wind, until she someday maybe eventually finds a true purpose.

More precisely, Lyn's life and struggle is based entirely around the quest for herself. She got messed up in her childhood, first by her family, and after that by HyCon, and now adrift, she flails and kicks in the dark to find a grip to her apparent meaningless life. It is only recently that she got her first, true friends, first in KotMC, and eventually noticed that they are a part of herself that can not be shut down again. Even if she is persuaded that having friends is the best way to hurt herself, she has recently started to look for them, although those can be counted on the fingers of a single hand considering how difficult it is to reach to her true self.

As a player, I like Lyn. She confuses me at times, but I like her.

As a character, Malcolm has a mix of bitter frustration and mild resentment toward her. (Heh)

I like the bio, it explains a LOT about her.

Thanks for the answers.

Lyn usually really likes Natalcya. Some other Nation loyalists like Tiberious are far too much propagandists to her taste, and she usually does not really believes in Nation proper, but in a detached and twisted way she actually hides the core interest she keeps on them under a cold distrust and a disagreement with their new methods. And that's not only because of Sansha technology, which is propably the tech that could interest the SoCT the most.

Well, I noticed for Malcolm :p. It is obvious that she holds more or less the same feelings towards him, which mostly comes from a radically different view and approach on things. People like Malcolm are very alien to her, and tend to represent what "normal" people are, and she has been consciously or unconsciously taught by life and circumstances that "normal" people are dangerous and not to be trusted. Something that I have not mentionned here but that view has been enhanced a lot when she had to frequent Caille and the Republic Military School, where almost everyone was immediately tagged in her mind as a bully.

Eventually I have rarely revealed OOC info like this but since I do not play in the sikrit stuff anymore and after more than 6 years I think it was more harming the character developpement than anything else to keep it quiet OOCly. Maybe I did a mistake, maybe not vOv

The main idea, however, is still to cling to the grim side of Eve. Tbh, I find Lyn to be a pitiful creature, who is only a puppet of a lot of things.

I just remade a global redesign, update, and added spoiler tags at the end, because it touches the true core of the character and nobody is supposed to know that... yet?
