SpaceX Launch 0744 EVT
« on: 22 May 2012, 00:28 »

For those willing to take a few minutes out of their day to maybe watch a rocket launch, SpaceX will be attempting to launch at 0744 GMT today.

For those of us in the US it is in the wee hours of the morning.

http://www.spacex.com/webcast/

or

http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/index.html

If all goes well the spacecraft should rendevous and be berthed to the US Segment of Station close to the end of the week.  As well as being able to deliver cargo, it is designed to return cargo as well.  The return of cargo has been a challenge since the Shuttles were retired last summer.  Soyuz is the only vehicle that can return and it has limited room after you put the crew inside.

Watched it from when the feed went live to until the feed died.

Harbinger of a new era, for better and for worse.

I like the implications of Gallentians being punched in the face by walking up to a Minmatar as they so freely use another person's culture as a fad.

Successful launch, separation of Dragon, and deployment of the Solar Array.

Throughout the week, the spacecraft will be going through some trials before approaching the station and towards the end of the week may berth with ISS.

I'm a bit suspicious, as it were, of "religious experiences", or other forms of "transcendence". But I can't help but feel, whenever I see a satellite lift off, or a manned mission, that this is what humanity should be doing, this is what our potential is. Not merely to fly and be free from the wars and conflicts of earth, but to quite literally leave the cradle, the first baby steps of a future not bound to a very unstable planet on which we live, as it were, on the edge of a knife.

I don't think that there is any "for worse" in this. For all our faults, all our foibles, this is something that we should and could unite around. It's the very best of what we are: the curiosity, the inventiveness, the desire to explore and the willingness to risk all in pursuit of knowledge. This is the highest of our being made manifest in physical actions, liberated from superstition and ignorance, chaos and fear. Imperfect, as all such things are, but also more perfect than that which has come before.

I will say it, as it must be said: Dex, you are part of the vast machinery, the people behind the lights, who make these triumphs possible, and as such, I think we owe you and all the others like you, a debt of gratitude.

The video is still there atm, you can time shift it.   8)

Oh, look at their video collection btw, they have a concept for all stages to touchdown back to earth.     Rather ambitious but cool if it can be pulled off.

dontcrastdontcrashcontcrashpleasedontyoufuckingcrashme <-Returning astronaut's prayer?

You know, when they retired the shuttles I got the feeling of "welp, why don't we just launch all the nukes right now, cancel the long, agonizing wait for extinction, eh?" and felt like it was going downhill. It's good to know we might still have folks that care to move us on.

Not because we can, or should. We have to. The sooner the better. Of all the different ways we can end, this planet, or solar-system even, will not last forever.

If nothing else, remember; The sun was born, so it must die.

We don't want to all be here when it does.

In typically British fashion, my first reaction to this as someone who advocates "moar space stuff" is thus:

"About bloody time"
