Stolen idea from Kyber, throwing it out here for discussion. I’ll throw out some of my own thoughts.
When your corp is doing something, how do you get other people involved in a believable fashion?
I have a bit of interest in this just because my characters have spent a good bit of their existance doing Stuff™ that people would frown upon, but doing it in secret rather than blabbing about it publicly. Obvious Result: cool stories that could be sooooo much cooler if someone were involved that didn't live inside my head.
As for stories, hm, hm. TS-F is rather insular as a product of its (IC) history, but there have been some great moments. Messing around in backwater Gallente low-security and later Minmatar FW space had some excellent opportunities for internal RP, and I often found it unfortunate that it was difficult to get other corporations involved "realistically", i.e. avoiding sudden catastrophic failures in secrecy or remarkable incidences of OOC-orchestrated IC providence.
Is there a thread on that theme of getting one corporation entwined in the machinations of another -- and if not, would there be any interest therein?
For something ongoing and not terribly secret, this is fairly simple. For example, Anshar has been producing and selling boosters for a good while, anyone in the Intaki region who might care knows about it. I’m sure that Milo & Co. wouldn’t mind if that provoked a bit of conflict as interested parties try to stop them (or muscle in on the business).
But what about something that’s ostensibly meant to be secret? In theory, any time you’re doing something illegal or which would attract significant opposition (like TS-F running operations in Minnie space) your characters are going to want to keep this quiet. But the fun in RP is in the conflict and the stories that are spawned from it – which requires that someone know that you’re up to no good. I think this might be some of the purpose behind this thread, to let people know that something is going on and leave it up to them to find out what.
[I know this has come up before, I believe I’m simply failing at forum-fu to find the old discussions. ]
Different ways this can be done –
“OOC-orchestrated IC providence” as Kyber put it. Sorting it out ahead of time so that someone shows up at exactly the right time and place to stop your nefarious scheme! Can be fun, but kinda puts a hurt on believability. In previous discussions, plenty of people have said they really don’t like this style.
PnP style RP – like Ken’s example of the hacking and corporate bombing, perhaps it would be possible to run something like this as an explanation for why you adversary knows what you’re up to in the first place. Then it doesn’t seem like quite as much of a stretch for them to show up in space to stop you, and it can be a lot of fun if you like that sorta thing.
And my brain just farted coming up with other options. I know there’s a happy middle ground somewhere, what do you all think?
