Don't forget that one cannot, in public, agree with someone shitting on their employer.  Even if they partially agree.

Food for thought.

Quoted for truth. Also, an employee whose job entails public relations (any employee who has regular contact with the public in an "official" capacity) is more restricted this way, even, than most.

Aye. I'm sure many of us have been in the professional position of having to defend or at least try and stay neutral about our employer or their work/product while secretly wanting to shout from the hills every dirty secret and thing that is wrong.

People do what they can though :)

I tend to go onto FHC and post anecdotes about the increasingly-bizarre comments of my boss when work annoys me.

ie "So Australia - were they on our side during the war?"

I'm quite jealous. Anonymity is a thing of the past for me, and as a consequence I hardly post anything anywhere any more. :(

on the IGS right now, the oldest topic on the Front Page is 12 days old.
The newest topic is 16 Hours old.
There are only 8 threads with responses from less than 2 days ago.

it is very quiet.

And the quality of those threads is questionable to begin with. :O

Sadly. I don't really have any topics to start, unfortunately.

I could, but I suspect it would be wise...

I guess mudslinging gets boring after a while. The IGS has too much of it, imo.

Not that I'm against conflict. I just prefer hot guns instead of rambling mouths.

Not having an account that's active and the free time that comes with being ill has given me a chance to look at this situation from an angle I hadn't before.

The IGS seems to be the gauge of EVE RP for people who aren't familiar with it or the game, given that it's the "readily accessible" venue; channels need accounts and the knowledge of their existence. The gauge is reading a pretty resolute "boring as fuck". There's a lot of repeating the same things over again (be that the same arguments or what amounts to the same posts in the same threads), a lot of posting that consists of snipes and little more, too many attempts at being witty / badass that just make people seem slightly unhinged to count... it's not a good impression it makes, really. :\

Hopefully the in-game situation is better, at least.

My base line for dealing with any of the Eve-Online forums is to not post unless I've got a good reason. It was drummed into me in my first few corps that you do not post on the forums. That's been a default that I've had difficulty getting away from. I kind of see IGS as like http://scoop.co.nz - a good place for press-releases, but not really the place you discuss your private life unguardedly.

That all said, has anything changed? Was it ever more interesting? Less unhinged?

My base line for dealing with any of the Eve-Online forums is to not post unless I've got a good reason.

^This.

It was my modus operandi for BloodBird and Jesmine when I played actively; don't say anything in public unless it's a legitimate comment and/or important to the topic at hand. Also, keep your private life private (out of the super-public sphere that is the IGS, unless it can't be helped) and make treads only when you have a good purpose for it. That is, when your toon needs to communicate something to the public that isn't best done by mail.

It also helped that both those toons were relatively polite and tended to look down on those that simply run their mouths and/or can't be rational and somewhat respectful even to their enemies. Hatred and conviction to fight and kill is well and good, (to the point where it gets good fights and more conflicts \o/ ) but the average foaming-mouth rager who can't stop being mad at [insert favorite target] got old and boring really, really fast.

While it's only my opinion, the most interesting and engaging toons I RP'ed with where those who managed a balance between personal and public opinions, beliefs and causes, and a modicum of healthy civil and... level-headed conduct. It's not good to play, say, an Amarrian hardliner while trying to remain bestfriendsforever with you enemies, but again, the opposite of being super-hostile and near programmed-for-eternal-hate-and-anger vs X wasn't very interesting either.

In short, it's complicated, and maintaining interesting and believable characters can become a challenge. Especially as everyone's definition of "interesting and believable" is different.

And add to this the general drop in RP'ers in recent years and the PF changes (or lack of them) and we got today's sad state of affairs. I'm honestly not entirely sure what can be done to try and remedy this situation.

I've heard mysterious tales of a time early, early on in EVE's life when the IGS didn't represent abject horror, but that's about it. Taken alongside the decreased activity, though, it's proportionally harder to see the good stuff in amidst the insanity: rather than coming across as a group that's fairly active and obeys Sturgeon's law to the letter, it just comes across as a group with occasional and very questionable spasmodic efforts.

When I first started playing EVE, the IGS turned me off to RP horribly. It was like, everything bad that can possibly exist in RP, all in one place. The only good that came of it was that it was the first place I saw any reference to the Sansha invasions, which were just getting going about the same time I started playing. From there, I found channels like the Summit and SYNE and met people, and suddenly RP was awesome. But yeah, IGS is often everything horrible about RP, all in one place.
