Nah, its purely for legal reasons.

Which one of the clones is the 'real' one, who owns everything.
Who inherits things.
Who has to take care of the alimony for the kids.
Who has to go to the armed services because of conscription.
Which one has to go to jail.
Which one pays the taxes.

All that jazz.

So the easiest thing to do is to ban them.

Theres also the issue of the psychological impact of the effect on the identity of the cloned person.  That counts for something.

And heres the really interesting part.  Would the typical capsuleer even want another version of him or her running around?  Someone just as ruthless, who knows legally only one can own their vast wealth, and who knows every secret and strategy that capsuleer uses?  There is no enemy more insidious than oneself.

There is also no agent/employee/business partner more competent. Few others can understand one's vision as well, and have as vested a stake in its execution.  Such a relationship could work beautifully ("nobody understands me but J00!"), if adequate safeguards are in place -- but the bitch of it is figuring out what are 'adequate' safeguards, eh? ;)

Very much enjoying the contrasting outlooks here. ;)

necro lol.

But also, I read a thing a while back, which is sort-of related to this.

It said that, when asked the question:
"If there was an absolutely identical clone of yourself, would you fight with, or have sex with, them?"

Men tended to choose "Fight With", whereas women tended to choose "have sex with".

just thought that it is interesting how Gottii and Vieve have different outlooks, that fit with the silly thing I read, though not to the same extreme. Gottii says "compete with", Vieve says "collaborate with"

Weird huh? :)

The correct answer to that question is "Why 'or?'," by the way.

I might be wildly off-target, but I do believe that the reason for the ban of multiple clones does have something to do with people meeting themselves being bad for the psyche. Might be thinking the wrong setting or something, though.

In the Jean Claude van Dam movie, "Time Cop", if you meet and touch the past version of yourself, both versions of you die horibly by turning to goo.

I would like to think the same thing happens in Eve :)

Yesssss.

But in that particular film you have an ultra-secret organisation who are tasked to prevent changes to the timestream. Who wear clearly marked uniforms whilst in the past and who carry clearly marked "Time Police" badges.

 :s

Of course I gather you where being ironic. But that stuff makes about as much sense as the current state of PF.

The philosophy of cloning thread. Seems to be covering a lot of similar topics. I personally would love to have a dozen Istvaans instead of just one.

The philosophy of cloning thread. Seems to be covering a lot of similar topics. I personally would love to have a dozen Istvaans instead of just one.

Istvaan attempts to infiltrate a corporation. The director of internal security appears to be the best Istvaan has ever encountered. Who is this individual ? They know the sorts of things Istvaan would attempt, and have surprisingly effective countermeasures in place...

Meanwhile, Istvaan is intrigued at the skilfulness of the latest person to attempt infiltration of his corporation. They are surprisingly competent. Who is this individual ? They know all the tricks and stratagems...

Some Time Later...
Security Director > At last we meet.
Infiltrator > Quite so. It has been quite the interesting game.
Security Director > And now, the endgame.
Infiltrator > Indeed.
Security Director > So, Mr. Shogaatsu, where do we go from here?
Infiltrator > I... what ? How did you know it was me ?
Security Director > Because I'm Istvaan as well. We've been set up. By ourselves.
Soon, the only way to protect yourself from the predations of the Istvaans... is to become one of the Istvaans yourself.

*snickers*  This was what Celeste was complaining about in https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=112988&find=unread.

Not that it was "complaining", per se.  Merely an observation.

That's what I love about it. It's so sick. The technology permits a degree of perversion and twistedness never before seen.

I imagine Eve celebrities are quite fastidious about maintaining their genetic code to themselves, lest obsessive fans capture a stray skin cell and go to work. Imagine being able to vat-grow a sex slave copy of Britney Spears to keep in your basement. Or growing yourself 10 new wangs! Anything is possible in the world of unethical cloning practices! Even ten - no, eleven - Britney Spears sex clones for all your wangs!

I once toyed about with what the seedier and more illicit corners of the Federation might get up to, with their knack for the bio-engineering side of things.

Aside from the ability to indulge fetishes as yet undiscovered to man on a whole new level, there was the whole supercharged plastic surgery to consider. Britney Spears clones are so expensive. Get a few good pictures, the finest surgical equipment the black markets can offer, and some people who don't mind being rearranged to suspiciously resemble Britney and a hundred other celebrities.

Oh man, something just hit me.  No wonder the slave traders of the Amarrian Empire, no matter how irreligious and immoral, give lip service to the concept of the soul and salvation.

If no one believed it, if a clone was the same as a person, all the sudden their entire industry is taken from them.  Cloning a workforce is vastly more efficient and predictable than raising one.  And leaves the industry open to just about anyone.  So, Holders are going to preach about the soul as much as they can, regardless of belief, because it keeps their monopoly intact.

And, outside of the Empire, someone who starts to crank out various service clones might just get a call from Angel hitmen, for much the same reason.
