Question should be obvious. Feel free to add why if you actually thought about it.  :P

Using Google Chrome here, because Google.com told me it was faster.

They all the same right? Is there something I am missing?

They're not all the same!

Though thank you for not including the abomination that is IE 6.

Firefox 3, simply because I've used it for so long. Oh, and Adblock Plus is <3

They're not all the same!

Though thank you for not including the abomination that is IE 6.

As time goes on they get closer and closer to being all the same because the best ones (such as Chrome and FireFox) are open-source, so everyone just steals all their shit anyway.

The differentiation is very small.

I use Chrome because (quite flatly) it is the closest to properly running HTML3 and HTML4 code of all the available browsers (save Opera, but I hate the interface of Opera), so it gives me the least trouble.

Also the fact that each tab is its own process, so if I have a tab crash I just lose the one tab and not all of them.

And also the fact that it's incredibly secure because it offers no low-level access to anything that runs on it, save plugins, except I don't even use Flash anymore because HTML4 streams video and audio better than Flash.

:|

I could go on.

I've used Mozilla since 2005, and have loved it since.

Yes. Hush, I had a nitwit on the phone that I was trying to teach how to use dialup in Win7 at the same time I was typing it.

IE8 isn't that bad. It's functionally equivalent to FF2.

IE 8, how I love you.

Also, yes, I've tried Opera, Chrome, and Firefox. Still loving good old IE.

Why restrict yourself?

On the computer I'm currently on, I have IE8, firefox and Opera open - I'm typing this on Opera.

At home on the Eve-box I have Firefox and Opera open, and on the email/IRc/Maps box I have Opera and Firefox running.

I avoided Chrome after reading some articles about it phoning home. I have safari installed somewhere, but that was apple trying to be sneaky. I don't use it. And I only use IE at home to connect to the corporate intranet.

Does any of that help?

Uhm.

FireFox phones to google too.

OH NOES! GOOGLEZ IS TEH SPYZING!! (http://"http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2008/09/update-to-google-suggest.html")

Quote
Here's what happens under the hood. To provide its recommendations Google Suggest needs to know what you've already typed, so these partial queries are sent to Google. For 98% of these requests, we don't log any data at all and simply return the suggestions. For the remaining 2% of cases (which we select randomly), we do log data, like IP addresses, in order to monitor and improve the service.

However, given the concerns that have been raised about Google storing this information -- and its limited potential use -- we decided that we will anonymize it within about 24 hours (basically, as soon as we practically can) in the 2% of Google Suggest requests we use. This will take a little time to implement, but we expect it to be in place before the end of the month.

And:

Quote
Google Suggest is actually built into a number of different products including Google Search, Google Toolbar, browsers like Google Chrome and Firefox, and the Google Search application on the iPhone.

Check it, been built into FireFox for years. :|

I should note here that you can turn it off in Chrome. Probably in Firefox, too, but in Chrome, unless you do, everything you type in the address bar is sent to Google for suggestion fodder.

This doesn't seem like a big problem in any way, though. Options > Under the Hood > "Show a suggestion service to help complete searches and URLs typed in the address bar". Uncheck it and you're good to go.

You're not paranoid -- lots of us work in related areas IRL. ;)

I mostly use Chrome because, to date, it has the best security record out there in terms of focused testing. Largely, this stems from an improved security model, plus lessons learned over the years from the other browsers that have forged the way.

Opera for the most part. Depends on what I am doing. I have IE7, Opera, chorme and firefox all installed. I prefer Opera because they were always the fastest. It was also easy to dig into the locally stored files and back in the day of dial up you could turn off parts of web pages to make it load so much faster.

I'm surprised someone still uses IE.

IE8 is just fine. Web sites load fast, display well and it doesn't crash all the time like a certain other open source browser.

I'm surprised anyone is still using Firecrash.

I find Opera, IE8 and Chrome to be better choices.

You be lucky. Seems since Google pulled their developers off the Mozilla group and put them on Chrome that FF has been going downhill in performance, stability and features. For the unfortunate among us maybe the new out-of-process plugins feature (a feature that IE8 and Chrome have had for some time now) will help stop the browser crashing.

I used to revert to IE8 for Youtube viewing, because Flash and Chrome never played nice.

Thank god for HTML5, it is in all ways superior to Flash. I bet Adobe is starting to realize this is a problem for them.

Hardly....

"While HTML5’s video support enables us to bring most of the content and features of YouTube to computers and other devices that don’t support Flash Player, it does not yet meet all of our needs. Today, Adobe Flash provides the best platform for YouTube’s video distribution requirements, which is why our primary video player is built with it."

http://apiblog.youtube.com/2010/06/flash-and-html5-tag.html (http://apiblog.youtube.com/2010/06/flash-and-html5-tag.html)

We ran some tests here in the office. HTML5 video was using up more CPU.  :bash:

I'm also curious as to how you block ads in HTML5 ...

It currently uses more CPU, but it's also giving a higher quality of video and audio as compared to its Flash counterpart.

This is an exchange I'm cool with.

Scirbd also switched to HTML5 away from Flash. The writing is on the wall, even if HTML5 is not quite where it needs to be. This is why I am saying Adobe has to see it coming. Especially with Apple giving up on Flash for many of the same reasons.

Also, Adobe is a security risk. HTML5 is not.

HTML5 is not better quality video. Where did you get that idea from? Steve Jobs' ass? (kidding) If anything Flash gives extra features over HTML5 to improve quality. (http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/news.php?id=59429 (http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/news.php?id=59429))

Scribd is running extremely slowly now on around 61% of the internet browsers (IE). In Opera layout is poor. I think only Chrome displays that site properly, didnt test it on FF. Not to mention it's not HTML5. (http://loud.anotherquietday.com/post/598121586/scribds-html5-is-a-mess (http://loud.anotherquietday.com/post/598121586/scribds-html5-is-a-mess)). Nice marketing to jump on the HTML5 hype bandwagon though. ;)

What have you been smoking? HTML5 is certainly a security risk. Open up new functions in the browser and you open up new potential vulnerabilities and risks.

That depends on the browser. If you're looking at a browser like Opera, Chrome, or FireFox that limit the abilities of a web page to access the ability to run shit on the PC then Flash -- which by being a seperate program can circumvent such limitations -- is considerably greater of a security risk than HTML5 is.

Depending on the browser and security settings, of course. But once a plugin fires up, your security settings mean jack.

I get that from my own viewing. The video since I switched to HTML5 has had better audio and video over when I was using Flash. Notably so.

Except it is HTML5, that page doesn't even say it's not HTML5, they just say its crappy HTML5. Fairly new markup language, you should expect a lot of it to be a coder's nightmare for a while. Hell, there are HTML4 sites that are as they describe. . . And it displayed fine in FF when I was looking over a bud's shoulder. Opera does have a conniption with it. It looks fine on IE8, but as you said runs like poo.

New things do this, this does not make them sub-par because people are still figuring out how to use it properly and improve upon it.

I think it's funny how so many browsers have the same cycle.

Somebody creates a lightweight browser. Everybody loves it, raves about it, and it gains a fanatical following.

Over time, it gains features and bloat. People start complaining.

A new browser is created, often with varying degrees of connection to the original. Everybody starts raving about new hotness and drops old and busted.

Rinse, lather, repeat.

I'd recommend switching to Chrome particularly for such things (e.g. online banking, etc.), as many of us who work in this area consider it less insecure than Firefox.

I'd quite like to switch to Chrome, personally, but the convenience of Firefox + XMarks + NoScript + AdBlock is pretty hard to leave behind. I have IE7 and IE8 at work, and I find them to be obnoxiously slow and lacking in middle mouse button support for opening links in new tabs / closing tabs. Admittedly, I haven't looked very hard because I mostly use Firefox, but it does seem to be a large oversight.

This is mostly posited as a question, mind you.

Also, does the new (chrome-based IIRC?) IGB allow HTML5? I herd they disabled flash for security reasons, hence the question.
