Anybody here play this? I've been considering getting into it. I understand it's one of the few games more complex (and darker!) than EVE.

The interface is also more gratingly painful and confusing than EVE. (Yes, it's possible.) Initially, anyway. After a while, you just see blonde, brunette, redhead..

It is nice. I'm having a DF binge whenever a new version releases.
If you're not afraid of reading a lot in the df wiki until you get a grip on the game - go ahead, it's one of a kind. ;)

Aside from the horribly confusing interface, it's actually an incredibly fun game.

I've been told the interface is part of the charm, though, so vOv

I like the implications of Gallentians being punched in the face by walking up to a Minmatar as they so freely use another person's culture as a fad.

What's your favorite tileset, people?

I got the Ironhand graphics set but can't figure out how to install it. And since I'm running under Linux, I can't just use the bundled version with it.

Will attack all this again tonight or this weekend.

Ok, so I decided to see if I could learn this. I'm using the Phoebus tileset (because, seriously, I hate ASCII), and I'm on my second fortress with it. I abandoned my first fort once I learned the ropes.

So...how are things going? Well, I have 30-40 dwarves, and most of them are ecstatically happy. That's the good side. The bad sides...well, I decided - after getting hit by child-napper after child-napper - to completely seal my base from the surface. (I have iron and plenty of wood by this point.) So, about 10-20 minutes after I do that, a Goblin army shows up. Ok, good timing, I think. Then a forgotten beast shows up, and it's made of fire. He immediately burns down almost every tree left outside. Then he burns up the Goblin army. I'm afraid to go out.

Then my dwarves started getting really thirsty, because for some reason my "repeat task" on the stills canceled. So I opened up access to an underground reservoir, and then accidentally trapped most of my dwarves in the mud. :s Fortunately, I got to them in time. Oh, and I'm pretty sure there's a vampire somewhere in my fort.

And yet, my dwarves are still ecstatically happy. My theory is that the fungus growing on the floor of my fort is drugging them. Or maybe its my penchant for statues and tons of food. In any case, we cannot get out, so we're going deeper.

I've never been able to get into DF, but I recommend that everyone who hasn't read the saga of Boatmurdered. I was crying with laughter for a good hour the first time I read it.

After reading a good portion of that site I am now going to get this game.
