The non-random music thread
« on: 24 Apr 2010, 21:56 »

Okay, so random playlists are fun, but they don't cover all the bases musically.

What I want to know is, what band do you love but no one has ever heard of? It could be a regional band that is just getting going or someone more "established" who you are still trying to turn people on to.

For me, it's The Gaslights. The lead vocalist and the lead guitarist are a husband and wife duo and they pretty much kick ass. I've known the guitarist for more than a decade and he is all round good guy. I've followed him through four different bands, been to tons of shows, traveled with him in a drafty Ford Econoline van, slept on his spare bed when I was too drunk to drive home after a show...

Anyway, check out his stuff here:

I've fairly varied musical tastes, but I love those American singer-songwriters in the tradition of Woody and Arlo Guthrie and Bob Dylan. Currently I'm on a Tom Waits kick. Good examples of what he does with that unique voice:

Chocolate Jesus (this seriously blew me away)
Big in Japan (the audio's not broken, just has a few seconds of silence at the beginning)
The Piano Has Been Drinking (forward thru the terrible camp at the beginning)

...I would say Laibach, but really it's only in the US no one has heard of them.

I've listened to them since 1998, and you are the first person I've come across who's heard of them - perhaps not as widely known as one might think.

I don't go much to concerts but Laibach in Gothenburg sometime in the 90's was probably the best I've been to.  :D

Best group all time, that maybe isn't that unknown but most people only know the name and many (at least in Sweden) have the crazy association that they would somehow represent nazi-ideology , Skinny Puppy.

Again, I'm not sure how known The Chameleons are/were in UK for example but in my experience they are far less known than what they deserve.

...who in their right mind would think Skinny Puppy is a bunch of Nazi idealists?

Next they're going to say that Trent Reznor is a satani---what they already do? Crap.

The 'Across the Universe' Soundtrack - awesome remakes of Beatles songs:

Examples:

I want you (she's so heavy)

Come together

Strawberry fields forever

I am the walrus

Happiness is a warm gun

Known Laibach for years.

Closest I've got to an unknown favourite is probably The Birthday Massacre, but most Canadians will probably laugh at me classing them obscure as they've got a lot bigger since I started listening to them. Still relatively unknown over here though.

Lamb also make exquisite sounds.

One lesser known that I came across was 'Dam', a Palestinian hiphop group. They rap in both Hebrew and Arabic, good for listening if you like rap with a strong meaningful message. Some sample songs (vids include subtitles);

Dam - Born here (Hebrew/Arabic)

Dam - Innocent Criminals (Hebrew)

Dam-G'areeb Fi Bladi (Stranger in My Own Country )(Arabic)

Dam - Meen Erhabe? (Who's the terrorist?)(Arabic)
