AT11 announced

http://community.eveonline.com/news/dev-blogs/alliance-tournament-xi-announced/

The 11th Alliance Tournament will be kicking off on July 20, 2013. While we like to keep things nice and simple like that here in the Tournament Team, a few more announcements regarding this year's Alliance Tournament are in order because we are changing a few things.
Firstly, we will do away with the usual format of qualifying rounds and group stages and go for a double elimination bracket format from the start. This raises the stakes significantly for all participants as all matches will matter!

Secondly, Alliance Tournament XI will run over three weekends instead of four as has been the common practice.

Thirdly, we will be introducing bans into the Alliance Tournament from the second weekend onwards. Team captains will ban out two ship types each before the match starts so that neither team can field that specific ship type in the match. The effect of the bans will be the same as the New Eden Open, while the format will become a 1 - 2 - 1 type rather than the 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 that we saw in the NEO. With this added to the mix, matches will be more varied and exciting.

Lastly, to fly with an alliance in the Alliance Tournament XI you will need to have been a member of that alliance from downtime this morning, at 11:00 UTC May 15th. Each alliance may only field one team.

There will be future Dev Blogs in the coming weeks which cover the rules, broadcast schedule and sign up details, so stay tuned! For those who missed the previous ones - the matches from Alliance Tournaments IX and X are available on CCP's YouTube channel.

EVE TV's Player Commentator Team

We will once again be opening up the application process for players who would like to be PVP commentators. These elite players are handpicked by us to fly out to Iceland for the tournament finals played over the final two weekends, joining the team here at CCP HQ to help us run the live broadcasts.

As a commentator you'll be on the set discussing the tournament, tactics, teams and talking with developers about EVE live on air. You'll also take shifts in the commentary booth providing live commentary on the matches themselves. You need to know your PvP and you need to know how to keep on talking!

Alliance Tournament XI will take place over three consecutive weekends starting on Saturday, July 20 and ending with the grand finale on Sunday, August 4. Flights (from all Icelandair destinations) and accommodations are supplied by us. All you need is a little spending money.

So you're interested? The next step is to check this short list and make sure you match what we're looking for!

Can you come out and play? Selected players will need to hold a valid passport (we will require scans to confirm this at a later stage) and be available to fly to Iceland on Wednesday, July 24 and return home on Monday, August 5.

A sense of humor is a must: commentators will need to be sharp-witted, knowledgeable, presentable and comfortable with talking on camera and into a microphone. To increase your chances of getting through, we highly recommend submitting any pre-made or purpose filmed video you have of yourself (link to a YouTube clip!) as part of your application.

You need to know your PvP: We don't despise industrialists, mission-runners and miners but as this is a PvP tournament and you need to be well versed.

You must be 21+ in order to apply.

If you are interested in taking part, please email us at evetv@ccpgames.com by 23:59 UTC (Eve Time) on Sunday May 26, 2013 with the following information. Those lucky enough to be selected for the second round of eliminations must be available to attend voice chat interviews on Saturday, June 1, 2013. The chosen commentators will be announced by June 5, 2013.

Character and real name.

Date of birth.

Nationality and current country of residence.

Tell us about yourself, both in game and out. Remember what you're applying for and sell yourself to that effect.

Confirm you are available between the 24th of July to 5th of August to fly to Iceland. If you need to book time off work / school please don't do it until we accept you; but please check that it is possible, if there is any doubt here please let us know.

Remember your applying to be on TV! Include any multimedia you think shows you off, all of the people chosen for the last Tournament had sent in video clips/links to YouTube!

Applications close on May 26, so get mailing!
A final note: The Tournament from the perspective of a commentator is an amazing experience. You get to take part in a unique production, fly to Iceland, get a tour around the CCP office and chat to developers like almost no other players will ever get the chance to. But with great power comes great responsibility; planning and promotional shows take place during the weeks up to the final show and you may not be asked to fly to Iceland if you fail to take part or become unavailable during this time!

On behalf of the Tournament Team,

CCP Gargant

July's gonna be busy for me but I will be watching as much as possible, maybe even get a chance to participate.

I've heard that SCL4 is going to use the AT11 ruleset and be a "dry-run" for a lot of the more active in the tourney alliances, IE PL, Hydra, Outbreak, Rote, Verge, etc.

Effectively removing the ability to make 'all star' teams, and making it an actual alliance tournament. Yaaay.

Also, bets are on as to how long it takes HYDRA to get disqualified again

It is unlikely EM will be signing up, as we have other things to focus on right now, and no one to really lead a team. All our FCs are busy :P

Sign up, fill the holes later.  Being admitted will spur involvement!

It's something we've discussed briefly, but I'm not certain there's enough interest, or hope, on our part.  It also costs All The Money.

We have been trying to get into the alliance tournament for the last three years. We can't afford to sink tens of billions of ISK into the lottery, and the drawing is really just a matter of luck.

This is why there needs to be extensive and more open qualifying before the televised rounds.

Tiberius, you answer is rejected! SIGN UP FOR ALL THE THINGS NAO.

The only really expensive comitment is in implants. Those extra 5%'s for fitting and damage and tanking do add up.

The 'flagships' with officer mods are totally unnecessary and do get rolled all the time.

I believe so, but what starts adding up is replacing ships after matches and rigging all your people with as much implants as are feasible based on ship roles.  Some of them make a pretty big difference in what you can fit on you ships and change things up that extra tiny little bit.

Of course this makes no difference when you bring the wrong ships though :/

A lot of people on this forum have participated and I hope they chime in as well, but it was one of the most super fun and exciting and also terrifying EVE experiences for me, ever.

The whole fitting and ship-type meta game about what you will bring to the fight is just so much fun, running different ideas and testing them out to see how awesome or fail they are, etc. Looking at your opponents records and trying to figure out what they might be using.

The absolute nerves before the match, the awesomeness and high stakes of the fights, the space high fives when you win a match vs a tough opponent.

The utter embarrassment when for your final match you fail at math and show up with too many points for you team and you are obliterated in about 1 minute.  I still get trolled about this from alliance mates, deservedly.

As one would expect Rote has an entire sub-culture around the AT's, the teams, the team captains, co-capts. The most surprising is the level of buy-in from alliance mates. In the form of billions of isk donated. We do have some richfags, but honestly it's a grass roots movement for most of our funding every year.

That being said, AT's are nothing if not expensive. Rote made it to the round of 32 last time, before getting knocked out by the eventual winners (VoC) and it cost us just under 8 bil isk if I remember the spreadsheet correctly.

With the resurgence of t1 ships there are plenty of reasonable setups that can be fielded on the "cheap," while still being effective. Honestly, implants of the +5%'s variety are the biggest isk sink. I'd anticipate most alliances spending between 5-10 bil isk for this years tourney, with outliers and experts like HYDRA, PL, Us and exodus, VoC and a few others going for more expensive buy in's between 10-20 bil isk. PL probably more than 20 to be honest. The further you get, the more expensive it gets. Just hope you don't end up with a bunch of good teams in your initial bracket section or worse, a bunch of bullies in the losers bracket. Smart money says Hydra will lose it's first round in order to go to the statistically easier losers bracket.

With tiericide and the new Navy BC's t1/Faction based ship setups are going to be a lot more common, but if you plan on being successful, you really do need quite a lot of buy-in from your alliance. Not only will you need a solid core of well skilled pilots capable of flying needed ship types well, you will also need a decently skilled "b" team that can show up to practices on sisi.

Other concerns include operational security for your practices, logistic pre-match, setup management, theory crafting, etc etc.

Not a small concern to say the least. But if you have or can get a dedicated captain, and a good support staff, you just might, just might, have a magical moment like "10 thoraxes" or last year's PL v Rote Match (ultra expensive).

Even without "huge" matches like those, each match will live on in the history of both the AT and your alliance as something alternatively fondly and hatefully remembered.

To put that comment into perspective, in at8 rote lost to Hydra, I piloted a Bhaalgorn in that match, I think it was our flagship, anyways, I refought that battle on and off for the next 8 months and still wonder, "gee if we had done X instead of Y...." Maybe things would have been different.

There are several risk with going into the AT. First, if you expect to do very well, you could end up getting a sudden surge in "interest-generated" recruiting, while not 'bad' it can be easier for spy's to trickle in, like they aren't there already.

Worse, if you do poorly, you can stand to lose a lot of respect. While not SUPER important, that might deny you recruits and cause your alliance to suffer for a few weeks after the AT. Or you could do a "meh" job and slide back into obscurity.

All in all, AT's rock and should always be attempted. Always stick around for the "bidding" part of the AT slots, last year some guys got in for just the asking price of one plex.
