Being in the legal right and being smart are not always the same thing.

Smart companies with nerdy IP that have an extremely narrow set of interested customers might be smarter to have a good relationship with the tiny amount of nerds who are still interested in the IP.  It costs nothing to get a good relationship going and good press with the people who like your shit and will spread your gospel.  It costs who knows what in the future to have bad press and look like insensitive tools.

Social media : CCP is awesome and blessed us and supported our tiny remake of a dead game, aren't they great?

I don't have a stake in the vampire IP in the slightest but some of these companies need to hire entirely new PR teams.
