Title: Fanfest 2013, april 25-27
Post by: Kaldor Mintat on 12 Dec 2012, 09:38
http://community.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&nbid=74099

In normal order-who is going, not going, planning to go but will end up cancelling etc. etc.

Since 2013 is also Eve's 10th year birthday it will hopefully be something special above "normal" fanfest.

I'm aiming to go the year after this one. My life should be much more in order by that point.

You and I are in the same boat here - I'd love to go for years with my RL buddy, but I'm sure I'd feel mostly out of place in any bars, being a non-drinker. Add to that costs, and despite all the other things that would make me WANT to go, I never have. I'm seriously considering it this year, but finances will be very tight even if I do plan to go and start saving up now, and then there's the question of what I'd do there - especialyl now as my mentioned buddy no longer plays EVE and can't afford to go.

I'd love to, but probably won't be able to due to economic issues.

As for those of us who don't drink, there still are lots of things to do, and being around drunk people is not (usually) that bad!

Tickets are apparently officially sold out, per CCP.

Either they're yanking my chain in order to drive up the demand, and then release "special tickets" at higher price, or they're sincere.  In either case, goddamnit CCP.

If anyone has a ticket at the moment, but has plans change in the future that may cause them to have to miss FF, PM me in-game.  I'd be willing to buy it from you for a fair price.

I'd go, but I have no money. Even if I do, I don't really have a group or clique to hang with. Going alone to FF sounds like a pretty retarded idea.

There's tons of ways to introduce yourself, for example:

* Go to panels (like the RP one I'm sure exists this year) and be social (ie, not a dick).
* Hang out at bars being frequented, or chill at Nonni's.
* Shout out "I was there, at Asakai!" and watch as hundreds of people join in (potentially).

I mean, hell, the first people I ran into during '11 was a bunch of people at the Boston airport's international terminal... ironically they were with a group who's titan we had just blown up.  Still got along.

I'm actually offering to do commentary for the Fanfest tournament, so I'll have to actually sleep a couple of the nights if I wind up doing that.  We'll see.  Not sure if Dolan (the guy I'm fairly sure is running that) saw the SCL or not.

Morlag's notes from the Live Events panel - UNEDITED AND ROUGH.
Quote
Live Events panel!

CCP Goliath, Affinity, Eterne, Falcon and DelegateZero

Soft cloning!
- More a storyline question, need to go to Storyline panel with Abraxas and Gnauton.

NA Events!
- Resources are limited, but so much of playerbase in America...
-- We're aware that a big percentage of the sub base is in US, want to alleviate but in a position where everyone involved is in Reykjavik - need to expand team or figure out how to manage off-TZ events. Would like to run for EU, US, Pacific. Need to sort out manpower and then ramp things up over time. No roadmap at the moment.
-- There's a few who don't mind staying late in the office, but manpower + vols from within company are required.
-- Have prelim ideas on how to increase coverage, internal meetings to try and sort out a roadmap are planned for US + weekend timezones. Family/work/school is acknowledged and understood - working on coming up with a solution.

Six-month schedule
- Don't have the sched mapped out yet, time crunch due to FF prevented getting one done. WILL BE SPOILERS AT END FOR STUFF.
- Would like to resolve outstanding arcs - repairing Malkalen, Yulai in particular are ideas floating around.
- Fixing stations requires development time - world-shaping events are something people are passionate about but things need to show it's worth the time.

Player corp initiative in live events - how much init. can we take to get them to start up
- Cannot have bias, but we can advertise stuff through actors and such.
- Adapt and react to "how much you guys screw our plans up"
- Kane Spero's OB tournament.

Plans to mix smaller ccp roams in player events - conflict of interest, bias?
- Yellow text vs. blue text - yellow is live events, blue is shits and giggles
- Protest outside CEP station, Falcon just made a random character and had some fun with it.

How much buy-in do LE have w/ CCP development structure - CP was well-received but problems w/ messaging and seemed like technical tools were missing
- this six-month run was a proof of concept; Seagull as the new sr. producer is very into lore and story; making content more organic.
- Rolling out features via events rather than straight-up patches. This stuff doesn't happen overnight.
- Buy-in for creating tools is high rather than new art assets.
- w/r/t 2011, there were other priorities.
- V3 project is a bottleneck here too for new assets
- There WILL be a team dedicated to Content Tools.
- Will be more generalized tools.

Process between storyline and live events - how does it work w/in ccp
- Storyline exists on multiple layers - high-level arc set by the storyline team + IP development.
- Underneath, multiple arcs we can have that go back and forth. Shaping of these arcs is organic between those teams.
- Arcs can develop based on player reactions in varying direction.

Resolving sansha events
- We want to do stuff with existing hanging plot threads, but needs to be cleared through storyline.
- As this team we will NOT start anything that we will not finish. - CCP Affinity

Null/low/high
- Null is the heart of 'sandbox' gameplay. We wouldn't want to decide to hold an event there, show up and oops, we disrupted something like someone's logistics chain as a result.
- Do not want the preception that live events are only for highsec (or lowsec). Null events will happen eventually. Same thing for w-space.

Goons vs. QA modules
- We won't be doing that again. It was funny - people dying to concord is always funny - but we won't be doing it again.

Loyalty thread!
- Can we declare opposition rather than just loyalty?
- Blow 'em up. Maybe a "declare your antipathy" thread.

What barriers to branching storyarcs, scripted vs. unscripted events - Caldari Prime, for example
- We do want players to influence events. But we had to have things on rails for right now - we didn't know the rules yet. (Goliath)
- There was NO WAY that titan was going to live. It might have taken ten hours but it would have died.
- Not going to promise that there won't be scripted events, if we NEED them for huge storyline changes, we will have them.
- May have mods not available to players but they will fit thematically.

AURORA
- Volunteer groups are NOT an option - AURORA worked then, it would not work now.
- It would be great, we'd love the help, but the burden of regulating it would take up too much time.

Surprise vs. scheduled
- Storylinewise, sometimes we NEED it to be a surprise because that's the point (Evaulon)
- Issue we have is if we put out news 24h in advance. 48h it gets bigger. It spirals out o control - it's an issue of crowd control.
- CP we came out with the best case scenario rather than breaking the node.
- Breadcrumbs are a cool idea but not easy to get into game.

GOLIATH SURPRISE
- CCP-created in-character, weekly news show. IDea being kicked around. No promises bt it is being kicked around with abraxas and gnauton.

Live vents are FULLY recognized by CCP at this point, largely thanks to the reaction from the players.

CP stream
- People watched, about 5x more than goliath and zulu were betting on

Seems like it would be straight-forward to have events in the NPC null or edges.  Angels going after folks hunting them in Curse (duh?) for example.

I too would greatly enjoy seeing the ambient PVE environment actually being a meaningful threat to players. Although that is a larger issue that stretches beyond merely Live Events.

Over all the Live Event notes seem to indicate they will be better developed in the coming months on the technical side. I am concerned they'll do more Caldari Prime repeats (an on-rails event sold as a free form one), but hopefully by acknowledging they will put some events on rails the sale to players will be more clear.

Of course this may also directly impact the roleplay community's participation; I am not aware of how receptive the people are to predestined major events.

Two parts to the cost.
A) what other players will sell them to you for
B) concord will charge you a price to cash them in.

A) is up to the market (although CCP will tweak the spawn rates as they see how it pans out) andB) is another way to charged weak it.

The big question to me is spawn rates

1. David Reid
2. David Reid
3. ???
4. David Reid

That man really knows how to talk, is energetic, is engaging and is genuinely interesting to listen to. Putting him as CMO is definitely one of CCP's seriously good decisions of recent years.

\o/ I drank too much last night.

Vendrin and I were last seen at 3:30 am leaving the bars.  I have a phone call from my phone to his at 4:30 that was answered, meaning we somehow got split up around then.  Next memory is 8:30, my alarm going off.  I've been hurting all day.

Apparently that didn't fuck with me too much though, as my tourney team is going to the finals vs PL Saturday.  \o/

Because the stream died though, my interview got pushed back, so I won't be on until tomorrow or Saturday.

New jump effects give off a massive Freelancer vibe. It's pretty damn cool.

The art provided for the gate construction looks a lot like the art for Homeworld 2 did with the Pride of Hiigara being constructed. I'd hazard a guess it struck a good chord.

However, when the keynote becomes available on Twitch I'll see if I can grab the relevant bits. I imagine that'd be tomorrow.

CCP Seagull did a very nice "this is my dream for the future of EVE" spot in her talk. (There was also a very nicely put-together review of EVE's history, and there will be Oculus Rift demos tomorrow.)

I think I'm now a bittervet: in my view the keynote almost made up for the storyline session.

I don't like what they did to the apoc. Except the new back of the ship, it really didn't need all of this. It lost most of his past austere majesty.

I have been pretty much happy for all redesigns though, so I guess I have eventually to face one I do not like... But artistically, it doesn't make much sense to me. They should have done it like the Raven, with very diffuse/minor changes to polish it a bit more, nothing more.

Oh well, it still looks good though.

Not got a single complaint about the proposed and confirmed content, for either dust or eve.  I guess my only continuing gripe is the ongoing attempts tp band aid industry with resource changes, instead of trying to fix the sod-awful UI and mechanics.  BUT that is a minor complaint in the grand scheme of things, personally.

Old Apoc was one of the three ugliest Amarr ships (along with the Crucifier and Revelation). The shape was just too... well, it looked like a plastic toy rifle. New one is much better.

Not in my eyes, the most good looking amarrian BS for me. Want something really ugly in Amarr hulls, check the Aeon... :/

Anyway I was not so much speaking out of tastes, but in terms of artistic direction. Still my opinion of course. But concerning my personal tastes, as I said above I am still fine with it, it still looks good. Better overall, even.

And yeah I am kind of happy that they decided to cover it with armor underneath. I just do not like at all what they did on the armor patterns above.

I am thinking that easily isolated ice belt systems and lowsec mining systems are going to increase massively in value. I can think of a few places that fit the bill, the local crews are either going to find themselves with a great resource for recruiting or get their ass kicked by other more motivated organizations.

Post by: Morwen Lagann on 27 Apr 2013, 09:28
I didn't go to the resource panel (was busy doing something there'll be pictures of... Soon™) but iirc ice 'belts' will be moved to cosmic anomalies - the ones that your regular scanner (without probes) can find.

Just sat through the Apoc redesign panel with Cael, Stitcher, Screwball and Soter - they showed us the process from prototypes all the way up to the final product. (Edit: PALADIN WILL HAVE ITS OWN, SEPARATE MODEL. IT IS NOT DONE YET, BUT PROBABLY WILL BE IN ODYSSEY.)

They apparently do have a concept for a new Dominix model but no exact timeline (possibly the winter expansion if we're lucky).

Well, I will upgrade it to a major complaint in the grade scheme of things, personally.  Its were I spend most of my time.

The ore changes are a band-aid for a side-effect of mineral compression and what I see as a player behavior (unwillingness to mine in belts in 0.0).

The T2 component changes and complex material additions are attempts to limit bottlenecks created by a lack of distributed moon sources and large, capable player organizations.   Every T2 component already had a low-end racial material (the Carbides, Carbonide), so adding these high-ends to the most used/most expensive components is shaking up an already complex system.  I doubt think it will stop Platinum Technite (Nanotransistors and Fullerides) from being an overall bottleneck.

Can one of you indy hounds elaborate on what the changes mean?

The T2 component changes and new complex materials means that Microprocessors and Capacitors will probably see a spike.  These two components are broadly used across T2 module production as well as ship production.  The need to use as yet unavailable materials to produce Microprocessors and Capacitors immediately following release will create a lag in production.

Anyone using large quantities of reactors can likely purchase sufficient stores to wait out the markets reaction to the 4 new materials - they currently sell in Jita for less than the material cost.

As the spike in MPs and Caps occurs, there maybe a dip in Morphite demand - if it is to expensive to buy MPs and Caps for producing T2 stuff, I don't need the Morphite.

The mineral changes will impact null more and we may see a decrease in hub demand for common, compressed goods in the long term.  But the lag will be enormous since most production occurs in high-sec for a variety of reasons, chiefly security of BP libraries and ease of access to large material markets and the ability to sell excess quickly.

EVE Source might be the resource I've been wanting, although the focus on coffee table and beautiful art won't leave much space for textual content in the number of pages they mentioned.

Definitely curious. Trying to buffer myself against disappointment.

Also, the comics based on True Stories sound potentially cool for OOC stuff, and will be free online.

Some highlights from last night's party:
- of all the drinks I had only one was paid for (by me). All the others were given or 'bought' by devs with these 'beer token' passes.
- singalong with Uncle Suas + Goons and a very very drunk Mittani Bacchanalian. Yes I got pictures.
- lots of interesting conversations with devs about a wide range of things, including possible conflict mechanics for space elevators and a possible lore-related contest
- hugs from and lots of pictures with lots of devs (even Hilmar :3) and a number of other EVE celebrities.

Posting from my iPod while slightly hungover so my apologies for any typos :P

It looks more futuristic than the semi-fluid shapes of the old Apoc. The design change in CCPs art department has been noticable over the years, starting to some degree with the Tier 3 battleships. The Abaddon could use a touch-up as well I think.

Can't say I really like the new Apoc better. I'm going to miss the old/current Apoc. I really loved it for being so minimal in appearance.

I also dislike what happened to the Maller, mind you  I might cry if the Punisher ever gets revamped to that blocky style too.

e; That said I'm really enjoying watching these updates and news as they trickled in! Wish I was there.
