Dev Blog: Introducing the EVE Timeline

Ten years of political intrigue, heroic piloting, great wars, friendships, betrayals and various other shenanigans make for some of the most compelling stories and events in gaming (or so we are frequently told).

As EVE Online approaches its 10th birthday we’ve started to find ourselves a bit lacking for tools to explain the incredible depth and story it has to offer - especially as it just...keeps...growing. So far we’ve had to point people to articles on the EVE wiki, to chronicles, our published novels, scientific articles and even ancient forum posts to pull everything together and give them a crash course in the setting of EVE. Certainly with the imminent launch of DUST 514, set in the same universe, this challenge is only going to increase in complexity.  I’m sure you’d agree with us it could be better.

And indeed it can!

As of right now, we’ve launched the first version of an interactive timeline that explains the setting and lore of EVE Online and DUST 514. To begin with we’re sticking with core concepts: how the New Eden universe is discovered and colonized, how the collapse of the EVE Gate isolates the pioneers and how they eventually become the major empires and controlling forces in this dark and unforgiving universe. In coming months we will expand on the functionality of this timeline to include excerpts from the True Stories initiative as well as other accounts of significant player events. But for this first iteration, we’re focused on the setting and lore of EVE.

If you’ve clicked the link already you’ll notice the timeline is hosted on a new domain, EVE.com. In the run-up to the 10th anniversary of EVE Online on May 6th and with DUST 514 taking an active and deadly place in the EVE universe, it feels like the perfect time to open this portal of all things EVE related.

Once you’ve had a chance to click around the timeline, we’d love to know what other world-shaping moments you’d like to see canonized there. The formation of the first alliance? The birth and destruction of the first titan? The invasion and “burning” of Jita? Please let us know what moments we’re forgetting in the comments thread attached to this blog.

So much has happened in the past years it’s impossible for a single entity to remember it all; only the collective hivemind of you who were truly there can tackle the huge task of chronicling our shared history.

Pretty timeline is pretty. :D

1) The number of capsuleer women who are bisexual is greater than the number who are lesbian.
2) Most of the former group appear lesbian due to a lack of suitable male partners to go around.
3) The lack of suitable male partners can be summed up in most cases thusly: interested, worth the air they breathe, available; pick two.

Very pretty.

Little jarring to see the jump between the Drone Regions and the rise of Heth/return of Jamyl, though.

No Brothers of Freedom incident, no Caldari Prime Riots, no Malkalen...

Heck, no Reschard V Disaster for that matter.

Hmm.  It's more an interesting exercise in what was being considered the "top level highlights". :)

I like it.

Also helps put things into clearer perspective.  Running the numbers, my oldest character was born 168 years after the start of the Caldari-Gallente War.  That means it's likely her ancestors ranging from her great-grandparents back several generations were involved in hostilities.

From a real life perspective, the Caldari-Gallente War is in many ways like World War I.  Far enough removed that it seems like solid history, yet closer than we think in terms of its impacts on the world and cultures that inhabit it.

Hmm.  Just pondering after a long day of number-crunching.

I like it a lot, it has a great working base. I hope the project develops and starts adding the more detailed events like those in the Empyrean Age novel (with the links to their videos), those of AURORA that were public and important (like the Tetrimon arc) and even those important player moments like the first TITAN destroyed. It really is a good start, and I see a lot of potential in this project!

Important moment, hah, yeah. the Frontier War (or ASCNvsBOB war, or Pendulum war, or whatever you want to call it) could be added in detail to explain the beginning of the end to the 'first generation' of major null-powers. Soon after this there were only a few major power-blocks in null as opposed to singular alliances owning whole regions or multiple ones for themselves. (Gods I miss that time, so very very much.) But really if we are to add the bit about the first titan lost by itself, it will read "BoB shot at the first titan when it went offline, forcing it to remain while offline so that they could bring in a huge dread fleet and kill it. The end."

Hardly worth mentioning on it's own, better off describing the war itself and including that the titan was killed. This list of events will be so much thicker once the extensive history of null-warfare and events will be filled in. I really want a highly detailed entry on the Great Northern War, myself.

Looks okay, but it really needs some sort of zoom in feature for the present era (unless I competely derped and missed it), because its crowded there now, so think how bad it will be when everything else gets added in.

Ah, confirmed derp then, sorry.

In that case, does look very nice.  And it would be nice if you could have options to add player events intot he timeline and other could enable them, and not jsut for the big null sec alliances.  For instance, someone could add in the PIE vs EM war highlights, and others could then searcht he timeline for EM and it would show up.

And I seem to be very chatty today.

I think (I hope!) more player-created events will be added. The Great Northern War and the first Titan kill, for instance.

Amusing ShinTrivia: I was in Reikoku when the Titan kill went down. I missed the jump bridge (I had to switch to a gank battleship) by something like 20 seconds. I still wish I would have just taken my Ares across and gotten a few rounds of barrage (it was a weird Ares) into that thing.
