Cancer will not be 'cured'.

Cancer will become finally, completely, 'treatable'.

Name the last disease we cured. It pretty hard.
We do not do that anymore.

Too many billions a year are made off of cancer. If I cured it tomorrow, I would be dead by Thursday.

Pharma companies do indeed research treatments rather than cures, but big-profile diseases get a lot of charitable and government funded research for cures. Particularly from governments who have publicly-funded healthcare ;)

That said I don't expect cancer to ever be eliminated until/unless we genetically modify ourselves to remove all error from our mechanisms of cellular division. Errors which evolved to be there in order to facilitate the evolutionary process.

I like the implications of Gallentians being punched in the face by walking up to a Minmatar as they so freely use another person's culture as a fad.

There's another that may well be gone 'soon', though: Dracunculiasis or guinea worm disease - http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dracunculiasis.

I do like the idea of solid, thoughtful work getting rid of miserable and decidedly un-sexy diseases.

(Also, by the way, nice choice of projects by one of the US's retired presidents: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carter_Center, subheading "Health programs".)
