I've done a lot of searching here and on different forums and even on google itself, but I can't seem to find where this may have been discussed before.  If it has, then just link me and scold me for not searching hard enough.  I will then hang my head in shame and read the linked article(s).

I would like to know how attainable the "rehabilitation" techniques used in the book Templar One to the general population is.  That is to say: can your average psychiatrist use the same technology to enter a patient's mind and see what's going on in there as well as utilize world programming to help mend whatever is hindering them.  Would this technology be used in capsuleer training, whether it is accessible to the average citizen or not?

I'd say its very likely possible, just not widespread. Would your average baseliner be able to afford that? Probably not, but the average capsuleer likely could.

On a cynical note, there's a lot of capsuleers out there who could obviously benefit from talking to a "normal" therapist, or even just someone who isn't trying to fuck them, kill them, or rip them off.

I would say almost anything is available to the Capsuleer population. However, this is not really a psychiatry thing, what you're talking about.

As far as I can understand, it is used in prisons because it is a method of rehabilitating people who would otherwise be too dangerous or violent to talk to in their real waking state. So they sedate the prisoners and talk to them in a safe virtual environment that can be controlled.

Not sure what you intend to do with this tech, but it's already been used once before by some other roleplayer recently, and nobody really got up in arms about 'urdoinitrong' for using it... so I suppose it;s plenty available.

Just remember your sources for where you got the tech IC: The Amarr.

The Amarr are the ones who use it, and as far as PF goes, are the only ones confirmed to use it. I would suggest you cite the Amarrians IC as where you got the tech.

Having been through plenty of therapy I just want to add a thought because I think this subject is interesting.

Psychiatry and psychology are both processes, like science. It took me 14-15 years to diagnose the core problem I was having; the rest of the time had been treatment of immediate symptoms. However, they're also soft sciences. Unlike a diagnostician in internal medicine, they must make an empathetic connection to the patient.

Through the use of advanced technology probably not unrelated to technology in neural scans for clones, the science has probably progressed in a far more evidence-based direction toward hard science. You can assume that advanced CT-like technologies have closed the gap between neurology and psychiatry considerably. That does still demand the role of the psychologist as mirror through which the patient can observe him/herself. But medicine has likely advanced quite significantly for those who can afford it (capsuleers easily can). Whether or not Freudian or Lacanian thinking on the subject of psychoanalysis has been validated is up for discussion.

The real rub in any psychiatric care though is the determination of the patient to make strides. I'm sure that with the power that overrides ethical responsibility, many capsuleers would disregard psychiatric care as entirely unnecessary or even laughable.

Thanks for all the feedback, guys!  What I was trying to ask was not if it was available to individual capsuleers after they are already going about and doing things, but was it possibly available during the training process.

One would think that, in a training process as difficult and psychologically stressed as capsuleer training, the people who run the training programs might actually use a similar technology as used in rehabilitation in Amarrian prisons to diagnose potential problems and to go about fixing them.

I'm not saying there's something wrong with Saleha... but I just wanted some feedback on the topic before I delved deeper into her past and training.  Again, thanks for the comments.

I'll add another +1 to this.

I've seen a few characters like this but never anyone trying to make a business out of it. Someone who was good at it - and very patient - could make a bunch of ISK with something like this.

Lagging Behind

Morwen's Law:
1) The number of capsuleer women who are bisexual is greater than the number who are lesbian.
2) Most of the former group appear lesbian due to a lack of suitable male partners to go around.
3) The lack of suitable male partners can be summed up in most cases thusly: interested, worth the air they breathe, available; pick two.

I've been thinking it over and I do think the general idea has potential, and it might be one of the directions I take Iwan in. I wouldn't want to muscle in on any ideas Miyamun might have just as a result of this discussion, though.

LoL No one's muscling in.  It just appears as if the consensus is that capsuleer training facilities wouldn't bother going high tech and would just hire a few psychologists to help the trainees cope.  At least, that's what I'm getting from all those +1's. ;)

Just seems to me that neuroscience would have developed to the point of being able to pinpoint exactly what's going "wrong" in a person's mind, at least this far into the future.  Also, that the technology to do so would be somewhat related to the aforementioned rehabilitation technology.

I'll have to ponder exactly how to go about the next installment in Saleha's flashbacks using this information. :)  Not that there's anything wrong with her, per se.

The 'free' capsuleers might be the control group of all the capsuleers that have been brainwashed, therapied to sanity and extra indoctrinated.

Mostly, I think the +1s are people agreeing that the collection of capsuleer characters we've got is a pretty messed-up bunch.

It seems logical to me that therapeutic science would be quite a bit more advanced than what we've got now. I could definitely see the upper segments of society, capsuleer trainees included, make heavy use of that sort of technology. Also, one way to insulate this from potential naysayers or PF changes is to make it local; a subtle distinction like calling it something like "a program I participated in back in university" rather than explicitly stating the size and extent of the practice can make all the difference.

This does leave something of an explanatory gap; why are there so many seriously messed-up capsuleers, if they can be (relatively) easily "fixed" by the power of SCIENCE!.

Trust issues and the classical massive hubris, is my guess.
