State of Affairs
« on: 18 Jun 2012, 17:16 »

State of Affairs is an ostensibly impartial news broadcast available in media markets throughout the Caldari State.  It first aired in YC98 in Okkelen when the program was still an in-house production at Nugoeihuvi.  The program enjoyed success locally among market-watchers and middle income corporate households, but was unable to compete against more sensationalized programing.  Echelon Entertainment bought the rights to State of Affairs in YC107, and the show brought in new anchors and writers to help expand its appeal.  Critics are quick to point out that the program's new format, using human anchors to deliver a series of centerpiece stories while surrounded by hyperlinked market and headline tickers, helped draw ratings but came at the expense of maximum data volume delivered per minute.

Following the rise of Provist revolutionary Tibus Heth, State of Affairs has undergone several changes in production staff.  Anchor Tyko Sitsui-Toba joined the program in YC111 following the retirement of Hinna Okkolan, who had been with the show since its Nugoeihuvi days.  Sitsui-Toba is frequently portrayed as the Patriot voice of the lead anchor team, contrasting his supposedly Liberal counterpart, Oraana Nejomari.  As of YC114, State of Affairs is a standard twice-daily twenty minute interactive broadcast delivered by the anchors with submissions from field reporters.  It covers the major news of the Caldari State, focusing on political and market headlines.  This is followed by a ten minute round of special guest interviews and ten minute round of panel debate.  Advertisements run concurrently in subliminal or socketed formats based on the viewers preference.

And, of course, the reporting is always fair and balanced.

Typical advertisement for State of Affairs seen on Echelon networks

What were the other news broadcasts in the State? "This is the State" is Echelon's Patriot one and "Games of State" is Nugoeihuvi's Practical one? (Reppola did visit Games of State quite a few times before being selected as CEO.)

Woo, more Ken worldbuilding stuff \o/ Nice to get material from you again.

What's the motivation for 'fair and balanced' reporting, btw? I've always seen State media as being in line with China's Xinhua or something. Perhaps the audience are high-ranking executives who require to be a little more astute than the 'typically indoctrinated' Caldari?

"Fair and Balanced" is a reference to the hilariously bullshit motto of Fox News here in the US.

I beg your pardon?

"Fair and Balanced" is a reference to the reputation of honest reporting for which the State of Affairs news team is known.  Their experienced journalists and expert contributors recognize that there is usually more than one side to a story and you can trust that you'll hear all angles when you keep your screens set to Echelon Entertainment.  Unlike the shows on those other networks, State of Affairs tells the story straight and let's you decide.
Or rather it's exactly what Stecker said.   :)  It's empty spin.  Note who awarded the program for its excellence in journalism...   I guess I didn't think about the specific reference and its connotations being local to America.
Megacorporate reporting is always fair, balanced and objective. Even when they sometimes contradict each other is just another opportunity to discuss the true, "Facts" of an issue.

Behind closed doors of course. *coughs*

Nice stuff :)
