[Character] Quintrala
« on: 21 Feb 2014, 15:05 »

Well, here goes my story and background, nothing secret and mostly published IC already. Will be posting some old stories later to better fill background, as well as writing new ones.

Name: Catherine DELOROIS
Callsign: "Quintrala"
Date of Birth: YC 86.11.24, age 29 as of this writing
Planet of Birth: Eram II, Minmatar Republic
Licensed: YC 108.12.18
Ethnicity: Ethnic Gallente, with a tad of Intaki (immigrant background)
Heigth: 1.75m
Weight: 59kg
Alignment: Chaotic good
Personality: ENFP ("Champion" in the Myers-Briggs test)

Personality and Character

Catherine has been an expat since the day she was born; by the time she returned to her home culture she found herself a foreigner there, too. As a result, she has developed a positive, easygoing, social and open character, possibly as a mechanism to deal with her ever-changing environment and with people from most backgrounds. She makes new friends easily and has learned to let go of old ones; understands there are several points of view to a single story and knows better than to delve into political or religious dispute. She has however been known to do so in order to intentionally annoy people or stubbornly stand by her own viewpoints; if there is a mean side to her, she hides it very well.

For all her acceptance of diverse opinions, one of the driving forces in her life is personal choice (I want, therefore I am). Her life has also shown her how powerful a group can be, that comes together because of individuals with needs and desires that are similar or complement each other.

She can be determined, impulsive, daring, intuitive and unstructured; will question everything gently and out of genuine curiosity. She will not always make the right decision or the one you expected, but it will make sense to her and she will find herself at ease living with her choices.

Early life

Born in Eram, Catherine Delorois is the daughter of Federation diplomat Philippe Delorois and artist Gabrielle Comtesse. As her father was posted to new diplomatic assignments and the Delorois family moved across the cluster, Catherine was raised in Eram, Pator, Tash-Murkon and Amarr; her nickname "Quintrala" is said to come from her schooldays in Matari worlds (see mioar - kütral); during her time in the Amarr Empire she attended Alliance Gallentoise schools at Federation diplomatic grounds. She is the younger of two siblings and has had the easier life of a second child; growing up an expat, she lacked deep cultural and social roots other than her immediate family, being constantly exposed to new places, people and customs.

Graduating from school at age 17, Quintrala moved to Luminaire to live by herself. After a year of independent life and at the behest of her father, she was admitted to the University of Caille Business School in 104. While an undergraduate at UC Bourynes campus she became engaged to a fellow student, becoming partners on a two-year renewable period under Auvergne law. Graduating in 108, the couple settled in Clermont, Auvergne, where she would specialise in Wineries & Trade and pursue a Master's degree at the neighboring UC Odotte campus, while he developed the St. Croix family wine estate. It is thought that her partner's reluctance to go capsuleer, the long time spent apart, as well as rumours always surrounding racing personalities stressed their relationship. By late 110, there are no records of the couple's contract being renewed, although they remain cordial and are often seen together when in Auvergne.

Life in Space

Quintrala enrolled in capsuleer training at UC, obtaining her license in 108. As a newly graduated trader-capsuleer she landed a job as courier with Aliastra in Tash-Murkon, while remaining a graduate student with UC in Sinq Laison. The resulting commute prompted her to look for help at the UC Astronautics department in fitting ever faster frigates, to reduce travel time. She raced once, out of a dare, but soon joined the ISGC/ISRC racing circuit in year 109 to start a pro racing career that would span five years in various roles as racer, Instructor, Team Captain, Team Manager and League Official; she would eventually win three Championships, one in each official starship class. She was always associated with team Scuderia Dragonstar (formerly Scuderia Caille), the so-called 'Green Team' and one of the league Big Three, which was known for embracing diversity, racing innovation, unorthodox tactics and fielding some of the fastest racers in the Frigates class.

Catherine obtained her graduate certificate from the UC Gallente Business Entrepeneur Elite programme in April 111. After graduation she joined Dragonstar, one of the parent corporations to the racing team and later that year, after her third gold cup, retired from racing in 111 YC to focus in team management. She briefly returned to the track two years later for the second NE-RA racing season but retired permanently after the NE-RA League closed its doors during the YC 113 bookmark abuse scandal.

Looking for new experiences, she signed up with a new Black Rise-based mercenary corporation in YC 114, along with her friend and former racing team mate Kayleigh Jamieson. She took over a daily operational role as Director in many areas outside of her comfort zone: WH operations, Industry (invention/manuf), POS management, logistics, hauling and FW ship replacement. After a year of successes but not exempt of embarrassing mistakes, the Industry Department led by Catherine had, in the local parlance, returned the two-POS corp to self-sustained profitability.

A painful personal experience led to her sudden resignation and move back to the Federation in YC 115. As of this writing, Catherine has joined a small NGO associated to SOE, based off Sinq Laison and run by close friends and former UC-108 classmates (Allez Caille!)

I like. I think more people should start using Meyers-Briggs and Keirsey more often in their character bios.

Hey everyone.

OOC time.

Not long ago, I was involved in an in-character situation I did not really seek. I believe I handled it in very much in the same way I would have in Real Life, which is what I often aim to when I roleplay -I tend to react rather than script. That being said, it was messy. To say the least.

The situation I faced meant the demise of a seven-year story arc that had been growing gradually. It grew on hints and guesses, on a backstory not shown to anyone, deep background and discovery by RP. And there is no way around it, it died a sudden, painful death in my arms while there was not much I could do about that.

(I think Graelyn had something like this happen in one arc of his?).

Now at this stage I did have a choice, as one always does. I could have shrugged this off and stand by my corp and corpmates, putting my character second and forgetting everything Quin had grown into -Death of Roleplay. Or be true to my character and lash back, regardless of who was in the way. I felt, and still feel, that I could not possibly leave Quin behind. So that was my choice, I lent her the keyboard for a while and let her pour her heart out, in spades. Now that... that was the burial.

I guess that what I am trying t say is I am sorry if I hurt you IRL. Yes you, you idiot. I was mad IC and I was mad OOC, and there is still much I do not understand of your own choices. Yet it pains me to think the choices I made myself, freely, may have caused grief in RL. It was always meant for the character.

(Looks around, clears her throat.)

A painful personal experience led to her sudden resignation and move back to the Federation in YC 115. As of this writing, Catherine has joined a small NGO associated to SOE, based off Sinq Laison and run by close friends and former UC-108 classmates (Allez Caille!)

Having said that, I now face more choices on character development and would like to ask the community for input. Quintrala has grown, and changed. She had always been a bright-eyed pacifist for whom holding a grudge has been hard, hurting wrong and shooting, a matter of shame. But I have been given something that is now part of Quin's story -please know that I will not disregard it- and I find myself now having the choice whether to develop her vindictive motivations, or not. It would be organic growth, not too far-fetched and I have found ways it would work IC, but only within a short time window... and that window is closing quickly.

So here is my choice.  I could go back to positive and ladylike. Be gracious and accept life gives one lemons, make lemonade and sing a happy working song:D

Or, I could make life take the lemons back. I can go a shade darker, take a single step from Fairy to Witch (so fashionable now); it will be underhanded, it will be evil and it will be great. No more spontaneous combustion - some characters may now be hurt intentionally. I will explore places not everyone will like. (I wish I'd had a friend like that in high-school, it would have been so much fun.)

Today, I do not know which one. It will be my choice, but I would love your ideas.

Anything to add, Quin?

Quintrala> Not really. Would you make it clear to them you are not asking for their permission, but rather their opinion...?

Oh yes, that.

So what do you guys think?

Q

PS: The boosters thing, not in question. That will happen anyway.

I can't give any specific or insightful advice because I do not think any of my characters have interacted with Quin, but my first reaction is to not go too dark/vindictive/cynical because it has become so common. There are ways to add grey areas, there are ways to keep a similar demeanor but attain new actions - or same actions with a new demeanor. Etcetera. Of course, if you think a dramatic change fits best with the situation and character don't let anything stop you - but flipping the switch can be a bit hard to come back from or even develop after it has happened because people often have their characters respond to that sort of thing in a very standard way that can be difficult to play off of.

Wanton cynicism is the flavor of the year, and as such it comes with its limitations.

Personally, I think you answered your own question for yourself in the first bit I quoted.

As for the second part... what's wrong with doing both? Just because she seems nice and happy in public doesn't mean she has to be that way in private. People wear masks. They hide things from others all the time based on little more than present company, time of day, location... (Just ask anyone who actually interacts with Morwen outside of the Summit or a rare appearance at a venue location, for example. She might generally be civil and keeping-it-together in public, but in private? )

Perhaps the vindictive stuff only comes out with people she trusts. Or thinks can further goals fueled by that vindictiveness. There's places this can go.

And I know about limited windows of opportunity - I made a gamble on one last year; it didn't pan out as hoped and as a result it's more or less completely fucked me over IC, barring some seriously odd things happening that would probably amount to divine intervention. They suck, royally - but you just have to make a decision and go with it one way or another, even if it is to just not take advantage of it.

Of course, with the multiple-masks middle-of-the-road option, you kind of can take advantage of it, and if it doesn't pan out, well... you still can have fun with both sides of the coin.

Morwen's Law:
1) The number of capsuleer women who are bisexual is greater than the number who are lesbian.
2) Most of the former group appear lesbian due to a lack of suitable male partners to go around.
3) The lack of suitable male partners can be summed up in most cases thusly: interested, worth the air they breathe, available; pick two.

Now that we have lawful neutral's and lawful evil's (respectively) opinions, here is chaotic evil's:

That time window is like a wormhole with sixteen hours left and on the verge of collapse. Are you just going to let it fade away, maybe missing out on a newly evicted class five with tons of un-shielded POS mods and loot? Or are you going to tear through, expecting a TP dread gank fleet in your Moros, grab those lemons by the nuts, and have fun with a twist that you have already thought about in-depth?

Maybe not the best euphemism.

And no need for Quin to be cynical if she honestly thinks she is righting a wrong.

Dark is great! Dark is EVE, but don't burn too many bridges by going somewhere most characters would find morally untouchable. Or, if you do keep it in the down-low unless you don't mind being a piriah to some.

I'm not sure where I stand in the D&D spectrum but...
I think you will like the darker path. At least, you've sold that one a lot better to me, so...
Then again, I, and by extension Ché, tend to gravitate to darker characters, so I can't say I'm objective.

Regardless, maybe you want to contact Ché. Although I won't be ingame for about two weeks and can't even guarantee a timely response to an eve-mail at this time, I would not mind if my char would get caught up in a part of your char's life, whichever option you choose.
Heck, chances are that when Ché hears about this speed fairy's involvement in a SOE associated corp, he'll contact you.

Thanks for all your comments!

I think evil is in the eye of the beholder - someone's right is someone else's wrong. True, one should not go overboard lest your right be everyone's wrong so I guess it is a good thing there are shades of grey in between. So many shades of grey that I am having trouble picking one.

I hear the cake is a lie though, so no, I am not flipping out and becoming Darth Valérie or something like that. Partners in crime (minions?) may be interesting ;)

Gossip

Part of my Origin Story, originally posted here.

Gossip

It was October, YC 91.

I still remember Eram on my skin, sunlight warm and nice, a big green garden full of grass and trees and a pergola at the back. I was born there.

It was dad's first senior diplomatic assignment as an expert-technical-advisor-whatever-attaché to the Fed consulate to the Sebiestor tribe. We used to live in the expat district among so many foreigners and well-to-do Matari. My first memories are of stuff so alien to most that, well, it is just funny. Like people driving everywhere - sure, you can walk around at ground level but, it is so warm and things so far apart that by the time you get there, you need bug-bite cream and a clothes change. Airco rules. Or, playing with Paul in the mud, actual mud, in our garden without grownups yelling at us. Or, iguanas on the roof basking in the sun - mom once asked what could be done about those and was given a stew recipe, ew.

Totally alien, I tell you.

Anyhow, Paul and I attended this school nearby, the International School of Eram, where all the snobby kids like us would go wearing our little uniforms, learn boring stuff like reading and would go play out once in a while. I met my first friends back there, most of them Matari like Taro and Reba and Fred, and some expats like myself. On days off we would get together, sometimes at my place, sometimes at theirs.

By age four I had noticed something funny. Not a single one of the local kids was coming to my place. There was nothing wrong with the place, mind you. We had a room full of toys and dolls and holos and stuff, and my big brother even had that cool Capitaine Chasseur and the Fed Patrol drone set. But other than my Gallentean friends, no one else would ever show up. The strangest thing was, everything was nice and happy when I went to their places.

"Maman, why won't they visit with us?" I asked mom once.

She smiled. Did she suppress a giggle? Kids do notice, even if you do not think so "Oh, Catherine, do not worry about that, it is just a silly thing. You can always go play with them at theirs, if you want."

"But, I want to show them my stuff! Like this here my doll Anne and her friends, she never gets to play with my friends. And Taro has always wanted to see Paul's toys, but he will not come over and..."

She frowned a bit "Look, sweetie, there is this little thing called gossip. Do you know what it is?" I shook my head. "Gossip is when one talks to friends and then one's friends go and talk to their friends about the same thing."

I understood at once. "Okay, so the gossip lets us all stay in touch!" :D I had just found a new and very powerful means of communication. I wondered whose friends I could reach with this and all the new people I would meet, cool! I just needed to get myself a gossip and I'd be set.

Mom rolled her eyes. "Well yes and no."

She was being shifty, I knew, she wanted to hide this from me becausethegossipisagrownupthing or youarenotoldenoughforasubscription or something. I put my best face, smiled but stood my ground. "How so? Why? Can I have a gossip too? Please? Please?"

"A gossip is not something you have, it is something you do Cathy," -nobody called me Quin, yet- "You go and gossip with friends of yours, and they will go and gossip with theirs. It is fun but sometimes... it is not as fun."

So that was the problem. Mom then told me how she had learned from her friends, who in turn had learned from their daughters, that Reba had heard a story that went something like this:

They put something weird in the water supply at Gallente homes, so kids grow up to be dopeheads just like their parents.

And Reba was in a position to know. Her father, a chief at the waterworks, sometimes mentioned a mysterious Gallentean-sounding substance called 'Fleury' that went into the water. Our water.

Mom explained that it was called fluoride, silly, and it prevented your teeth from falling out when you grow up; that if parents sometimes acted funny, it was normal. As for the dopehead thing, our great nation is a free nation and people grow up to be dopeheads on their own, if they want to.

"So is Reba right? Is there something in our water?"

"No no, Cathy! There can only be good stuff in the water."

"Then why is Reba lying?"

"She is not really lying, she is just... mistaken. People make mistakes sometimes. She just does not know any better."

Now I know all these things, but back then it was heartbreaking. My friends would keep distance because of something I just knew not to be true. Reba never asked me directly before spreading the story, nor did any of the other kids. I wanted to scream my lungs out at her -I am not a dopehead!- but then screaming is not the most un-dopey thing there is. So instead of screaming, I talked to her the next time, to dispel her fears. Big mistake. She just took it as further confirmation that there was 'good stuff' in the water. How do you talk to people that do not want to hear? Anyhow, although we continued to be friends, she never visited chez moi.

That is how I became acquainted with The Gossip Monster. It bit me and hurt me, and there was nothing I could do but watch. But I would learn to tame it in years to come, oh yes I would. Gossip would never become an obedient pet, nor have I given to every one of Gossip's whim. But we have learned to respect each other.

I hope Reba is OK. It has been ages since I left Eram and we have not kept in touch. I hope she marries a dentist. ;)

Stay tuned. Q.

--
The funny bit is that this based on a real story. My dad's actual first diplo assignment IRL and my school friends would not come over because there was 'foreign water' at home. Go figure.
