Title: Obligatory Music Thread
Post by: Sofia Roseburn on 18 Apr 2010, 07:02
You can tell a lot about a person from what music they listen to, so let's do a little bit of a social experiment.

Open up your media player, whichever one you use. Set it to random. Hit next, not just once, but ten times. List the ten tracks. Just because I'm interested to see whether Ammarians listen to Metallica more than Gallenteans.

1. Mogwai - Ratts Of The Capital
2. The Hives - Hate To Say I Told You So
3. Radiohead - Sit Down, Stand up. (Snakes & Ladders)
4. Ladytron - Laughing Cavalier
5. Crystal Castles - xxzxczx me
6. Broken Social Scene - Lover's Spit
7. Idlewild - I Want A Warning
8. The Notwist - Gravity
9. M83 - Violet Tree
10. Minus The Bear - El Torrente

Caldari, for the record.

Interesting idea... never done this before!  So, I queued my 40.1 gigs of mp3s in Winamp and set it to shuffle.  The ten songs were:

1. Marilyn Manson - Rock Is Dead
2. Dierks Bentley - Better Believer
3. Metallica - The God That Failed
4. Matchbox20 - Soul
5. Ne-Yo - Get Down Like That [Remix]
6. Bush - Little Things
7. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Deep Kick
8. Megadeth - Breakpoint
9. A Perfect Circle - Gravity
10. Genesis - Mama

e: I left it ride out on Shuffle like this and am hearing shit I haven't listened to in over a year... forgot I had all this Sarah McLachlan!  :D

Can't comply to the shuffle idea, since the only things in the media player on this craptop is Metallica's discography and various trailer music. However, I can just pick some random youtube favorites of mine until I got ten of them.

1. Alice Cooper - Dangerous Tonight (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TOWQqTtxnvg)

Nice first one. Sexiest tune ever.

2. Dope - Debonaire (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KlJMso7PnOs)

Not sure why I favorited this. I think I was looking for fight music. Just something angry and violent.

3. Tool - The Pot (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxEHLPhGriQ)

Come on, who doesn't like Tool? Ridiculously good progressive metal.

4. Satyricon - King (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQQdsKH3Qt8)

Norwegian-wrought metal. For some reason it's rhythm and riffs are incredibly sexy to me. I want to screw to this tune. It reaches down into my spine and starts tugging on the most primal strings it can find, reducing me to an animal level. Fantastic.

5. Marilyn Manson - (s)aint (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05O5M-GJh8Q)

One of MM's finest. Video is not work-safe. Or even prude-safe.

6. Two steps from Hell - Sons of War (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9fk-IuF8oY)

I have a penchant for 'epic' music. Trailer music usually delivers beyond any other genre when it comes to that.

7. Metallica - Turn the Page (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMqNFAU0tOw)

Finest coversong in the history of music.

8. Disturbed - The night disturbed (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8hnIqp4Xkw)

The themesong to the story I'm writing about how Gherena met Mizhara.

9. Benny Hill Themesong. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MK6TXMsvgQg)

Everything's funny if you speed it up and use this tune to it.

10. 300 credits tune. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5rMmGPmHQI)

Those credits are fantastic. It really shows how removing the 'humanity' from something by obscuring the face, and identifying features will truly make it more disturbing and fascinating. The music is also great. Tribal, rough, mournful and violent. Fantastic.

So, looking over this, I'd have to say I'm a metalhead in general.

Oh dear - shared music library list with the hubby put on shuffle... this should be fun...

We have alot of video game music - so I'll list them but only count them in the ten if I would of loaded them on my IPOD for the car.

a. Final Fantasy 9 prelude music
b. Chrono Trigger song (Hubby's)
c. Secret of Mana song - old 8 bit version too.
1. Duchess - Genesis.
d. FF7 victory song
2. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - Kokiri Forest
3. Wind Beneath My Wings: Bettle Miller
e. More Zelda music
f. More Chronotrigger
g. FF4- Chocobo song!

I am really starting to see why I listen to the radio more then my computer.... damn... Brian and his damn video games have invaded the music library... so I'm skipping video games I haven't played at this point

4.  No More Love : Shinedown
5.  What's Your Fantasy : Ludacris
6. She Will Be Loved: Maroon 5 (Thanks Hav!)
7. Bye Bye Beautiful: Nightwish (Ha - old vampire larp music from the bar - this brings back memories)
8. Fighter : Christina Anguelia
h. More Zelda music
9. The Ocean : Led Zepplin (Sweet! Good ole rock)
i. Three Final Fansty songs from three different games....
j. A Bit of Happines : .hack Sign
10. Lose Control: Evanescene

Not the most "Intaki" playlist I've ever seen and proof in the pudding of why Jack FM is FTW - this playlist has far too much video game stuff in it.  There is also a distinct lack of Ace of Base considering that's the CD in my car right now.

Somewhere along the lines Cyndi Lauper learned how to sing. I was surprised.

Also, 20 points to Scagga for having Laibach on the list. Best. Band. Ever. (Okok, I'm one of those "music as art" types, so I can't deny I am biased as Laibach is the musical extension of the Neue Slowenische Kunst movement, which I think is phenomenal. Yes yes. I'm a hoity-toity high society person. Sorta. Not really)

Anyway, as most of the music I listen to is not gathered off my MP3 list or playlists, I will pick 10 songs at random that I have been listening to recently -- especially since just spamming skip/shuffle on someone's MP3 list is a bit silly imo since there will be songs there they likely haven't listened to in almost a decade.

But I digress. 10 songs. Picked at from my history file in Chrome based on number of times the bands showed up. ;)

1. The Smiths - Last Night I Dreamt Somebody Loved Me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7KDm1Hf1rQk&feature=related)  Been getting back into The Smiths lately, haven't listened in a while, this is actually one of about 15 Smiths songs on my history that started with Bigmouth Strikes Again after I listened to it on a cover from Placebo.

2. Placebo - English Summer Rain (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nl7ir53Zndc&feature=related) What can be said about Placebo? They appear almost as much as The Smiths.

3. Korpiklaani - Wooden Pints (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIc4VHxU7iM) \m/ >.< \m/ DWAAARF FOOORTREESSSSS!!!

4. Blue Man Group - Exhibit 13 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZ396LZZu3k) These guys are amazing live, btw.

5. DJ Mike Relm - Office Space 'O' Face (Live at the 13th Annual Webby Awards) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bk170vq2Fws&feature=related) Seriously. Watch his stuff. ALL of it. This dude is a genius.

6. Southern Culture on the Skids - Camelwalk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUP5rwVNJko) Hee! Scots. This was my gf's fault I think.

7. Dave Matthews Band - Dreaming Tree (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mIWg9Ei_rI&feature=related) ...

8. A Perfect Circle - 3 Libras (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EoqXDPbivFs) I could have also placed Tool in here, I consider the two interchangable even though I know that's blasphemy to Tool fans.

9. Laibach - Slovania (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZicTSUXOlSg) I think this one is better than Yisrael. :P

10. Pantera - Fucking Hostile (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKUX8qaGfWs) \m/ >.< \m/

Hmm. The lack of Trent on this list disturbs me. Oh, that's because I don't youtube that because I've got every Halo on MP3. . . haha.

I was a youngin' around them times. I didn't really start paying attention to music until the late 80s when I was in my tweens an' shit. I took to music pretty abruptly though, and have incredibly eclectic tastes.

I hadn't honestly listened to The Smiths in about 10 years. Then The Smiths is Dead album came out, and all the covers made me yearn to hear Morrissey's voice yet again. Then some time passed, and I was in here listening to Placebo, and Bigmouth came on off the aforementioned The Smiths is Dead album, and my girlfriend went "Wait a minute. This is by The Smiths."

And so immediately we started listening to The Smiths, and I was informed that I need to take the time to learn to sing a few of their songs (such as the one linked) because, and I quote, "You've got that smooth, low voice, it's totally what you should be singing. . ."

. . . the things we do for love. ;)

Does the OP mind if we post further music recommendations in this thread? I have a habit of continuing music recommendation threads - both to share new/old music I come across, and get a feel for other music tastes :)

If the OP were to have no problem with that, I would recommend Spor - Electro Funeral (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnJDVlTWsOg)

My music collection is quite limited, as I have a bad habit of obsessively listening to many different artists online yet only buying one or two of their albums, or none in the case of some. It's starting to expand now, if slowly.

1. Clementine - The Decemberists

2. Dramamine - Modest Mouse

3. Alcohol - Gogol Bordello

4. Porcelina of the Vast Oceans - Smashing Pumpkins

5. Mama Said Knock You Out - LL Cool J (I shit you not)

6. Space Oddity - David Bowie

7. Hijomalind - Sigur Ros

8. Rubidoux - Cold War Kids

9. Love Me Two Times - The Doors

10. Another Rather Lovely Thing - Nick Cave & Warren Ellis

Which reminds me: I need to listen to some pre-composer Nick Cave.

The OP's official response to this most humble of requests is:

Ok so... I've got to post a link to this song. This is one of my favorite songs of all time and I would dare to say that this ending is one of the prettiest guitar solos I've ever heard, but I think listening to the entire song all the way through will make you appreciate it more.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChNolV4QZd4&feature=fvw

This song is the perfect example of proper hardcore. The beginning is absolutely fucking brutal but incredibly precise and then the ending is so beautiful it usually makes my eyes water up, but I get really into music  :). I love this song. Check it out

By the way, the video is fucking strange, so do something else while you watch it because it makes no sense

Emotionally conflicted and overly altruistic Federal, and Intaki traditionalist here, recently deceased.

1.God Is An Austronaut - Fall from the stars
2.Machinae Supremacy - Empire
3.Benassi Bros - Feel Alive
4.Mew - Snow Brigade
5.VNV Nation - Solitary
6.Kawai Kenji - Aintsuberun no Mori
7.Rammstein - Rein Raus
8.Suicide Commando - Face of Death
9.Kajiura Yuki - Kasukanari Aogi no Sai
10.Klovner i Kamp - De tre musketerer

Random, random stuff. There are so many others, mostly because I'm not a 'fan' of any special genre of music, but add songs and groups based on if I think that perticular song sounds nice, or the group does overall.

Also... the 'this is what a member of RP faction X listens to' stuff is kind of bizzare, we are all players here. Ofc when a person whose RP image is 'repent, turn to god or else etc. etc' lists heavy metal it does get a small smile from me  ;)

Roleplay at work folks, Roleplay at work.

Well, I think I can safely say that I have the strangest music collection of anyone here so far, at least going by ten random samples.  Oh and renegade/unconventional Amarrian here.

Ignite (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RsIfTk_kTxU) by T. M. Revolution From Gundam Seed

O Death (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VcZfyNtzm2A&feature=related) on the Oh Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack

Harmageddon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qx4XNxHkMuc) by Apocalyptica

Sheeli Ya Smeera by Shafeek Kabha  I couldn't find this one, not surprising as it is a middle eastern song

Shining Star (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojJTtPwheXc) on a Digimon soundtrack

Trace Amount (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4uVrq9P9kI) by Martin O’Donnell from Halo

Flight (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fb-6kBiKqFo) on the Outlaw Star soundtrack Please ignore the video, its not from Outlaw Star but it was the only video I could find.

The Ghost Ship (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbFQGCeCAu0) by Jesse Harlin on the Star Wars Republic Commando soundtrack (game)

Meeting on the Planet (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95VqGNrH0OY) by TWO-MIX

Like the Hush of 200 Million Years (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZlJM2aZZWM) by Mika Kaneko on the Macross 2 soundtrack

Bessie Smith - Empty Bed Blues
The Chemical Brothers - Come With Us
KLF - Jerusalem On The Moors

Medarr's theme song

Quote
Luck runs out

Crawl from the wreckage one more time
Horrific memory twists the mind
Dark, rutted, cold and hard to turn
Path of destruction, feel it burn

Still-life incarnation
Still-life infamy
Hallucination, heresy
Still you run, what's to come?
What's to be?

Cause we hunt you down without mercy
Hunt you down All Nightmare Long
Feel us breathe upon your face
Feel us shift, every move we trace

Hunt you down without mercy
Hunt you down all nightmare long, yeah
Luck runs out
You crawl back in, but your luck runs out

Luck runs out

The light that is not light is here
To crush you out with your own fear
You hide, you hide, but will be found
Release your grip without a sound

Still-life immolation
Still-life infamy

Hallucination, heresy
Still you run

What's to come?
What's to be?

Cause we hunt you down without mercy
Hunt you down All Nightmare Long
Feel us breathe upon your face
Feel us shift, every move we trace

Hunt you down without mercy
Hunt you down all nightmare long, yeah
Luck runs out
You crawl back in, but your luck runs out

Ooh

Then you crawl back in
Into your obsession
Never to return
This is your confession

Hunt you down without mercy
Hunt you down all nightmare long
Feel us breathe upon your face
Feel us shift, every move we trace

Hunt you down without mercy
Hunt you down, All Nightmare Long, yeah
Luck runs out
You crawl back in, but your luck runs out

CAUSE LUCK RUNS OUT!

1. VNV Nation - Serial Killer (Advance and Follow v2)
2. Finntroll - Svartberg (Midnattens Widunder)
3. Dragonforce - Black Winter Night (Valley Of The Damned)
4. Depeche Mode - World In My Eyes (Mode To Joy) (Remixes 81-04)
5. The Rasmus - In The Shadows (Dead Letters)
6. Apocalyptica - En Vie feat. Manu (Amplified: A Decade of Reinventing the Cello)
7. Disturbed - Forgiven (Ten Thousand Fists)
8. Sirenia - A Shadow Of Your Own Self (At Sixes and Sevens)
9. New Politics - Yeah Yeah Yeah (New Politics)
10. System Of A Down - Violent Pornography (Mesmerize)

Diverse taste in music is diverse. My latest taste in music is D&B and Dubstep, but I tend to just listen that online. I need to clean up my playlist because some of this stuff I have really outgrown. There are other genres in my playlist which just totally don't show up in here, either.

4. "That's Not My Name" - The Ting Tings
5. "Shut Up And Drive" - Rhianna

7. "Break It Down Again" - Tears for Fears
8. "Let it Whip" - Dazz Band
9. "Paper Walls" - Marc Cohn
10. "Bones" - Little Big Town

This actually isn't a terrible sample of what I listen to: though I'm baffled as to how the random shuffle managed to skip Aerosmith, Tom Petty, Def Leppard, Depeche Mode, Fleetwood Mac, Garbage, NIN, STP, Tangerine Dream and all of my GSMFLF ("God Save Me From Lilith Fair", to quote my DH) music.

2. Infected Mushroom - Dracul (Classical Mushroom)
3. mind.in.a.box - Run For Your Life (Crossroads)
4. Beehoven Symphony 7; Movement 1
5. Tom Lehrer - The Vatican Rag (That Was The Year That Was)
6. Shostakovich Symphony 5; Movement 4
7. The National - Fake Empire (Boxer)
8. Steely Dan - The Royal Scam (Royal Scam)
9. Rammstein - Ich Will (Mutter)
10. VNV Nation - Entropy (Matter and Form)

Reasonably diverse and not a bad cross-section. Misses out a lot of artists, granted, but it's enough for an idea. Would be interesting to do this every six months or so and see how the collection changes with time, but I'm surprised it missed out all the Depeche Mode, Dvorak, REM, and so on.

This is from my youtube playlist, which is long. However it is quite different to the music I keep on my phone (which has a huge memory, so I use it instead of an ipod). Youtube tends to be the music other people show me, and I like, whereas the stuff on my phone is the stuff I've actually bought. This has missed out loads of stuff I normally listen to, but it actually a pretty good sample of the stuff I listen to the most, as well as the styles of music I like.
