Yes, I know it probably wasn't all that much fun if you got your boot.ini overwritten, but then it's also probably not all that much fun to get your country invaded for reasons that turn out to be bogus. In either case, I'm sitting far enough away to be amused.

Really? REALLY? boot.ini == Iraq war? Are you fucking serious? Although, on some perverse level, there are similarities, both are results of :vision:, groupthink and just mind-boggling incompetence. Which is sort of ironic, because I during the runup to Iraq war screaming about how fucking stupid it is, and people were just like you: "hurr durr war is good for business". Besides, those responsible for Iraq are now disgraced, while I bet boot.ini people are still at CCP, judging by the quality of the latest patch.

And as for you-- you think you can do better? You think you can put together a team that can do better? I invite you to try. Make something better than Eve, "Eve as it should have been," and I might just come play it.

Seriously? This is the best you can do? "It's easy to criticize, why don't you do it yourself?". So, continuing your analogy, if I was against Iraq war, should I have invaded some other country, just to show how's it's done?

So I go to look at this DUST thread and find the same forum-destroying crap I see everywhere else on the internet.

Seriously, why?

Way to go, douche.

Eh. He's just angry, and a bit self-righteous. And maybe having a little trouble understanding how anyone intelligent and sane could disagree. I can relate. Been there, lost a few arguments, left again.

Really? REALLY? boot.ini == Iraq war? Are you fucking serious? Although, on some perverse level, there are similarities, both are results of :vision:, groupthink and just mind-boggling incompetence.

Bingo. ... Though I'm sad to say, the Iraq war doesn't seem to have been incompetence so much as a very strange kind of failure. If you read Bob Woodward's book on the subject (can't even remember the name offhand), it looks disturbingly as though the war happened as a result of a peculiar progression in which planning the war turned into actually going to war. As in, "If we're going to stick to our planned timetable for a possible war, we need to do X now." X is done. And so it goes, all the way up to boots on the ground.

Bush himself was a deer in the headlights of history. Yes, I mean he was incompetent. However, he was surrounded with a pack of extremely intelligent, if blindly ideological, people, making this a good example of smart people doing dumb things.

(Mind you, some of the people around him were not so sharp. See, e.g., "Heck of a Job" Brownie. This is why I don't care to be governed by people who see no useful role for government: they tend make government into what they think government is.)

As for the "boot.ini," that one's more typical, in the sense that someone probably just decided that naming a certain file "boot.ini" would be harmless, failing to take good ol' Murphy into account, and nobody else spotted the error. None of the testing computers are set up in the particular way that gave rise to the bug, so it just doesn't get caught, and ZANGO! ... Fiasco city.

Watch people closely enough for long enough with a compassionate eye and it's hard not to develop the impression that humanity is a tragicomic species. Both the boot.ini matter and the Iraq war are examples of human failing where somebody's mistake gives rise to a bizarre result with unpleasant consequences for many.

No, the "best I can do" is in the bits, above and, uh, further above, that you didn't try to respond to. And yes, the "it's easy to criticize" bit is largely the point. Or, to put it differently, you appear positive that you're right and they're wrong, despite just how much better their position is for judging their own circumstances. You are putting your judgment before theirs, declaring them "incompetent."

So if you know enough to say that, you should know enough to do a better job, or at least find someone who will, no?

It's a cheap shot, perhaps, but I don't think I'm being unfair. You are judging CCP's management very harshly on the basis of your own outside perceptions, despite your poor position for doing so. Is it, then, really unfair for me to suggest that you try acting on that apparently-superior judgment, and see just how smoothly it goes?

Well, if I had really intended that to be an analogy, as opposed to another example of clever people (and I'm talking about Colin Powell, Condoleezza Rice, et al,  not "Hi there, I'm the appealing figurehead!" W. himself) making dumb mistakes, you would "invade some other country" by replicating the boot.ini issue. So let's not go there.

Though perhaps invading somebody on the basis of solid intel would be an analogy for avoiding the issue. I could see that.

[mod]Inappropriate flaming. Go to the EVE General Discussion forum if you want to post like that, but Backstage is most emphatically not the place for this sort of arguing. Also, please do not respond to posts that break the rules. Just report them and we will take the appropriate action.[/mod]
