History : Born in the relatively quiet star system of Abagawa to business mogul and ex-State Navy officer, Leivan Surkousa, Valerian quickly learned the best in discipline and education. From an early age he started learning the mechanics of big business from his father. When Valerian was thirteen, Leivan was killed in a "freak" accident (rumors on Abagawa IV had it that he was assasinated by the ruthless SuVee corporation). The family business took a hit, but managed to stay afloat and flourish.
A couple years later, his mother remarried to Saulo Illastier, a Gallentean who was an officer in the Federation Navy. Saulo was an open-minded, kind-hearted man who took Valerian in under his wings and taught him a lot about tolerance; Valerian grew to be very close to Saulo in just a few short years. When Valerian turned eighteen Saulo enlisted him into the State Navy. In just four years Valerian managed to work his way into the position of lieutenant colonel, an uncommon feat.
State Navy admirals soon assigned Valerian his own Raven-class battleship. Corrupt navy officials were well aware of Valerian's step-father being a Gallentean officer, and so when Saulo's Megathron was spotted near State low-security space, they assigned Valerian the task of blowing it and it's escort to pieces. Valerian, of course, wasn't informed of this fact, and his Raven's communications systems were tampered with before he undocked so that no inbound transmissions could be received. The young lieutenant colonel performed his orders flawlessly and quickly. It wasn't until he had salvage crews sift through the Megathron's wreck that he recovered a dogtag with the words "Captain Saulo Illastier" inscribed on it. When Valerian docked back in station, he packed all his belongings and took a charter back to Abagawa IV - he quit the navy.
Running his family business in relative solitude is all Valerian did for a few years after he killed his beloved step-father. He was furious and felt betrayed by the State for what they made him do. His brain was hardwired into serving the State, however, and soon he pardoned any sort of betrayal that had occurred. He no longer considered himself part of the Patriotic power bloc though, but rather part of the Liberal power bloc that pushed for peace between the Federation and the State.
Valerian continued building his family's business on Abagawa IV for several years. Soon he enrolled in the School of Applied Knowledge to begin his training on becoming a capsuleer. After about six years, he graduated and can now be commonly seen flying around the Citadel region. Early in YC 113, Valerian sold off his family's planetside business of Surkousa Industries to the Ishuk-Raata Enforcement Directive in an auction.
Since then he's taken up a joint venture with the Hyasyoda megacorporation and founded Dyishi Enterprises, a capsuleer subsidiary corporation of Hyasyoda focused in industry, R&D, and fulfilling security contracts with their police force, the CPF. Valerian has also recently began to make his name known in State politics, pushing for peace with the Federation and for the creation of more State Liberals.
