Multiple Characters on IGS
« on: 27 Sep 2011, 02:00 »

So, am I blowing it (provided that I'm not blowing it in general) by playing more than one character on IGS? I can't seem to settle on a main! But I don't have the RP-skills enough to come across as different in my characters, I think. And now I'm bringing a third character up that I'm starting to think of as main.

Does this bug people? I'll try to pull back and settle into one character if that's better.

Any other advice you can give the ol' Qansh, I'd be happy to hear it.

It's against forum rules to tell you that your RP is wrong! ;-)

IMHO, multiple characters are fine if they really are multiple, different characters.

Having an alt just cheering your main along (or similar self-reinforcing cycles) feels "meh". This includes having a heated discussion with your alt to keep your thread on the top of the forum.

Thin line. And of course, in the end, it's up to you. :-)

Using alts as sock puppets to support your cause is considered a bad thing, mmkay?
Using alts as sock puppets to criticize your enemies so your main can go about its business without repercussions is a bad thing, mmkay?

I think the consensus that all other ways of using your alts is a-okay on IGS.

Of course there are people that think you are one of the worms of the earth for using alts in the first place, but they are bittervets and usually have left the game, or RP, because they have gotten sick and tired of CCP and the dramallamaing of the RP community.

Hmm, see, that's kind of difficult for me and suggests that I'd better try to keep to one character. Here's why. All my characters, from their different angles and cultures, share the same cause! It's what unites them (well, other than me).

But... maybe that's okay because it's so general. So long as I keep any specific goals, desires, or confrontations separate, so that I don't just have a chorus of "yes men" on specific topics, then I guess I'm okay.

This really is me just trying to figure out who my main is, though it might be weird for people to see me "trying on different clothes" in public.

I like that.

I have a simple rule of never posting with more than one of my characters in a single thread, even when my characters might have had different opinions about the topic. As such it is entirely an OOC ruling but better to be safe than sorry. It proberly helps that all of my characters have distinct interests and often opposite views.

Only in special circumstances have it been needed to break that rule.

I dont mind much if people use alts. It might get annoying for the cases explaned above by Lallara or Arkady, but what annoys me most are disposable alts that are consciously put in the direct opposite faction of the main, and are used to actually ridiculize/caricature or being weirdos/retards to discredit or dirty the opposing faction, then using their mains to say "SEE ! THEY ARE ALL MONSTERS/RETARDS/MORONS (<- pick your choice) !".

I think Myyona says it best.  It's probably a good idea to just post as one of your characters as opposed to all of them.

Pretty much the way I deal with having three or four (or was it six? better take off my mittens and count) distinct characters with different goals and interests. Only in instances where a subject would absolutely get a response out of more than one would I do so, and make sure that they aren't working together or against each other.

My opinion? The only thing that really matters is whether multiple characters in the channel really adds something of interest to a channel. If you're trying to run an event using multiple characters, then do it.

Thanks for the advice, folks. I think (also from a recent post of mine) that I'm too one-note to try to make it work with alternate characters. Sometimes it can work, like when I brought Jascira in all crying about something (oh, you didn't know that we were buddies? ;) ) and it worked. It worked because I had some singular emotions invested in it based on an in-game experience. My Qansh-ifying, speechifying aspect probably best stays with Qansh. It's too... cold and strategic-like to bring somebody else in just because it might look slightly better or be a bit more logical. Anybody else sense this? If I were a real role-player, I'd come in acting up a storm from some entertaining emotional angle. I'll tell you what I'd really love, to be able to say that I'm "Seven of Qansh", "Three of Qansh", and so on, and just be myself, because that's who I'm "playing" basically.

Anyway, thanks again. I'll give Jascira a break (she's off working on her whatever-it-is anyway).

Pretty much this.

The exception to the sock puppet thing would be where there's an IC link between the characters, and everyone IC'ly knows that there's an IC link.

For example I had to use an alt to attend Doriam's coronation as Rodj was banned because of his sec status.   I still keep the alt around to describe what happened but it's public knowledge that Rodj and Reil are cousins.

And Archbishop has used a few alts for various things over the years, but everyone knows who they are so it doesn't cause too many problems because they're flagged as business associates of his and are also broadly pro-Amarrian.   Note that his original main was a Caldari industrialist, but he's generally avoided using one to back up the other on the IGS.

The problems happen when someone creates a "neutral" character in secret and proceeds to use that character to back up their main.

It is worth noting that how your characters interact, if at all, is a large part of how people will percieve your actions. More specifically, if your characters have little or nothing in common, don't respond to each other, and don't make threads about each other... well, honestly, I don't think anyone's going to have an issue with that, really. You're playing two characters, big deal. It's when your second character seems to exist for the sole purpose of enhancing or contrasting your main that people begin to mutter behind your back.

ok.. so...

i have been guilty of this in the past myself.
each of my characters has a defined personality, and sometimes i'll choose to answer with a different one, just because i feel it would 'sound' better comming from them.

however, if all of your characters are basically the same, it can come across as a bad thing... (ref: Stalingrad6) unless you have an IC reason why they would be the same. (ref: Nikiruu)

imho there is no right or wrong here, it all comes down to implementation. sometimes it will work, other times, not so much.
